Title: Donatello's money pit
Post by: Donatello on Monday, 10 June 2019, 07:23 PM
Hey guys, for a couple of years I always wanted a GSX 1400 but since my friends always had fast new bikes I went with them, my last bikes are a KTM 990 SM, then a Z750-R and the last bike before my GSX 1400 was a MT/FZ 09.
What attracts me the most to a GSX 1400 is just the size of the bike, it's so big and the lines resemble the oldschool superbikes from the 80's. I've always wanted to build a GSX 1100 with upgrades brakes, suspenion and wheels but why would I bother when Suzuki already offers the whole package?

The father from a friend had a GSX 1400 and when he died of cancer my friend asked me if I wanted the bike from him, the price was good and the bike had a few upgrades in the form of a GIVI top holder and a MDI fatbar with B-king mirrors. So since two weeks I'm now an owner of a GSX 1400 and I already had some plans with it so I made a list:

- New oil + filter
- New tires
- Powdercoat the white wheels black
- Exhaust, I really want an Akra 4-1 titanium exhaust
- refresh lower front forks, there is some oxidation
- Gear indicator in the rpm gauge

New oil and filter is easy, but new tires and powdercoat them black meant also new bearings and since the wheels came out I took out the front forks to paint.
Since both wheels had to be removed I had to put the bike up with a crane and I also started to remove the exhaust because there was a company on ebay that sold the Akra exhaust. As many people here know the exhaust bolts are a pain in the *ss the remove. I already socked them a couple of days in oil but sadly one broke off. I also send the gauges to Paul in the UK so he can fit the gear indicator and switch the oem background lights to white (not a fan of the blue)

The bike before I rode it home

Snapped bolt.

Luckely I have a father who rides old pre-WWII Harley's so he knows a thing or two about snapped bolts. I also just did a turbo build on my MX-5 so I'm no stranger to rust.

I bought the Akrapovic on ebay but I got a message from the seller it would take 4-6 weeks to order the exhaust if that was oke or else they would refund me. Since I can't find the Akrapovic anywhere else I said I would wait, but today I got the message they can't deliver until october at earliest.... That means the rest of the summer riding with the stock exhaust that has a rattle on both sides (probably loose parts in the exhaust). If someone can point me to a new or good as new titanium Akra please let me know!!

On the bright side yesterday I managed to win on ebay XJR1300 ohlins rear shocks (the good ones) for a steal (seller still has to contact me tho so I hope everything goes well) maybe a good moment to buy ohlins/hyperpro front springs also.

I know this one was from a member on here, can someone point me to his build topic please?

Owned by Des here in Brisbane.
Not sure if it's his first or 2nd 1400.
The first one was stolen (on CCTV) and never seen again.

Ok so after thinking everything trough what I wanted to do I made a list and went shopping on ebay, amazing to see how much more stuff there is in the UK compared to the rest of Europe.

What I've done:

I already send the dails to Paul (Tommohawk) to fit white LED's and the gear indicator
Air filter (also needed, see photo)

In progress:

ignition and alternator cover refurb
Wheels are almost done getting powdercoated black with new Angel GT tires

Waiting for parts:

I won Ohlins XJR shocks on ebay for only 300,- euro's, should be here in a couple of days
Braided brake lines
New progressive front springs (Hyperpro)
LED indicators from China

To do:

Install new front fork seals and bushes
Refurb the front fork
Install the full Akra system I bought on ebay UK, really happy with this since it makes the bike look so much nicer.
New wheel bearings (really needed, see photo)

Still searching for a passenger rest left side without the exhaust mount.

Stuff I want to do in the future:

New/aftermarket oil cooler
Matt airbox sidecovers
Aftermarket rider pegs

Speaking of money pit, have an add up when you're done & let us know what the bike owes you / how much you've put into it.  That'd be very interesting I reckon.

Spend my day off sanding and polishing the side covers, I wanted a more brushed look so I used a red scotchbright pad as my last step, then I covered it with 3 coats of heat resistant clear coat.
I sprayed the Suzuki logo black then sanded the overspray off with a higher grit sanding paper.

I could have done them more thorough but the small corners took a lot of time and between working on the bike I also had to care for my 3 month old baby.

They've come up nice, not meant for close ups, but looking at them from standing, they'll look very smart & a bit different to the usual (mine) polished cases.

@grog
They are similar quality to the Suzuki std shocks and have the same fittings but I belive they are very slightly shorter than the gsx shocks

Thanks Seth. So a good option if my standard ever stuff up. I like the stock ones, had them serviced by shop, not a lot of money, seem to work for me. I dont think i need to spend lots for any better. Bike never wallows or snakes, rebuilding was a great option in my books.

Lower spec aren't they ?

Suzuki shocks are 3 way adjustable.

I think you are right Tony, they are a lower spec.  Yamaha only got away with the ohlins badge as they own ohlins so can do what they want.

I think the xjr so models had semi adjustable rear shocks.
The stand model were lower spec .
Only so were originally badged ohlins but I think they used these shocks on all later models . :onya:

Yamaha used to be part owner of a Ohlins, they no longer own a controlling share.

They had enough control over the company in the past to put gold paint and a sticker on some not so special shocks.

The XJR Ohlins I've seen didn't have compression, preload and rebound adjustment.

@Tony Nitrous
You could only adjust the spring preload nothing else
I fitted a set to my older xjr when I had it that the only reason I know .

I know HEL also makes one but it's to expensive and I don't like the looks of the HEL version.

Which of these two can you guys recommend?

I have a oil cooler from Aaron Radiators om my 1400.

Fitment to the frame, fan and oil lines are spot on.

Despite their claim that the side covers will fit, they do not. Easy fix,  just Shorten either the top or lower "ears" and drill a new hole.

I couldn't be bothered to mention this to them...emailing them would take me longer than the actual fix.

I just fitted the coolex version on my bike.
Paint job on the cooler is poor, paint is all soft and will come off even with the slightest scrape.
I have aftermarket radiator cover that needed filing in the mounting holes to make it fit.
But still i'm pretty happy with it, seems to do its job as a cooler well :onya:

So between work and a four month old baby I had to find some time to work on the 1400 since I planned to go to the biker classic races at Spa. Because of this I didn't took many photo's of the work I have done to the bike but here is a small list:

Gear indicator in the RPM dail thanks to Paul (Tommohawk)
New air filter
Oil + oil filter
PAIR block off plates
Braided brake lines
Ignition and alternator cover refurb
Wheels powdercoated black with new Angel GT tires
New wheel bearings
Installed new front fork seals, bushes etc.
Refurb the front fork (silver hammer rite, then a red Scotch Brite pad to give it some texture, then 4 coats of 2k clear varnish, will post close-up pictures soon)
New progressive front springs (Hyperpro)
LED indicators from China
Akrapovic exhaust
New oil cooler from Aaron Radiators (this was a big pain in the *ss since the side guards didn't line up with the holes and the cooler is much thicker so I had to bend the guards a lot which I didn't like and still doesn't look good, I have to go over this in the future)
Repainted several brackets and cleaned a lot of bolts to look almost as good as new

The bushes in the front fork really needed replacement and I'm glad I did this before I went on the trip to Belgium, in the end it wasn't that hard but I made sure I checked everything twice before tightening everything down.
I finished the bike a day before we would ride away and during the testdrive I found out the front wheel lost air very quick. Just before 5pm I took it to a bike shop and he took the tire of the wheel and between the tire and wheel was a piece of cloth, he removed it and after that the problem was solved! I learned a lot during the past few weeks working on the 1400 and I'm glad I didn't cut corners anywhere and took my time to research things I didn't knew or was unsure about.

On the trip the bike drove really comfortable and my only complaint is the seat, the power of the 1400 was more then enough to keep up with the Aprilia Tuono from my friend (who had the bike for years where this trip was the first drive on the 1400 for me!) on the straights but also in the corners. I plan on doing some minor modifications this winter (power commander and changing spark plugs etc) and I hope to keep this bike for the years to come!

I won't bore you guys to much with photo's from Spa but here are a few so you have an impression, it was a real crazy event and I have never seen so many bikes in one place. The best one for me was a perfectly restored Honda CBX1000 that looked better then the day it rolled out of the factory.

Bonus: a perfect restored TL1000S, only complaint I have that the wheels don't have the original color, maybe I can add one to my garage someday.

Didn't touched the bike for almost a week since I came back from Spa, she was sitting in the garage so I gave her a clean and switched the front mudguard around (had it mounted backwards just before my trip  :rofl2: )

Since it was still dry but cloudy I took her for a small ride, I'm so amazed how smooth the bike is and how effertless the torque is deliver (I think I saw 200km/h in 3th gear on a small back road)

And back in the garage warm and dry

There are a few thinks I have to fix, while idling there is something like a small misfire now and then (really vague pop in the background) and while under heavy acceleration I can hear a small exhaust leak I think, sounds like fluttering but maybe its the valves?
I also want to rebuild the rear shocks (one adjuster is stuck) for my peace of mind, the Ohlins XJR1300 I bought are not as good according to you guys (I should have done more research) but they come in handy for my GSX1100 ET project. Or maybe I save some money and buy Ohlins STX36 shocks later this year. But first I want to buy a PC 3 or 5 and get the bike mapped, it runs great but this is also for the peace of mind for myself. Can the torque/timing restricting in the first two gears also bypassed with a Powercommander or is this only possible with a TRE? I have the Tomohawk gear indicator so I think if I fit a TRE it will delete the gear indicator?

Kanerdog/Matt is making an exhaust bracket for me so I will be deleting the passenger pegs and I want to remove the helmet lock (I hope it's possible with a small touch up on the frame instead of powercoating/painting the whole frame).

Didn't had much time to ride since my wife went back to work so I had to take care of our newborn son (I work in the evening and weekend) so I had some time to work out some "bugs". First thing I did was order some new pro-bolts for the front and rear calipers, when I installed the braided brake hoses I cleaned the bolts with a scotch-bright pad but it took the coating of the oem bolts so they rusted after the first time I cleaned the bike. The new pro-bolt bolts are stainless steel and quaility is amazing.

Next week the bike goes to the dyno for a Powercommander 5 and a remap on the rolling road, I'm looking forward to it and I hope to gain a bit more torque and souplesse.

I also needed a new helm and I ran into a "few times" used Shoei GT air for cheap, I normally wear Shark but I must say the Shoei is amazing (but I will never pay 600,- euro's for one)

Not a PC owner but AFAIK there are no ignition modules for the 14 available from Powercommander. So no adjustment for timing restriction with PC. Of course, fueling  in these gears can be adjusted in the restricted gears.

A TRE will kill the functioning of Tomahawk's gear indicator (as well as most gear indicators). It will also affect the  Gear input function of the PCV (allows for map adjustment based on gear and speed - I assume that this PC function is usable on the 14).

Thats what I thought, I talked with my tunes and he said he never saw actual extra performance on the dyno with TRE's. The PCV has a port for quickshifter, maybe something I can ask for my birthday later this year

So starting this year we had the whole covic-19 situation, the bike stood still for months and in april I wanted to take it for a ride around town but the front brakes where seized  I ordered new seals from Ebay and rebuild them and fitted new Brembo brakepads. My wife bought a 2014 Street Triple R which I took out for a spin whenever I could! Such an easy bike with a real addictive intake sound. I didn't ride the 1400 much but when I did I had a great time and swisting the throttle to feel the torque never gets old. In my mind I already made plans and I stumbled upon Yoshi ST-1 cams, a quick transaction and 24hours later I had them home (don't tell the wife!)

And just as fate would have it, I saw the bike where it all started with for sale... Kanerdog's GSX1400. I looked at the advert and quickly clicked it away, the next few days I had trouble sleeping... After a week I contacted the seller (the guy who bought it from Kanerdog) and he was located in Belgium, a 4 hour drive from where I live. Carefully I tried to convince the wife I had to take a "look" at the Wobbler but you know what they say, never meet your heroes... well after first eye contact I was in love and the deal was done. A few weeks later another trip to Belgium to pickup the bike and now it sits in the garage :) At the moment I'm also in the process of building a new home so for now it sits in a pretty small garage but the garage in the new house will have enough room for two bikelifts, floor heating and a big workbench. Also you guys don't have to guess which 1400 will get the Yoshimura ST-1 cams ;)

The owner in Belgium switched out the standard brakes for Beringer 6 pots and switched the oil-cooler since the big one cooled to much and the bike wouldn't get up to temp. The bike came with all bike-and engine stands ofcourse.

So I've made some plans for the winter. I don't like the small and thin Renthal handlebar, my other GSX1400 has a fatbar that is also a little wider that I like much more so I think I'll order the same but in black for the Wobbler. At the same time I want to install some barend mirrors. I also want to change out the seat to something more sporty/racy looking, I saw this GSX1400 and I really like the look of the seat, is this the same one? https://www.webike.net/sd/533599/

Also this picture convinced me to keep the blue GSX and make it look like this one in the future ;)

Got a package from Japan, I just love the look of the seat, might not be everyone cup of tea but in my eyes it makes the bike more sporty and modern. In the same package where some other small parts but that is for another day ;)

Thanks Notty, that's a lot of NZ rupees and only two and a half months to ship. Still very nice though.

I had a 20% discount and shipping was only 5 working days from Japan to the Netherlands. Padding is harder, comparable with modern sportbikes and the seat is also narrower. I think its perfect for sporty riding when transfering my weight from one side to the other side of the bike.

Hi Donatello,
You've done great things with those bikes.
My question is, do you know what type of rear sets are on the bike with the red cam cover.
I recently fitted a Metisse rearsets, they are a bit higher and further rearward than Coerce.
When you asked Matt for an exhaust mount did he offer the same as on his bike?
I ask because the Metisse rearsets mean the r/h passenger peg mount interferes with my foot/heel when I'm on the track.

Thank you.
Alternatively, if anyone knows where I could source such a mount, please let me know. And thanks for that too.

Hey Teufel,

The brand of the rearsets on that bike is Agras. Really expensive but Agras makes the most beautifull parts for the GSX1400. The engine mounts are also from Agras.

Matt can make two different exhaust hangers, one that mounts up on the passager peg (as on my white/bleu bike on the previous pages) or one from the shock mount as on the red/black bike. I think he still has the molds for them so if he's willing maybe he can make you one.

Seat looks great, brings the tail end in proportion to the tank I reckon.  Pretty awesome bike, nice to see it being well looked after.

On webike Japan, its the daytona cozy seat. There was a discount but still pretty expensive at 30.000 yen. I'm an ambulance driver and in my country everyone in healthcare got a 1000,- euro bonus because of the extra efforts during this Covic outbreak. Aslo this summer I worked 40-50 hours a week so I treaded myself on the seat :p

its 30mm lower then the OEM one. Its also narrower and the "couch" feeling is completely gone and it feels much more like a normal bike now (almost the same as my Triumph Street Triple R)

Look at the rear axle, the anodized red conical items are the pick up spools. The rear stand has a fork on each side.

Lovely bike Donatello,
I have the same Agras engine mounts on mine and the same rear sets as yours, Coerce if I'm not mistaken, on my 1400 turbo.
I have spent a bit of cash online with Webike, they have some good stuff on there.
