Title: Aftermarket Key 2005 onwards
Post by: Dan B on Sunday, 07 April 2019, 09:15 AM
Hi All,

For those of you who have a 2005 or later 14 with the immobiliser, i've recently discovered that you do not need to buy a genuine key and get it reporgrammed by suziki:

I just recently had a key cut for my 2008 GSX1400, from 'Mr Minute', an Aussie key cutter store. They used a generic Mr Minute key with the correct blade and put a programmed chip in the head. Works perfectly.

I will put up a photo of the key later, with a comparison shot of the original.

I discovered this because I had bought a key blank from Suzuki that had not been cut and programmed.
When attempting to get the key cut at Mr Minute, they informed me of their key option: $125.

it's not cheap but the alternative is: buy a $70 blank, get it cut at an engraver (they can't programme the Suzuki blanks which was unfortunate) then take it to a Suzuki dealer to program. Lot of fucking around.

And to answer an old question: if you put an un-programmed Suzuki key in the ignition and try to start it, the engine will turn over indefinitely but never start.

Another (although not ideal) option, is the access the ECU and turn off the immobiliser.

Not sure how easy / do-able this is on a 14, I know it can be done on some other bikes. Im currently dealing with a mechanic who seems very clued up on ECU's so will ask him.

Just make sure you let you're insurance company know you're disconnecting your immobiliser: I know my insurance was cheaper when I selected I had an immobiliser as a security option.
