Title: Angel GT
Post by: grog on Tuesday, 21 May 2019, 07:54 PM
Because new Angel GT 2 now out some great deals in OZ on originals. I find them great tyres. Priced up today, theyll sell me a set $100 cheaper than last year. I just replaced front recently, sent Pirelli Email to ask if I should get original for rear or if GT2 would work.

I have had AngelGT's before in the A spec for heavier bike/rider. I did like them but not for the $$$$. Maybe they are more realistically priced now.

I've been using Metzler's as recommended by Con at Brisbane Motorcycle Tyres in Moss St. Can't fault them in any way, they were cheaper than Pirelli previously.

I've heard Metzler and Pirelli are one and the same i.e. Metzler does all the experiments and Pirelli use that info.

Metzeler and Pirelli are under same roof. Maybe even made side by side in same building  :coffeescreen:

As @Andre says Pirelli and Metzler are just brand names from the same company both make a are made in the same factory in Italy I think.

Same company but 2 brands broaden the number of models that's available to us :onya:

I have now Angel GT's. They are OK, but their legendary km's seems to be just a legend. And a bit slippery they are too compared to Michelins PR 4 GT's. PR 4 or PR 3.
Now I'd like to try Dunlop Road Smart 3's. They have been good in German sport touring tyre test's
They are also much cheaper than Pirelli or Michy.
Does anybody have any experiences of Road Smart 3's in 14? Good or bad ones?

I use roadsmarts on my MZ, work pretty good for me but the bike isn't as heavy as a 14, and has less grunt.

T24, interesting your thoughts. You have lots of grunt so you should know about grip. Personally i dont have any probs on my stock 14 with Angels. Used Michelin before, never had a grip prob with any. Maybe im just too old and slow. Quite possible. My rear Angel just clicked 24 th ks. Front went at 19. Last night i sent email to Pirelli Italy, they answered immediately. My question was as i just replaced front with original should i use Angel 2 on rear, will it be ok. They answered no, fit original to rear. Replace pair with 2 when needed. Also asked about Pirelli and Metzeler. Answer, same rubber just different tread patterns. Can be be made Italy, China or Egypt. Further search says Pirelli 45% China owned. Know nothing about Dunlop except mate had them on MT10, he found them slippery.

Speaking to a guy at Mt Mee the other day - had a nice ZX10. It was new because he'd written off the old one when it aquaplaned on its Pirelli Angel GT's, something he said has never happened with Michelins he's had in the past.

Now that's just one story so its hardly a trend. It's also a different bike so that comes into it as well.

@grog
The biggest difference between Angel and PR comes at cold weather, below 10°C ( 50°F ).
Maybe temps near zero are not so common there?

I use the Angel GT on both my GSX1400 and K1600, I am very happy with grip and lifespan.
I have tried Michelin & Dunlop but I do not like the camber of their tyres, it makes the bike fall into the corner, I prefer a more neutral feel.

I've been using Metzeller Roadtec01 front and rear on my VFR800.  Insanely good grip.  Two-up about 90% of the time.  I weigh around 80/85kg and the wife is 50kg.  No complaints about wear rates or grip and I'm able to lean the bike right over.  I have about a 1/4 inch of tyre on the edge that is unused.  Tyre pressure is 36 front and 42 rear. Excellent grip in the wet as well. Especially with the rear tyre looking like a MotoGP rear wet weather tyre.   Standard tyres, not the heavy weight option.

The GSX1400 had Michelin Road 5 on the rear and Road 4 on the front when I purchased it.  Running the same tyre pressures as the VFR.  No complaints with these tyres either.  Able to scrape the pegs with the wife on the back and no signs of slippage, totally stable.  Can't comment on wear as we only went on about 1/2 dozen rides before I stripped the bike down to the frame to give it the TLC that the previous owner neglected to give.  Now going through a semi-restoration with replacing all bearings and any worn parts, fuel tank was a shocker (if you've seen my other posts on this).  Now trying to get it all back together and take the OEM exhaust off to replace the rusted headers. Already snapped one bolt but hoping to get it out with a easy-out tool on the weekend as well as some penetrating oil/spray on the bolts.

I was considering using the new Angel GT2 when I need to replace tyres on either bike, but I'm not sure.  Really love the Metzellers.

Fallen Angel

14680 km, 9121 miles,
1.2 mm left and 0.5 bar, 7 psi left when I came home today..

I know what I'm doing tomorrow after work...

Dunlop Road Smart 3 was already waiting, and I was going to change it next monday, just after one year with Angel GT (10.6.2018)
Now I've had Michelin Pilot Road 2, PR 3, PR 4, PR 4 GT and Angel GT during my 72514 km (136248 km total).
Now I try Dunlop.

I've recently put Angels on my 14, GT rear & ST front.

I much prefer how the bike is riding & feeling to PR4s, but I did do some other work on it which will affect things. I'm pretty sure though it's not felt this good since running Storm STs years ago.

Some calculations:
Five tyres / 72514 km makes 14503 km / tyre in my use.
Angel GT lasted 14680 km and died 3 days before change. Not much better than average.
Angel GT and PR 4 GT (16000 km) are two best tyres what I know so far.

I'm running S21's on another bike and they are easily beyond there I'm willing to push them at the moment. 46 & 48 degree lean scrubbing them in. I'm keen to try the new S22's that are said to be longer lasting.

I'm never 100% sure how much use sticky sportsbike tyres are on big brutes like my 14, Busa and H2 SX but I feel more confident punting them through the twistys and have never had a drama.

I haven't tried the Angels but the heavy duty version is questionable as I run sticky tyres on heavier bikes than a 14, unless your getting better mileage from them.

Now we are talking dual compound against triple.

I did like the Angels but have changed to Metzeller
The Metzeller Roadtec was similar to Angel with the compounds. I got 12000km from roadtec over 12 months. I changed jobs so not commuting as much on flat and wore out sides on the twisties . Ended up with tyre like pyramid- not very comfortable.
Recently changed to sportec and don't expect to get as much mileage but much much better than gt in corners - so much more confidence
The real fast guys here are using Racetec which are softer and stickier again.
I think for touring would be toss up between the Metzeller & Angel.

Now that brings back memories. We used to pay a fortune for that shape tyre in the '70's.

Who remembers using Dunlop KR96 race tyres?

Was it the Dunlop tt100 that you fitted one way round on the front (it wore pointed) and the other way round (it wore square) on the rear?

I used to use Avon Roadrunners by default.

It might have been the avon's that were duel fittable but I can't remember it was a long time ago.

Never heard that one Seth and I can't remember if they were directional for that to happen.

We used them on a CB750 in the 1st Castrol 6 hour in 1970 although I think they were K81's then. The triangles got too expensive on the race bikes at a set every meeting & the K81/TT100's were almost as good so I ended up using them at a set every 4 or 5 meetings.

KR96 on front and TT100 on back.

I used to have TT100's on my bikes back then - "upgraded" them to the Dunlop Red Arrows which were out for a while on my GT750 - but preferred the TT100's for their handling.

It could be you Jeff. I'd say that kid is about 50 now so you're in the ball park for age. I always thought you were older than that but you haven't looked after yourself so you just might be a very old looking 50. :onya: :hat:
