Title: Ulle's garage
Post by: Ulle on Tuesday, 09 July 2019, 01:41 PM
Hi folks! This is my first post to this great forum. First I want to thank you all; I have had so much great information from this forum! Nice!  :onya:

I was not planning to buy GSX1400 but when this beauty came to my way I could not resist.. It is spring/summer here in Finland and like every year the prices are just ridiculous. When the leafs are starting to fall from the trees same happens to prices. Thats why I was planning to buy a new motorcycle later this year.. But then I found this;

GSX1400 K4 from the first owner, just 26tkm driven, Micron mufflers, steel braded brake and clutch lines, Wilbers rear shocks, Wilbers progressive springs in front and all original parts came with the bike. I also think that the blue/white is the best colour for the GSX1400, but I can live with this red/black K4 also. In fact what I have researched it seems that this K4 red/black seems to be not so popular. I have found more K5 red/black than this K4. If you have similar please comment/put picture below!

And yes, this post is nothig without pictures. Here she is after a good wash, polishing and waxing, enjoy!

After taking the pictures I have changed all the fluids and air filter, cleaned front and rear brakes, check the TPS, blocked the PAIRS, adjusted front shock to factory defaults etc..

Yesterday I took bike to workshop for the valve clearance check and throttle body synchronization. I also asked them to make the compression test, just to make sure everything is OK.

Chain and sprockets needs to be changed and also new tires.

Bike is in great condition. In fact I feel like I will have to keep it as stock as possible, in my warm garage, under the blanket..

I just said to my wife that because of this bike good condition I will need another bike to build and tune. She did not agree..

We will see how it goes!

Firstly, welcome to the forum Ulle. Second and most important is to find another wife who is agreeable.  ;)

Now to why the K4 R/B isn't as popular as the K5. It's the over kill of black paint Ulle. :onya:

Welcome Ulle, I saw you changed the springs to factory settings but it's best to set them to the settings Wilbers gave with the springs/shocks since the oil is sometimes thicker and can give very different outcomes with the stock settings.

I got bike back to home. Valve clearances were spot on, no need to adjust. Synchronization was not OK and after adjustment bike feels better. BUT there was couple of broblems;

When they were trying to start the bike the battery was dead. It has under week old battery and it was fully charged when I took the bike to the shop. I measured voltage today and it was charging 14-14,2V @2500-3000rpm. With higher rpms not over 14,8V so I think everything is OK there and maybe they just forgot ignition on, or turned key to "parking" for whole night. I will follow voltage couple of days if there is something wrong.

I also bought new spark plugs (CR8EK) and when they put them on she was not behaving. She was "spitting" with new plugs so they needed to put old spark plugs back. They were in good condition so no worries there but it feels strange why the bike did not work with new plugs? I think that she spits with old spark plugs too. Not much but you clearly notice that when you keep revs high, 3000-5000rpm in neutral. It was clearly noticeable when I was measuring voltage today. So there is another thing that needs to be solved. Maybe it's electrical thing or something to do with fuel system. But hey, she is 15 years old and ladies in that age can have temperament. :) Or maybe she just needs power commander or stock mufflers back.

Yes, I will have to focus more to front end adjustments but first I have to get her run smoothly.

Hi Ulle

Welcome to the forum, and a lovely bike you have!

You may or may not be aware that the front mudguard is fitted back to front, yes really it is possible to do on the 1400

Cheers

Hi,

Small updates:
-I found almost new second hand PCV and it has been installed. Bike behaves much more better now.  :onya:

-With battery and chargin everything works fine.
-Still looking for right adjustements to the front shocks. Need more driving. :)

Yeah I know the front mudguard is fitted wrong way. I was gonna flip it right way but it seems that you need to take the front wheel off for that. So maybe I just wait until the front tyre needs to be changed... Now the mudguard works better to keep my headers nice clean and shiny...  :8:

Hi Ulle

When I originally bought my bike I wasnt even looking for another bike!!
From time to time I visit my local dealership in Fleetwood for a coffee and a chat (as you do).
I was sat there drinking my coffee when a mechanic wheeled out Sophie (bike).. I said "Bloody hell thats in nice condition"..
He said "yes its just come in as a trade in"
I said "Can I take it for a quick spin"?
about 500 meters later I thought *!!*ing hell..... I knew I had to have her .. The rest is history..

Sophie (My bike) wanted me to put her photo up for you..
Since I got my bike back I have done a fair bit of experimenting with front/rear fork/shock settings..
Originally I set them up and recommended by the MCN article (which can be found on this forum)..
That was WAY too hard and bloody uncomfortable on the crappy roads which are common in the UK!
A shock absorber wont work if it cannot compress (If the pre load is too hard)..
Now I have softened things a lot and she is far better...
I have Hagon progressive springs in the front and uprated oil in the forks..(Hagon told me their springs are 20% stiffer than standard springs!!
My settings are:
Front :
Hagon Progressive springs
Oil: Rock Oil 7.5W
Pre load - 4 rings showing
Compression - 10 clicks out
Rebound - 8 clicks out

Rear:
Pre load - 3 rings showing
Compression - 2
Rebound - 2

For me these settings work much better, after all, its not a sports bike!!

I know people go on about the Blue/white GSX 1400's colours..
But it was the Black/Red that sold her to me.. You see far fewer around in the UK
My bike had 25,000 miles on when I bought her..
Shes now just turned over 40,000 miles and is loosening up nicely..
I have done several mods which are very worthwhile..
4 Pot calipers..
Standard silencers but modified (Nicer sound and better mid range breathing)(Photo)
You have a great bike there..
Enjoy it..

S.

Nice looking bike you have there Speedy! Your front shock adjustments are almoust the same as mine in the moment.

Couple of days ago I changed new sparkplugs and this time they were not broken. I was "forced" to buy NGK iridiums because it seems that you cant get Denso plugs anywhere from Finland... And I really did not want to buy original plugs from NGK anymore because it seems that I am not the only one who has had issues with new NGK plugs.

Same time I took the fuel pump from the tank and did clean the "teepack" and hi-pressure filter. Nothing much there but now I know it's been cleaned atleast once. :)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! We took logner ride with my friends (about 1,5h+1,5h) and it is clear that my ass doesnt like the stock seat! I did find the Toppsellerie seats from the "interwebs" but is there something you can do to the original seat to make it better?

I had my stock seat made harder and it makes a big difference.

I have a lowered Toppsellerie with gel pads and my arse is sore after 140 miles  :bugga:

Purchase a Gel insert & take the seat to a local upholster, have them remodel the foam so you're not sliding into the tank & fit the  Gel insert - thicker the better. This takes away the pressure points (supposedly) making it softer on yer ass.

Cheers mates!
It seems that toppsellerie may not be the way to happines.
I will check what can I do to the original seat. I think I know a guy whos father is a upholsterer so it's time for a phonecall..
