Hi all,
I've come across a really strange issue with my bike. It's currently sitting on 39858 miles, but I have noticed it jumping from that figure down 100 miles to 39758, then back again....I've never seen this happen on any other bike before - Has anyone got any experience of this issue?

@DanGSX I've not heard of that before hope you get it sorted sounds like I could be a LCD issue or a software problem but it's a new one to me .
If your bike is a k5 onwards I'd be happy to meet up and swop over clocks to check and see if it's the bike or the clocks that have the problem.

Thanks for the offer of help, I'd love to take you up on that, but I have a K2 unfortunately. Do you think my bike could be illegally clocked? Is this typical behaviour do you know? It has been counting up normally before now....
I'm not sure the plugs are the same on the earlier clocks but could still try and if they are we can still check yours
Its not a thing I've heard of before either clocking of a gsx1400 or the odo meter reading going wierd .

Hi seth, again, thanks for the help.
I will say that my instrument cluster has never been 100% functional. When I bought the bike it had a smash on the front center part where the neutral light is, and the buttons don't work to change trip. I looked past this, as the actual Odometer was counting up miles quite normally, so that's all that mattered to me at the time.
Not too sure what to do now. I'm more susceptible to get electrical issues as I ride in all weathers and this is my main transport.
Maybe I should be looking into getting the entire cluster replaced.

@DanGSX Ive a spare set of clocks down here that came off my K2 - all work as should only this one reads in MPH but trips in KPH - happy for you to borrow to rule to check out = I know its a ways away but
@seth occasionally pops by so if he is in the area he can collect and bring up the hill a bit closer

Hi Del, thanks so much for that offer of help.
At this stage I am pretty out of my depth and don't know where to start. I've just taken a ride home from work and found a couple more points:
1. The issue seems to get better/worse with vibration. I don't know if I'm just imagining this, but whenever I picked up speed or increased the revs, the display went absolutely ballistic (flickering), but only ever affecting the "Hundred" unit.
2. The 10's and single units appear to be working fine and counting up correctly, so there's no issue with the actual counting itself I believe.
Taken a video to show what I'm talking about. Could I be the first one to encounter this with the GSX? Hmm...
Any ideas? Probably not, I'm just clutching at straws here.
Bike seems to run fine, no issues with that.
I do believe the correct mileage to be 39860, as it was 39858 before I left work and I only work 2 miles away from home.
Sounds to me like a lose soldered joint on the board in the clocks

I doubt it's changing to 7, it's just a lot of the segments are cutting in & out so only a '7' is left. I bet when you tick over for showing 9 there, it'll still flick back to 7.
You comment on damage suggests a faulty circuit board which would makes sense. Someone clever with a soldering iron might be able to save it.
I reckon Hooli has hit the nail on the head. However, as far as I know, once they start loosing segments, they're pretty much non-repairable.
Depends where the break is Col, if it's the link to the display it's probably fixable.
It might be possible to get a display from some broken clocks & put it in, that way the correct mileage etc would stay on the bike.

@Hooli Am I correct in believing that the mileage will be stored in the ECU? So essentially it will still be counting correctly, but I'll never get to see the correct result on-screen.
Also, it seems to get worse as soon as I change gear, but this is probably the vibration through the bike. Is this a known thing to happen? I am curious as you speak of losing segments and that generally they may not be repairable?
I had a word with seth about this and he gave me good advice on how to start checking this issue, so as soon as I get some spare time i'll give it a go.
As far as I am aware the mileage isn't stored in the ECU - as mentioned I changed my clocks over as reading in KPH to MPH set and bike lost about 10K (which I reckoned was the conversion from Kilometers to miles - well it worked out in my head)
If you get over to the West coast happy plug mine into you bike to see if it rectify s the issue

Unplug clocks and clean the connectors for a start. If that doesn't cure it then it will be a solder dry joint on the circuit board or failing LCD display.

Aye I believe it's stored in the clock's ECU, as the mileage follows the clocks if you swap them between bikes.

I could come over and have a look if you like Dan. I have replaced the leds in the display with blue ones so have the necessay skills if a repair is required? Sounds like there could be some internal damage from the description of your other symptoms.

They are as the clocks I swapped over had the later clock covers (with immobilizer) which I needed to swap to fit to mine but everything works on my K2
