See attached photos of a battery I purchased in Nov 2018.
I was riding last Saturday and when I pulled in the driveway there was a horrible smell emanating from my GSX. Upon inspection (sniffing) I took off the seat and realised my battery was cooked. It was very hot to touch so waited until it cooled and removed it from the bike reluctantly.
I spoke with Motorcycles R Us about maybe a warranty claim they said "no worries" come get a battery and test to confirm it wasn't regulator/rectifier issue. Fitted new battery and rode over to a mates to run battery tester over it. Cold cranking amps were fine. Fired up the bike and as I revved it the voltmeter kept rising until machine said FAULTY. BUGGER
So I paid for battery today and asked about Genuine Suzuki rectifier part # 32800-42F00 approx. $170 and two days out of Suzuki in Melbourne.
My questions are how do you test a rectifier? Are they repairable ? Is there a less expensive (same quality as genuine) aftermarket unit ?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated fellow Orgsters :hat: :hat: :hat:
@GSXKING - see this thread http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=287.0 - excerpt from this thread for replacement options
For a replacement reg/rec, the following is also recommended as an alternate:
YAMAHA SHINDENGEN FH020AA REGULATOR W/CONNECTORS /REPLACES FH012AA Available from:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380705241034?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
This is also known as a Mosfet and is a quality piece of kit, not prone to overheating like the old diode style reg/rec's that Suzuki fit as OEM. These come in kit form with both parts of a replacement connector block, it's an absolute doddle to fit and looks "factory" when its done.
If you want something more OEM and Suzuki are out of stock then another option is the Tour Max RGU-220 which fits nearly all Yamaha's, the one recommended for the GSX1400 is the one for a XVS1100 03/04 and is EXACTLY the same as OEM. Plugs straight in without having to cut your loom up (like with an electrex one).
As for testing a reg-rec - any good auto electrician should be able to do that for you.
Personal choice would be to find the SHINDENGEN one (above)
Hope that helps.
UPDATE: Just searched on "YAMAHA SHINDENGEN FH020AA REGULATOR W/CONNECTORS /REPLACES FH012AA" on eBay AU, and it seems they are available down under for $169.58 plus tax

There is a cheaper one there without connectors, but you will need the connectors for fitting it to your 14.
DO the search though on eBay.AU, a few options for supplier there. Just make sure "with connectors!"
:salute: :salute: thanks Barmy you have a wealth of knowledge. I appreciate the reply :onya: :onya: :onya:

To test see attached pic (from workshop manual in the download section).
They can be repaired.
The Tourmax (identical to OEM) for 67€ in Germany.
@GSXKING EDIT: Overcharging can also be a grounding/wire issue with the regulator/rectifier! Or with the battery itself.
Andre, good info on Tourmax. Worth a buy to just stick in cupboard. Spoke to Auto Elec mate today, he reckons he can repair a faulty standard reg.
Grog, when I find a good buy I stick the new parts on the bike and the old ones (still ok) find their way to the cupboard.
Andre, yeah a good way. Im opposite, if its not broken i dont fix but like spares. All Good either way. I really like that shop you showed us in Germany.
I don't think it effected the GSX1400, but there was a HUGE recall on Suzuki Reg/Rec's a while back. My B-King had a new one fitted under warrantee and it's due to go back for a recall on the recalled part !!
Although I'm pretty sure it doesn't include the 14's, I would be cautious of buying used (non-14) ones as I've heard story's of the recalled ones occasionally finding their way back onto the market, as did some of the recalled front brake master cylinders.

Either way is fine. As is buying only when needed or repairing.

Shipment to Australia/New Zealand is 42€ regardless of how much you buy. So it may be worth to you if you buy a bunch. Also got Tourmax ignition coils for 61€ a pop. Taking the Tourmax sticker off revealed identical numbers as original coils. A treat as Suzuki does not carry one of the coils (#2/3) anymore.
@Tony Nitrous The bad lot of regulator/rectifier's was bking, 650/1250 bandit and some gsxr1000's but the gsx1400 has a different one to all them so when they go wrong (not to often) it's more of an age problem than a design fault .
The bking' s over here are on thier 2nd recall for reg/rec and think they had another recall for a possible lose bolts in the clutch if I remember correctly.
I'm not so mechanically minded, I managed to get the plug off and it looks OK no burn marks etc. But getting the regulator out OMFG. I need counter rotating wrists F..K me :frustrated: :frustrated: :frustrated: :whatever: :whatever:
@GSXKING Stick at it you'll be ok others have done this so hopefully they can offer some advice 😎
I just responded on the "Continuing - So what did you do to your bike today...?" thread but do it here again so it's in the right place:
@GSXKING I was fretting to do the rectifier job but then surprised of the relative ease.
I put the bike on its sidestand and looked through the side frame triangle to place the tools (good lighting helps). Maybe I have the advantage of long arms :whatever:
Finally extricated the little bastard
I'll have it checked tomorrow and if faulty will organise a replacement. Thanks for all your help fellow orgsters. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
Well my fellow orgsters today I was overwhelmed by the generosity of a fellow member @tuefel - Peter. I messaged him to see if he had a regulator available. I previously bought some clocks from him. He is posting it to me gratis and as payment I will be buying him a beer. :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: Thankyou Peter.
And THANKYOU all the responders to my post for all your help. I will keep you posted on refitting the little bastard. :stir: :stir: :stir:
Well that little bastard is back in place and the bike fired up first go. Tomorrow I will test the voltage output to ensure all is well. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
