Title: Shoei NXR lid...
Post by: Basil Brush on Thursday, 27 June 2019, 01:20 AM
Any members got this lid?

I listened to a 'mate' who swore by Arai lids. Although didn't have the said Arai lid. Turned out to be the biggest pile of shite ever. When at NEC even Arai said it's wrong lid for a naked bike.

I went back to AGV K5. Great lid. I just fancy something to run alongside. I quite fancy Shoei NXR Philosopher in (yes you've guessed) blue and white to match both my Suzuki's.

Could I please canvass opinions good or bad? This is the only forum I'm a member of.

Many thanks in advance.

I had Arai helmets up to the chaser then they changed something with the shells .the newer ones didn't fit me anymore.
I've have a Shoei nxr for the last 4 years and I love it .
Fits great and is so much quieter than the Arai's I had ever were .
I'll be buying the same again next time .
Emma also has a Shoei nxr and she loves hers too.

I have several arias over the years from top of the range to lower end, they fit my noggin nicely but all required ear plugs, never tried shoei so can't comment really.

My wife has an NXR, had it nearly 5 years and she would not have anything else, she had it custom fitted and the fit is perfect.  She tells me it's quiet when the vents are shut but there is a whistle when the top vents are open.

Rather than go for a specific lid, I'd go try a few different ones at somewhere like Helmet City to see which fitted me best and then decide. To me fit is the most important factor in buying a lid, followed by the noise factor, followed by style.

Helmet City - if you have one near to you Brian - are approved Shoei fitment specialists so when buying new can alter the interior elements of any Shoei lid to ensure you get the best fit for your head. They adjusted both mine and my wife's lid interiors and we both have perfect fitting lids now.

So if you are set on the Shoei I'd have a word with Helmet City, as they could do the same for you. They also carry virtually all other makes so can soeak with authority on what is right. And they have a Shoei sake on right now.

Good advice @gsxbarmy  :onya:

I remember going to a bike clothing/safety talk years ago and although the speaker was an arai dealer he said this :

"The best helmet for a person is the one that fits best regardless of how much the helmet costs."

That said a £30 helmet  although leagel isn't the best quality for noise ECT .

In a servey they found that most of us have helmets that don't actually fit properly.
As Dave/barmy say's go to a proper place and try on as many different ones as you can a good helmet sales person will sell you the right helmet for you not the most popular or expensive ones.

Thanks boys for the helpful info. Dropping Mrs Brush off tomorrow- that involves a two hour fester waiting. Lo and behold there is a dealer 10 minutes away.

I learnt a valuable lesson last time.  Buy from a proper shop - not the internet. I'll give the full range the once over.

Thanks for the opinions. Especially on the Shoei lids.

Does the NXR have an internal sun visor?

I have already got the shits with my (relatively new) Shoei Neotec 2
It was EXPENSIVE, is a different fit to all my previous Shoei's (and I've had a few), it's bloody noisy, and generally annoying.

I think next time I'll either go back to a Shoei full face (not lift up jobbie) or perhaps some other brand entirely....

Nxr does NOT have an internal built-in sunvisor.
I use a dark pinlock in mine .

Be aware if you are looking for a helmet with an internal dark visor the shell size increases by about 2 sizes so if your helmet fits your top box/pannier a new helmet with internal visor might not.  I found this out when looking for a new helmet, I bought a top box that would take my Arai Quantum ST and my wife's Shoei NXR but anything with an internal visor did not fit with her helmet so it was a case of stick with Arai (or similar) (it's amazing how small Arai shells are)or buy a bigger top box.

Certainly did not go to plan. Popped into dealers/shop. Open minded about all models. Literally ended in tears. I'm an XL in AGV/Arai etc. Tried Shoei L. Painfull. I couldn't talk properly as my lips were pursed. Felt eyes bulging in sockets. XL too big. Very slack. Glad I tried them on. I'm an inbetween size that doesn't exist.

Got to the bottom of my Arai problem. My side pods had a  2-3mm gap between pods and visor. Hence letting loads of tiny flies in. Arai lids in shop all flush no gap. I hate to admit it - I have an Arai shaped head. Only I'm not prepared for all the hassle again. Mate has just called with his new Arai. He detests the visor latch system. I asked him as it's his first. Would you buy another. Never was the reply.

Back to the drawing board. I'll stick with my trusty AGV. Thank heavens I tried them all on in the shop. Could have been a very costly mistake.

Thanks for all replies.

Have to say Brian I disagree when you say it "doesn't exist". When I first tried on my Shoei, my lips were pursed. They (Helmet City) replaced the side liners with ones which were 1cm wider and it became the most comfortable helmet I have ever owned. As I have said earlier, they are the only company in the UK who are approved Shoei "fitters" and can adjust the interiors using a whole range of different interior fittings to make sure the helmet fits you perfectly. But you need to go to them to get that done.

My Ex-Mrs was very hard to get a lid to fit. We had one bike shop that were more than happy to pull the pads and bits out of other helmets to make up the ideal combination. I guess they just ordered the parts back in after.

A good helmet shop will explain the different shapes of manufacturers shells and go out of their way to come up with the right fitting combination.

Just to add to this thread...

For a few years I bought top end expensive (by my standards) Shoei helmets.
I loved them but wasn't to keen to keep buying another at that price.

Now I'm using mid range Shoei's TZ-X range.
It's a bit of a trade off but I now change them more often and as my head spends a lot of time in them having a new one more often is no bad thing.

I had a Wes Cooley replica Arai helmet back in the '80's. That's the limit of my Arai experience, good helmet at the time and looked the part as well.

Have you tried the Arai Debut, it's a UK only helmet which is basically the old Axcess three with some new graffix.  The up side is that it uses the old SAI visor system which I much prefer to the new "formula 1 derived" locking latch system (your mate is right about them).  If you are a perfect Arai fit as I am this is the best helmet for you, fit is the most important thing for a crash helmet.

Have you looked at Nolan, I couldn't find anything that suited my unique head 😉 and found the Nolan N87.
All the features, great price & quality, but more importantly, comfort & fit.

Thanks for that. I also utterly detested the formula 1 derived latch. My mate made me laugh on how he hates it too. I'm taking Mrs Brush back this week - could be another browsing session again. I wrongly thought they all use the hideous latch system. What started it was the new Arai Chaser X in Suzuki ecstar colours. It looks stunning.

Yeah. Agree Dave. But I'm a fair old trek to a Shoei proper retailer...!
