Title: House Renovations & Projects big and small
Post by: VladTepes on Monday, 07 January 2019, 09:37 AM
A thread to show of any work you are doing around the house - be it major renos, a room, a deck, a shed or any little project.

I'll kick it off.

Let me preface this post by saying I'm no carpenter...

"A Tale of Two Letterboxes"

Some time ago (like a year or so) I gave away a fridge and freezer (perfectly working etc just surplus to requirements). The fella who came to collect them (for free, I add again) managed to run over our letterbox and break it, and high-tailed it. No offer to pay for it or even an apology or whatever. Plus the letterbox was a good metre or two from the edge of the driveway.....

Anyway, I had to rebury what was left of it with the now shortened/broken pole so it was somewhat sub-optimal as far as height was concerned. And that's the way it stayed.

We didn't want to replace it with 'just another boring letterbox same as all the others in the street' so we kept an eye out until we could find one more suitable. Finally we found one (no spoilers yet) which was designed to fit in a fence. We'd planned a fence but now that we no longer have crazy dog, there was no longer a need. Which left us with a box designed for a fence, no fence, and no way of attaching said letterbox to a pole.

So I went about designing a frame for it. But meanwhile the letterbox remained thus

Then while digging holes for the posts of the new letterbox frame, this happened and the postie had to deal with this for a while....

Many days and much effort involved and I got to this stage.
(It's not crooked that's just the angle of the photo)

Certainly a sense of accomplishment having done this.
Once the concrete had dried I removed the supports and have now backfilled with decent soil (after lining the edges with some plastic stuff to hopefully stop the invasive grass from, umm, invading.

Late yesterday we planted it up and I hope to have some photos of the finished result in the next few days for you !

Dear Sir.
It has been brought to the attention of the Council that under its current by-laws regarding letterbox placement. It appears you have placed the letterbox in question 75mm too close to the roadway. If you could please remedy this situation promptly so as not to incur litigation costs and penalties.
We await confirmation of letterbox resighting in a manner compliant with council by-laws.
Furthermore do you have consent to build the fence ?
Kind Regards
Knotta Phukkinklu (Ms)

Dear Ms Phukkinklu,

I have enclosed a copy of your original letter of the 7th instant.
I cordially invite you to roll it up and shove it as far up your arse as you can manage.

Kind regards,
Garn Getfarked (Mr).

My Brother and I built this the original house is inside the core!
The living room is my latest project - ripped out the old Jurassic fire place and built this modern mantel, more in keeping with the Tudor style.
Love wood working!
