49 dead... and probably in the last place on earth you would imagine this happening. It really makes me wonder what the hell this world is coming to.....

Yeah it's fucked up alright.

Standby for GCA (Gun Control Australia) to start exploiting this before the bodies are even cold. It's their usual pattern.

They'll probably wheel John Howard out again to say how everyone should have listened to him.

This attack was FAR more than just a Port Arthur type event. It was a highly organised attack, with guns and bombs. If the latter had gone off we'd probably be looking at a much higher count....

Thoughts are with out Kiwi Cousins.

Yesterday afternoon was a bit surreal really.  Even later at night watching the coverage on TV, didn't really sink in that this is us, here, even though I was embroiled in the final arrest / stopping of the gunmans car.  The enormity of what's happened (here) is going to change everything.

My being caught up in things was this -
Friday afternoon, I'm driving from 1 side of the city to the other to do an urgent pick up for work. Friday traffic is busy.  I'm travelling along Brougham st, (it's an expressway / corridor skirting the city centre) & just coming to a set of lights that are red going quite slow, next thing there's a gold Subaru waggon come flying from the left lane & cuts in front of me, bloody hell I thought, never seen anyone drive like that, just eased back a tad, next thing he's up on the median strip with 2 wheels & overtaking cars that were slowing for the lights. I recall thinking, his back window is smashed & there appears to be a bullet hole in the front windscreen too - sort of centre to passengers side. I'm thinking to myself, with driving like that the cops won't be too far behind & I look in my left mirror & sure enough here they come. He then veers across 2 lanes & up onto the footpath & passes cars on the left. The half dozen or so cars are spreading for the police car, the Subaru tries to come back on the road, but the cops have caught up & T-Bone him right between the right doors. They've hit it hard enough to lift it onto 2 wheels & the 2 vehicles stay like that - wedged. The Subaru's front & back wheels keep spinning in mid air.  Passenger cop leaps out with a rifle & is onto the passenger side. She was all on!!   The lights had turned green & I thought, bugger this, I'm outa here. I can't assist when they've got guns.

Writing this out has taken longer than the actual event. Would have been over in about 60 - 90 seconds.  The ole heart was racing for quite some time after it I can tell ya.

Then, on the way back to work, traffic chaos everywhere as major roads closed. I finally wheedle my way through town side only to drive straight into the other shooting area in Linwood!

My thoughts & best wishes go out to all the families that have been ripped apart because of this.  They were just going about their business & got murdered!   I honestly don't see why the perp has the right to be still breathing.

Thoughts and prayers with our Kiwi friends. Having just recently visited Christchurch, one has to say it is a lovely community, so tragic that this has happened.

I really just do not understand what these maniacs think or hope to achieve. And to live stream it - unbelievable.

This is our haven where these things don't happen. My wife now sits in tears distraught that this has happened in our little country. I have no words.
Pleased you're safe Col.

My thoughts are with all our Kiwi cousins & so glad to hear you are ok Col, after being caught up in that.
To think these types of bloody maniacs are living amongst us and are capable of this, is sickening.

Very sad news and my thoughts are with our upside down friends ,family and the wider community over there.

It makes me wonder how this world  could make someone so disillusioned to do such a thing .
The people he attach had done him no harm and he didn't know them .
He just attacked them for the religion they followed.
A crazy mad world we live in

The pile of shit that did this had the correct gun licenses or so we are told.

And sadly this is the automatic knee-jerk "go to" for politicians.  I'm sure they'll wheel out John Howard soon...

Yeah he said he realised he might get killed but his intent was to survive. Presumably he thinks he is a hero to certain extremist elements in society. I suspect that most of that is in his head.
He cited as a hero that arsehole who shot up all those kids on an island in Norway.  :furious: :furious:

Death penalty? Indeed, but the lefties are against it because its cruel and obviously we don't want to be 'cruel' to this arse.
Yep we should definitely have it at least for cases like this.  Otherwise they just live on their notoriety in jail.
And we all know here in Aus and NZ that the jails (nor sentences) are anywhere near as serious as they are in the USA for example.  A holiday camp by comparison.

I reckon he'll plead  guilty but his lawyer will go for a mental state / diminished responsibility defence.

Well said Vlad. Paint him with honey, tie to a tree next to a green ant nest. Fitting punishment. Reckon that would be a week of pain before death.

"This is our New Zealand."

We rode to Auckland to spend the weekend with old friends.
So far removed from the NZ painted by a mass murderer that is being shown to the world.

Col, totally understand what you mean. Just gut wrenching. As an Aussie, was same feeling Port Arthur, Sydney Cafe, Hoddle St etc. Im always scared on big sporting event days, just takes one fuckwit.

A week since this happened.

Gun laws changing in one week. It took the killing of 50 people to make it happen.

The mate we were with last weekend has a firearms license. He told us the coppers rang his wife at her work and asked her to come home for an interview regarding her hubbys firearms license application. They walked around inside the house and interviewed her. She got home within 20 minutes and they were waiting outside.

Facebook have made no comment about their 17 minute live streaming of this terrible crime. Shameful.

I heard a fella on the radio saying he was sent the footage and thought it was a video game.......what on earth do people watch if the games are.that realistic.

Has been a sad week in NZ
Services being held for the victims today.
Kia kaha.

Fruit.... the response of all kiwis has been nothing short of commendable!   A real sense of community and politicians that have the balls to stand up and take action without prevarication.  Just a shame this is not being done in other countries (that remain nameless).

Without wanting to provoke any arguments with those who advocate public firearm ownership and use.... just a thought.... these weapons are designed to kill people, nothing more, nothing less.  I personally see no justification for anyone owning firearms.... just sayin.....
