Hi All
A rather interesting thing became apparent today..
The steel started to show before I had a bald tyre.. (At 5300 miles)
I took my bike to where I had the tyres fitted and the salesman said "Ooh I can see your point.. The steel is showing before the wear indicators have worn.....I guess you should have had the Angel GT's instead of the Angel ST's"
To which I responded "I asked for GT's but you lot ordered the ST's by mistake"
He said he doubted I would get any joy by sending the tyres back to Pirelli..
So on Wednesday (assuming I get there alive) I am going to try the Michelin Road 5's that seem to be getting rave reviews..
The previous Michelin Pilot Road 4's I had on Sophie lasted 7500 miles and didnt show steel !!
I have to confess its put me off the Angels !
@Speedy1959 . I would contact Pirelli anyway just to make sure that it's not a tyre defect. They might request for them back and you never know you might get a free pair of boots out of them?.
]it could well be a limited defect so I'd ask pirelli
Failing that I'll be keen to hear a comparison berteen the two tyres.
Irish's tyres have the opposite problem, all the rubber comes off at the edges leaving the centre almost untouched. :confused1:
To be fair though, I can see a wear indicator in the pic, not far off from centre line, but the centre has just worn down. Looks like lots of 'highway' miles as the majority of wear is dead centre.
Chop61 had a tyre do this on his outback travels a week or so ago, was a Mitchy from memory, he rode it over 100 miles, 2 up & fully loaded, like that to get to the next tyre shop. It lasted till then, so you should be fine making it to Wednesday.
What sort of pressure are you running in it?
5300 miles isn't good even for an st
I used to get around 7000 out of a back and that was loads of motorway miles .
I got better around 9000 miles out the gt's simular roads as simular trips .
I'm still on my first set of gt's
I'll be very interested in how you get on with the michelin's as folk say they are very good tyres .
I like the Road 5. Inspire a lot of confidence from the beginning. Will see how they hold up in the long run.

What sort of pressure are you running in it?
40 psi in the rear
I run 40 - 42 in mine as well.
Lean it over more!
I did that on a long ride and got the nickname 'Shread'
Sunday night after a weekend away, last fuel stop at Singleton & 240km from home along the Putty Rd and the back tyre has steel showing on the OEM Bridgestone 023. We were a large group so I told the others not to wait because I wouldn't be going over 100 & my mate would follow in case of trouble.
Apparently the steel bands throws some brilliant sparks at night and I also learned that the Bridgy has a second steel band with rubber in between. When I cut the tyre open there was still 3mm of rubber left so I wouldn't be concerned Speedy.
A few years ago my Triumph Tiger Sport wore it's Angel ST's the same as that, wire showing way too soon. Quite a few lads on the Tiger forum had the same problem and the triumph dealers all just said we were using the wrong pressure (even though we all ran factory settings).
Well after a chat with a fairly local bike shop who stocks a MASSIVE range of tyres on the shelf I have decided to go with. . . . .
Pirelli Angel GT2
Why?
Cos I loved how the Angel ST's made the bike feel.
But mainly because they have a very good deal on the GT2's till the end of the month.
"Ride in Ride out" fitted and balanced for £232
In my neck of the woods that's a very good price fitted.
Hopefully these won't display "steelbeltitus"!
S.
Speedy, about average for ST. I dont like talking tyres much. My rear GT just clicked over 24 thou. ks. Front went at 19. Have said before, bike shop mate telling me a customer, 1200 BMW, will get over 40 from Michelin 5. My rear tyre just amazes me, PR3 Mich lasted 13 th ks.
£232 is better than I paid £245 for fitting to lose wheels so that's a great price for a ride in fitting xx
I think you will enjoy going from their 3rd tier to their 1st tier tyre.

How cute he's blowing you kisses too... :stir:
I'm running an Angel ST front & GT rear, works great & handles much nicer than it did on PR3s or PR4 GTs. Looks like I'll get 6-7k from the rear too, which is better than the 5k I was getting from PR4 GTs.
@grog How the hell do you get 24000kms out of a rear tyre.???
I think I'm doing well if I get 6000 miles out of mine. I thrash it hard on motorway and dual carriageway all the time commuting.
Tyre by the way is a Metzeler Roadtech Z6. I did try a Maxxis, but destroyed it in 1800 miles and it tried to kill me several times when it spun up under hard acceleration..
Makes my arse twitch when the rear end tries to overtake me :imrgreen:
@froudy Grog leaves a lot earlier than you when travelling to work.

:rofl2: :rofl3:
It blows me away too. I'm getting 9000 kms rear & 10,000 kms front. Its the edge's that are worn out first for me, as i don't commute & am trying to stay clear of major/straight roads when riding etc.
I feel like a freak in a circus. No idea why rear tyre keeps lasting. Just doesnt seem to wear out. Im no thrasher but not slow either. As said, front was stuffed at 19k, i usually replace as a pair, this time didnt. Doesnt slip, slide or do anything wrong. Got me stuffed.
It's a good problem to have Grog :onya:
You're being too kind Sweaty :stir: :stir: :stir:
Kind appreciated, us old blokes need all the love we can get.
