Does anyone out there have an HEL oil cooler fitted to their 14? We've recently returned from a trip through France and Germany during a very (for us) hot spell and when we got home I noticed that oil had been leaking from the unions below the cooler and there was very little oil showing in the sight glass.
I've topped it up and used it a couple of times since and it hasn't leaked or used any oil. Any ideas would be welcomed as I don't understand why it can leak and then not leak! (It didn't use any oil or leak before we went away either)
Can't help personally, but separately I would pose the question to HEL themselves, it may be something they have come across before - if not they are very helpful chaps in helping you find a solution. Just a thought..
Cheers Barmy, I'll give them a ring :onya:

Just as an addendum to my cooler problem I did ring HEL and the only possible solution they could come up with was the air temperature caused some slight expansion in the aluminium which allowed oil to escape. We've just returned home from two weeks travelling through France, Germany and then back through France where they were experiencing a heatwave - and it was bloody hot - 40+ degrees at times. And we were knocked off at one point, whilst stationary, by a car which hit us from behind, although I can understand that a GSX 1400 two up with top box and panniers at mid-day is hard to see.
I know Oz gets hot, is this likely to be a viable reason :confused1:
IMO the few degrees your oil got hotter shouldn't have done that. Being knocked off is more likely to have caused it. Weird that the leak is gone though.
I'd keep an eye on it and if it leaks again check the fittings for a hairline fracture, incorrect assembly/installation.
Reading this I'd say it has more to do with being knocked off than the heat - or possibly a combination of both. Nip them up & see how it goes.
