Title: 2006 ECU failure
Post by: RickC on Friday, 17 May 2019, 06:22 PM
Hi All,
A friend at work had a fault the other day, he was blowing ignition and fuel fuses, he thought it may have been the ECU, to check he gave me his ECU to plug in to my bike.

It blew both fuses on my bike so he has ordered a 2nd hand K8 with Key and a 2nd hand K1 ECU.

Does anyone know what you have to do to fit a K1-K4 ECU to a 2005 on model? Does the single plug fit and if any wiring changes are required?

Cheers,
Rick

Gidday Rick, haven't seen you in ages!  No idea on your mates delema, but I be plumping for an ECU & ignition of the same year, preferably the K8.  Early models didn't have an immobiliser, think from memory they came in with K5.  I really don't know if they'd even plug in.

The earlier ecu and wiring is quite different between early and later models I've not heard of anyone to this swop and even things like the top yoke (imobiliser Ariel mount very important that it's in the correct position in relation to the key not needed for the realier ecu)and r/h switch gear(lights on/off becomes hazard lights in/off in later models but lights on/off are controlled by the ecu on the later models) is different between the models .
I wish your mate good luck but as col said I'd be looking for the correct ecu rather modifying the bike I'm sure it could be done but I don't thing it's very simple .

Rick, i know nothing really but to fit K1 ECU you throw it in bin, get correct ECU. Just my thoughts.

Am pretty sure just off the top of ma head that early ecu has one big plug later models have 2 plugs going in?

According to admin  (who has seen them all) on German forum there are 3 different ECUs on the 14: K2-K3, K4 and K5+

Just get the one that is right for the model.

He has bought a K8 one plus keys. He has bought a K1 for not much money and will probably pick up a K1 harness for an insurance policy, he will try and get his K6 ECU repaired.

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Col,
Still here, a bit more lurking at the moment, I've a few too many projects on the go, trying to restore an old GSX750/1100 andalmost got the fuel injection squared away on my 1600 Cortina powered Sprite.
No plans on my 1400 going or leaving this great forum.

Cheers,
Rick

I think I picked up info slightly wrong .
The k8 stuff will fit straight on to the k6 with no problems at all.
All gsx1400's from.k5 are exactly the same apart from the paint work (the b/w making them slightly faster  :stir: )
So he should be good to go .

Hi Seth,
I agree K5's up will fit, not too many Special Editions in the UK but it's actually the White paint that is faster so the SE's have more White paint so it follows that they have the edge on the B/Ws  :stir:Cheers Rick
