Right this is my first post so sorry if this is in the wrong area, just seemed like my best bet.
I have a problem with my 14 and I will just run though all the symptoms to see if anyone has any ideas or can help, any help would be appreciated
I started my bike and started first time no problems, nothing out of the ordinary so far. Off my drive and starting riding out, within 100 meters my the needles on my clocks started going up and down (similar to when you first turn the key in the ignition) and there was a slight splutter and rev drop (not sure if these are connected)
I continued riding and while it done this and after about 10 cycles of the needles going up and down my clocks went back to normal.
I've then pulled into a petrol station and filled up, put the key in, all lights on everything ready to go, and when I hit the start button I heard a click and everything went dead, there was no crank of the starter, just a click and no more power. No lights, no clocks, no turnover, nothing.
I tried fiddling with wires to try and find a loose connection, reinserted my key about 100 times futilely praying that would work and alas no joy. Then began the half a mile push home.
If anyone has any idea what it could be, or suggestions, please let me know I have only a limited idea about electrics, but if it is something I can fix myself to save some money I will do it!
Thanks in advance!
Gidday Slim, that clock sweeping leads me to think battery connection. If your connections on the battery are sound, check the earth connections to the bike. Major power cut out somewhere in the system. You didn't say how many miles it's done, could be the genny nut.
Hey there, It's done twenty 28k and it's an 05 model. Not to sound like an idiot but where would I find the earth connections?
There's an earth strap onto the engine, have a look at the filler plug on the clutch cover, look inward, you'll see a rectangular box (the engine breather assy), on the back bolt, there is an earth strap, just check that for tightness.
I'm pretty sure there'll be one for the frame as well, but dunno where that one is.
Have you got a multimeter? How's the charging on it? How old is the battery? Could be the original battery still in there - they've been known to go that long.
Take a multimeter. What is the battery voltage? How much does it drop when you try to start? Is there differense betveen battery -pole and engine when you ty to start? The same thing on + pole side, and so on....
When you finally get it running, check the charging voltage from battery poles.
You will find it. Its not rocket science.
I agree about the battery connections. Check those. It could also be that the sheathing on a wire has worn through and earthed out. Check the loom that runs from the headlight bowl under the tank where it runs to the side of the headstock - coming out of the back of the headlight bowl and that area by the headstock are known areas where this can happen..
The loud click and everything being dead could be your main fuse, going. Check the fuses in the fuse box under the LH side cover.
One other wire to check is the fuel pump wire which runs out of the back of the tank over the top of the air filter (the one you have to unclip fir removing the tank).
Also whilst you have the LH side cover off, do take the big grey plug apart and squirt with some contact cleaner.
Let us know how you get on
All i Can add it some great advice already is check the small earth wire from the battery terminal to the loom it's contacted to the main battery earth wire as I had a problem with this a few years ago .
Good luck and let us know how you get on .
Mate, get out multimeter, start at battery. Next, batt positive to engine/frame. Really hard to advise, wish i was there. You just have to find where power has gone missing, just trace thru with meter, they tell the story. When checking leave bike turned on, this creates a load. Bad connections hide without load. Youll find it.
Where are you Slim, if your close I can pop round and give you a hand.
Thanks for all the advice guys! Ill have a crack at it today and keep you all updated!
I live in Liverpool MJGT, bit far from somerset but thank you anyway!
I had the exact same problem after I bought the 14.
Loose battery.

Right, sorry for the long wait!
Update time, I tested everything and found no problems with the wiring, so I took apart every connector and cleaned them all and wd40ed for good measure. What ever the problem is it as (Fingers crossed) been sorted.
Thanks everyone for your help and hopefully I wont have to reply to this again with, well that didn't work,
Cheers!
