Title: Does your bike use oil?
Post by: Newtons on Wednesday, 10 April 2019, 09:42 PM
Mine seems to be using oil.

I did a change of oil and filter and it was at the top level mark of the sight glass. After about 400km over the weekend it's dropped around 6-8mm. I filled with Penrite MC-4 10W40 full synth.

It's not leaking anywhere and no smoke from the exhaust that I've noticed.

Does yours lose oil? At what rate?

Cheers,

Pete

There you have it
Using fully synthetic oil 8n an engine designed for semi-synthetic oil
None of our 3 ever use a drop between changes running a fair quality semi-synthetic oil.
There have been many disscutions on oil what's best and what you should use.
Each to there own .

It surprises me that semi-synth versus fully synth would make a difference to consumption. But that's what you're saying I gather and also that it's being burnt? Just seems weird that I've not seen or smelt any smoke.

I guess I'll use semi-synth next time and compare consumption to what I'm seeing with fully.

Thanks!

Mine doesn't use a drop & it's got a few miles on it these days. It's always run semi-syth too.

Maybe you didn't burn any at all. It might just have been a bubble that settled after you ran it for a while.

I've got fully synthetic in mine at the moment, it doesn't burn any.

I always use full synthetic and it does not lose a drop.

Hope so.

So - once you'd done the oil change, did you run it for a few minutes and then check the oil again, as once it's all circulated, you may well find a drop in the level as the filter and the cooler take up their quantity of oil.

Also - how did you check it - off the mainstand or on the mainstand. You have to check the oil level off the mainstand (seems crazy but that's how it is.

If you are not burning any then you have no issue; just check it now and then again in a few hundred km's to see if its dropped any.

The oil level checking was a subject of discussion recently. Barmy is 100% correct. I get the missus to hop on the bike and just keep it upright trying not to put any weight on the seat.
Or you can hop on the bike yourself and take a photo of the sight glass with your phone.
I fill my engine with oil to around 2/3 to 3/4 between the two marks.
Filling to top mark while on centre stand will have it over full.
Mine's done 70k on semi synth. Never uses oil.

Actually I lied earlier, mine has used oil three times. Twice when the oil cooler split & once when the oil cooler hoses fell apart.

maybe that's what's happening then, leaking under pressure from the oil hoses or cooler assembly?

have a good look around underneath the bike to spot any tell tale damp dark patches.   If you find a damp patch, take a pic for us . . . :onya:

My 14 doesn't use oil. The oil level won't drop during 5000 km.
No matter is it synthetic "bike oil" or mineral based 15W40 diesel oil. Both will work OK.
132 000 km on the clock.

No, mine has never used a drop. As far as semi or fully syn, cant possibly see how any difference in using . Full syn is a higher grade oil but semi is listed for 14, thats why i use it.
