Title: Rear shock leaking.. again. Options?
Post by: VladTepes on Tuesday, 25 June 2019, 12:12 PM
In late 2015 I had my shocks rebuilt by http://radmotorcycleshockyrepairs.com.au/index.html.
All was going well but recently the right hand shock has started leaking again....

So I'm starting to wonder what options I might have...

Probably the cheapest (especially given I've powdercoated the stock shocks springs to match) is to get the shock looked at / rebuilt... again. Can anyone in Brissie recommend someone with a good reputation for doing rebuilds, and who would be able to help me set up the suspension to my personal needs?

I've heard this mob are fantastic for helping set up suspensions - but not sure if they do rebuilds/repairs at all?
https://www.facebook.com/racesuspensiontuning

The other option would be to purchase some after-market shocks.

I gather options include YSS, Hagon Nitros and Ohlins of some sort.
And that the Ohlins are very expensive - so that potentially rules those out.

I've had a look through some of the older threads, but decided not to resurrect them (and I'm hoping people who fitted various options may have had more time to evaluate them by now too).

Any and all comments and advice is welcome.  :)

Vlad, no cheap fixes. Rebuild is 4 to 5 hundred at MPE. Had a search for you. Ohlins-$1265 plus freight. Wilbers-1050. YSS-700 to 1600. Ikon -680. Hagon -450. Give Moose a ring, he talks sense. http://www.hagonshocksvictoria.websyte.com.au/

@VladTepes
If you can get them over there then
Hagon Nitro's are a very good quality and very simular spec shock to the standard ones at a very fair price.
I ran a pair without any issues and then are now fitted to del's bike.
I love the
WP shocks I have that I got from barmy but I probably couldn't have afforded them new they are top quality bits of kit.

It all depends how much you want to spend Mike.

On a one-to-one bases, as @seth says Hagon Nitro's are a good option. In your neck of the woods, it looks like https://suspensionsrus.com.au/index.php?route=product/category&path=143 are Hagon stockists - although they don't mention the Hagon Nitro's (the road shocks the do mention are their value range more and whilst they will work, are a bit agricultural). But they may be able to sort you a set of Nitro's if you contact them.

I see the same company also do Nitron and Ohlins. Both are top quality shocks - but obviously at a price.

One option you may like to check out is fitting a set of Ohlins off an XJR1400 Yam. Whilst Ohlins they are manufactured to a price for Yamaha, so don't have the full features, but do work. I think @Hooli has them on his. But you may find a good pair secondhand locally which could be an option.

Vlad, i dont know really. If Wilbers resr work as good as my front Wilbers springs, id choose them.

1300 Yam Dave!

I do have the cheaper ones with just preload adjustments on mine. I also fitted a pair to one of Moth's 14s when I was with her, because they are shorter than standard 14 shocks & softer so lower the bike a bit. I run mine with the forks lifted 7mm through the yokes to compensate for that handling wise.

They do last as mine where fitted when I got my bike & they still work perfectly well after 12 years & a few* miles under their belt.

Did you get yours in Aus @grog or from O/S ?

I put these on mine about 18 months ago. Expensive but good. Purchased through Suspension Improvements at Slacks Creek. Setting is a little firm as I said I carry a passenger occasionally. But I have now gone to single seat rego. Wilbers are a very good brand. I upgraded my 2008 GSAdventure rear to a Wilbers shock rebuild when the OEM shit it self. I got 90,000kms from the original before it leaked all over the floor. Pretty sure I had that done through Suspension R Us in Melb. He was amazed I got to 90k on the OEM.

@BJ did it make a HUGE difference in the ride ?  :whatever: :whatever:

Well compared to the completely shot OEM (84k kms) they are great.
However to be honest I was expecting a bit more.
BUT having said that, the suspension was provided by Wilbers on the basis that I advised that I did carry a pillion at times. And it was really good with the Mrs on the back.
I was after a really ultra smooth ride and while that is not presently as good as I would have liked, the bike is very stable when cornering.
As well, I have adjusted it way off the suggested middle settings (in trying to set it for solo) and haven't really tinkered with it for ages. When I was tinkering you could definitely feel the differences from the adjustments.
It's something I'll have to get back to.
Basically it's pretty good at the moment that I haven't felt the urge to adjust it any further.
If you only have a pillion on your bike a few times a year then when ordering from Wilbers I would advise that always ride solo.

I saw a display yesterday at Laverda show for a guy called GAZI shocks. Has anyone used them ?

One particular set looks like a perfect fit for a 1400  :boogie: :boogie:

My rh shock started leaking last week, on Ebay were a couple of spacers that do away with the adjusting mechanism, I bought them for £10 the pair, I needed the bike on Saturday so stuck a left hand shock on to get me by, it works fine just the knob is at tyre side

@Bob an easy way to add a link to a post here, if you want to:

1) have this site open (where you want to insert the link) and the site you want to post a link to, in another tab.

2) right click on the address bar at the top of the page where it says 'http/www/jimmysbigbackyard' etc  It will turn blue & give you an options list, one of those is 'Copy'  select that.

3) go back to the GSX1400 tab & it'll open where you where before, get the cursor where you want to add the link & right click, options appear, select 'Paste' & bang, it's done.

Long winded writing it all out, but it's only a matter of a few clicks & it's done.  Hope it's of some assistance to ya mate.

One of my mates has a machine shop, spoke to him today, I'm going to visit him tomorrow and see what prices we are looking at, now these ones I have are to suit 100kg rider (I'm a bit more than that) but I take it if they are longer then the preload would be higher, now I'm supposing the ones I have are going to sit at 3rings equivalent so if 8mm longer then 6 rings? If this works I'm willing to get some made for us at cost, hell I'll even post them, but want to try them out 1st

I have personally 'saved' a couple of pairs of shocks, on one the hydraulics were completely shot, so rather than bin them ( I hate doing that ) I modified by removing ALL hyd stuff & cobbled up the old-fashioned tried & tested cam-ring, works a treat, & to those not in the know, looks standard!!
On another set, they were dis-assembled replacement bits made & they too, were 'saved'
I did, however, find them 'awkward' to say the least.

My rear shock also have a little leak. Very little but it isn't dry...

I woundering ... my OEM shocks was rebuild 3 years ago. And now - rebuild it again or buy YSS or Hagon Nitros?
Olny this three options because of price - don't have for Wilbers, Nitron or Ohlins  :embarrassed:
