I've been there and it is (was ?) stunningly beautiful.

:bugga:
Yeah, been a couple of times, went there for my honeymoon, and went there with my wife and step daughter and rented an apartment.
Interesting place. Love the Eiffel Tower, Mon Martre, Arc de Triomphe, The Louvre, Notre Dam etc etc, but the Catacombs is my favourite, it freaks the Mrs out.
Bugger about Notre Dam though...

Have you been down in the Catacombs Vlad ?

I might not be as 'cultured' as some people, but to me, what's in those pics I find totally abhorrent.
Not you Tony, what's in those pics.
When they "re-did" Paris they quarried huge amounts of stone from under it, the reason much of Paris has a similar style and look. As Paris expanded they got to the cemetery's / graveyards around the outside. Someone had the bright idea of digging up millions ( 6 million?) of the dead and putting them back in the now huge quarry's below. Many years later it's a tourist attraction.

It is sad to see history go like that but they will have enough money to re build and the very brave fireman crews that saved the whole complex were out standing as well as the people that saved the works of art

"At the website GoFundMe, more than 50 campaigns related to the cathedral fire had been launched globally on Monday, John Coventry, a spokesman for Go Fund Me, said.
Meanwhile, the family investment firm of French luxury goods magnate Francois-Henri Pinault will contribute 100 million euros ($A158 million) towards the rebuilding of the cathedral, news agency AFP has reported"
It took 200 hundred years to build, I cant see them sorting that lot out in 5 years.
Chinese would have it done in 12 months :whistling: :stir:

I'd be quite surprised if it wasn't closer to 10.
It's never going to be a rush job to fix.
In NZ it would take 5 years to get Resource Consent before you could even touch whats left.
Col the Chinese would get a bulldozer there clear the site and 3D Print a new one.......by Xmas
Just look at the pace of the Sagrada Familia building works in Barcelona. It's impressive but even so things take time.
5 years? Nah.
Seriously :confused1: just raze it and start again, we won't have another 200 years to waste repairing it. You know with the onset of climate change and all :boogie: :boogie:
I dunno, maybe the lead roof would have come in handy with the increased radiation everywhere...
Its is a sad thing BUT and its a flipping huge but... I think its disgusting how so many companies have offered money and such to help the rebuild.. Whats fecking disgusting is none of these companies have ever offered any money towards things THAT ACTUALLY matter like deforestation, or the plastics crisis in our oceans or global warming research.. 100 million towards solving some of the more important global issues would be money better spent. Not some old building that 90% of the world couldnt give a shit about.

Hmmmm
they don't seem to worry about what caused the fire -being serious is it only me that thinks it is very strange ??

Col,
Just for a bit of context, it was often the case that some religious people desparately wanted to be interred in sacred sites but there was simply not enough ground for them to be buried in. The church therefore created ossiaruies (basically bone stores) so that peoples wishes could be accommodated.
If you find it macabre, fair enough - but hopefully it will give you some comfort to know this sort of thing is not done with ill-intent and with the wish of the dead.
When I took the GSX to Budapest a few years ago I stopped off at the Sedlec Ossuary; the nearby church had had soil from the holy land or some other such thing brought to its grounds and therfore became the interment place of choice for many people who could not be accommodated. At this site the bones were arranged decoratively as well as being stacked in alcoves:

Each to their own!
Pete.
Yes, agreed Pete, each to their own. :onya:
@Notty :coffeescreen: :happy1: :onya: :clapping:
@KiwiCol YOU THINK THAT'S FREAKY ?! I SAW THIS IN PORTUGAL..

It's like anything, if you expose yourself to it enough, you get desensitised. (and arrested if caught!) :happy1:
Seriously though, I wouldn't cross the street to see anything like that.
Police have a few witnesses :)
Agree Col, very funny Notty.
