Title: New project
Post by: Snapey on Thursday, 06 June 2019, 03:31 PM
As if I haven't got enough to do I picked this sorry looking K5 up yesterday to clean up. I just happen to have a new seat cover lying around so that's an easy fix & the fork stanchions are perfect. Scotch-Brite silicon carbide wheels will take care of the tarnished stainless & aluminium & a few minor blemishes in the paint shouldn't be a huge problem to sort out. The engine sounds strong & quiet and only just run in at 79000km. The only fault with the engine is it won't rev past 6000rpm but that was a different story when I put my b/w tank on with the external filter.

At the moment both stands are being taken up by Hondas but not for long and I'm quickly running out of room too.

Just 2 engine covers that need attention... The rest will clean up nicely

Good score

That's going to look great when its done, personally, I'm not a fan of black wheels, to me they just look too bland, but hey, its your bike.
Enjoy. :smile2:

I'm with you Lawrie regarding black wheels. A bit of rim tape brightens them up though.

So the 14 now sits on a bike lift so stripping will start tomorrow in preparation for a full restoration. Reason for full resto ... I'll keep it & flog the blue/white .... I think.  :undecided: :confused1:

I'd say it lived outside & if that's the case anything left outside near the coast will go like that if not looked after.

The photo's make it look good.

Even inside a garage near the coast corrodes stuff without looking after it A LOT.

Pete,

It would be great if you could document this restoration. My K5 is in better shape than this one but suffers from some common issues as I think it was exposed to similar conditions for some of its life. This is a pity as these bikes are solid as a rock mechanically

My fork tubes have some pitting and the lowers are dull and frosty. The headlight brackets have similar damage to the chrome.

My bike needs a good detailing and some light restoration and refurbishment. The trouble is I don't want to take it off the road to do the work.

In the four years I've owned it I have replaced the chain and sprockets, tyres, rear brake pads and the battery. Servicing has simply been oil, filter and a new set of plugs.

The bike came with a Staintune muffler and I have an original canon if I want to go original.

Our Irish friend did the test ride on it before I finalised the purchase and couldn't fault it.

It's a keeper so I'd like to clean it up to be my classic machine as well as regular rider.

I'm hooked on the grunt and don't feel I need anything more modern.

Any tips on the work you are doing would be a help in improving my bike.

Not happy with this Lawrie  :furious:

That's like saying a beautiful woman looks boring in a 'little Black dress' it's all about class, less = more :notworthy:'
