Title: Throttle cables
Post by: Speedy1959 on Thursday, 04 July 2019, 02:50 PM
I know I may be getting a case of OCD.. BUT,
Do throttle cables snap?
Externally the metal bits on mine are rusty..
I was wondering if its good policy to replace them ?
My bike has done 39,000 miles but is 14 years old..
I suppose I am thinking more preventative maintenance..
Obviously if I was to change i would buy new even though they are around £65

Your thoughts ?

S.

Well I guess they always CAN snap - but I think in all the years I've been around 14's on on the 14 forums, I've only heard of one case Simon.

But if they are rusty, for the sake ok OCD you might want to change them.

If you are thinking preventative maintenance though, it goes a lot further than that. Assuming you've already swapped the brake and clutch lines for braided, then there are the fuel lines (Suzuki recommend changing those every 3 years), caliper seals, master cylinder seals, slave cylinder seals - all of which could be starting to go.

To put into context, I repainted the calipers on my mates 2003 bandit a couple of days back. When we took them off they were all working fine - however closer inspection of the dust seals showed that they had started to harden and crack.

So it may just be worth thinking in a wider (and more expensive!) context about possible renewals. I know you've replaced your front calipers - but might the rear need an overhaul with new seals perhaps? When did you last replace the fuel lines? Etc!

Food for thought maybe.

When I first put my finger on one of the throttle cables by the TB I felt a little poke. One of the wires had been worn through. The cable was running against the adjuster's edge. I reinstalled so that the cable runs in the center of the adjuster! Check after 2k shows no further wear. I now have a spare throttle cable which gets installed when the next opportunity arises.

Throttle cables can break, my MZ had a dip in the cable run that filled with water and over the years it rusted through and snapped.  I replaced it with one I made as I could not get the proper one from the supplier.

Mine snapped at around 100k, it'd worn where they bend downwards towards the throttle bodies.
