Title: Buggeration
Post by: Del on Monday, 10 June 2019, 10:23 PM
Here we go - are we sitting comfortably then Ill begin

Saturday off down to Port Glasgow to help a mate with a concourse 1965 Split Screen van Aussie Model (vents higher in rear quarter) - we were changing out the gear box/trans axle
8am - started and 40 minutes late engine on bench - another 60 minutes and trans axle hanging from the 10 ton sky lift crane - we set about  removing the shafts and dropping the oil (hypoide 90 is disgusting stuff) - now I'm not sure how much you know about early VW's but you have to get the tension on the axle tube using paper gaskets - so it fit say 4 then build up check . . . too loose strip add more etc until correct - so this took a good 90 minutes to get correct - we refit the trans axle and begin bolting everything back on and once all fitted nipped up and torques (we werent dirty as every nut and bolt is stainless and new - a pleasure to spanner ion
Another hour or so engine is back in and were buttoning up the wiring and refilling with oil . . . Happy days

Well you would think that - we started it up . . . .All Good and put it into gear while on the ramp all gears there as you would expect from a freshly rebuilt box

dropped it down put it into 1st goes backwards - 2nd same issue - tried reverse goes forwards - somehow the diff had been put in wrong and the car now has 4 reverse gears and one whinny forward

Me mate is exceptionally unhappy . . . . . I might have laughed a bit until I realized we had to do it all again

Del, that first test drive is bloody funny. Mate did same way back. All to do with reduction gears, crown wheel can be flipped over for with or without. Classic trick.
