Title: Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP).
Post by: Basil Brush on Friday, 04 January 2019, 05:45 AM
This is the only on-line forum I'm a member of, and in general most members on here are decent well adjusted helpful individuals.

I need to pick your collective brains, please...? On a non-bike matter.

Next door neighbour has a heating device located on his property. It's called a 'Samsung Smart Inverter". I presume it's an ASHP?

This contraption is the noisiest thing I have ever heard. It has been installed about 3 years now. Located on his property about 6 feet from a party fence, then our driveway then our home. a distance of about 14 feet. It runs approx 20 hours a day. The noise is heard in our living room (adjoining the drive). And all over our large garden. It's a pleasure to go outside when it's not running/humming away. A 6 feet fence is separating our property.

I bought a noise meter. Took several discrete readings. It hovers about 52-54db on full chat. The bloke is an absolute arsehole. We do not get along. The last time we spoke - I caught him spying/looking in my man cave. He got both barrels. You do not do this to me. That was about six months ago.

I contacted the council. They appeared as helpful as a fart in a spacesuit. And suggested I do my own homework - so I did.

I contacted one of the large on-line websites for these things. I got involved in an on-line chat. Making out I was interested in this heating systems. Turns out there is a limit of db42 one metre from a habitable window. Obviously 52-54 is slightly over. There is a tolerance of +5. When it reaches +10 it's an environmental issue. I've done loads of research online looking at forums etc. But, no first hand experience from chatting to anyone.

Has anyone experience good or bad with this type of heating systems?

The bloke as I said is an utter arsehole. He has the whole of his detached property to locate this thing. But, he choses to put it where it is. I'm gunning for him. Missus has tried to calm me down. Since retirement I'm about the home more now. this thing is starting to grate me big style...!!

Any help whatsoever would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks,

BB.

I used to repair a guys wheelchair who had a air heat pump system .
He was very happy with his system said it was much more efficient than his old gas boiler system and when I visited him it never seamed to noisy at all I nearly fitted a ground source heat pump but the cost and maintaince was too high at the time .the air source system was much more attractive but after close consideration we fitted solar panels as the returns were higher .
Hope this helps .
Having noise so close is not good if they aren't prepared to sort the problem is go round and disconnect it in the night .

Seth - thanks for that. I'm want to put a shovel through it. Or a very large screw driver in it to rip out the impeller blades. Or fill it with expanding foam. Missus on the other hand is more diplomatic. And as soon as I venture on his property - it would get nasty. Hence she wants me to through the environmental route - first off...!

Good luck with it then .
If the diplomatic route doesn't work a mishap could happen when your away on your holidays and nowhere near your home .
Friends are great like that  :onya:

I would suggest seeing how you stand legally Brian

https://legalservice.which.co.uk/which-legal-advice-neighbour/?rt=Neighbours&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhLTwltHS3wIVAVXTCh0qxA7REAAYAiAAEgJ6kPD_BwE

https://hoa.org.uk/advice/guides-for-homeowners/i-am-managing-2/how-should-i-deal-with-noisy-neighbours/

The above are just examples, try googling "legal advice noisy neighbours"

Hi Bill

Acoustic screening is all you have, a big bloody hedge. Might even shadow the buggers garden if your lucky.  :onya:

Thanks for all replies. Going to contact council.

Failing that. Holiday. And some expanded foam appled by a mate.  :boogie:

Sound / noise is often viewed incorrectly.

Folk think it's like a %.
They think if you have 100db and add 4 you have 104 (correct)
and that you have gone up 4% (incorrect).
db are measured in a logarithmic scale and even a few db gain can be a lot louder.

EG: I have a bike that came out of the factory at 90db.
It has new cans and has been retested at 94db.
The 4db gain is a lot louder than a 4.5% numerical figure suggests.

Pretty much right. The dB scale is logarithmic because human ears respond (roughly) that way. Every 10dB increase feels, to a human ear, approximately like a doubling of volume.

The 52 to 54dB we are talking about here is about equivalent to leaving near a road with light traffic on it. Personally I think the suggestion of growing a tall hedge is a good idea, it's probably the most likely to achieve a result.

Either that or bite the bullet and move house.

How long does a hedge take to grow in uk?

Not slightly, it's WELL over.

Bugger planting a hedge or moving, you don't have to put up with that.

3db is double, so if 42 is the limit that makes 52-54 16x louder.

I've been to Motorhead and AC/DC concerts and I think they where over 110db. Just turn the radio up and you won't hear it.

That type of noise is bloody annoying other people come to your house and say.....Oh i dont hear it much .... but its when the daily routine noises stop and you settle down thats when it gets bloody annoying !!!  :furious:
we have a quarry about a mile away ( apart from the bloody reverse beeping ) its not to bad !..... but every once in a while they use a pump to bring water from from a burn just below the quarry to replenish the wash plant , now i dont hear it in the day but when yo go to bed you just hear this constant humming which just drives you mad  :frustrated: and once you started to hear it it seems to get louder and louder even though its not ...... theres nothing worse !

Good thing you don't live in Australia at the moment, all the noise from all those Air Con condenser fans spinning with their blazing temperatures.

I can't hear my aircon unit as the doors and windows are normaly closed to keep the house nice and cool.

I think when I was in the UK it was louder listening to the Pom's moaning about the cold, wet and dark and not riding their bikes for months.

It doesn't work like that. 3dB is double the power, but your ears don't respond to power differences in a linear way. Very approximately it takes a 10dB difference to perceive that one noise is twice as loud as another. It gets more complicated because loudness is a subjective term and also it depends on the type of noise (frequency, repetition and so on).

But anyway back to the issue - according to my 5 minutes of Googling, you can install one of these heat pumps without planning permission under the rule of 'permitted development'. If you do that, it must meet a bunch of criteria - one of which is that the noise level has to be 42dB or less. So maybe the best way to tackle the problem is to put in a planning complaint.

BB sorry about your noise issue. I have issues with a neighbour. He invited an earthmoving contractor to fill a gully on his land. The contractor gleefully accepted his invitation. So now he has a 5 year consent to fill a 190,000 cu m. Add 50% for compaction then divide by 10 cu m to give an approximate number of truckloads to fill it. A truck goes in and the back out, then the bulldozer starts pushing the dirt around. I told council its a business, they said no, its an activity. I said its too loud they came and measured the noise. 48 constant with peaks up to 56 dba. Council says l'm lucky, he can go to 85. I love good news.
I do have a tree and a chainsaw. Am told early Sunday morning is a good time for making matchsticks
Good luck with.it.mate.....stay calm or you lose.

Wait, wait, wait, one presumes his heat pump pushes headed air from outside into his house.
Nice bucket of fish heads and frames placed next to your fence might get his attention.

Under bedroom window works well, also biffed under the house, which also has the added bonus of every neighbourhood cat hanging around.

I like the fish bodies (could of had some experience in using this method) but the expanding foam is a cracker!  Wait till it stops, bung a couple of cans in it n bugger off quick.

And that's where the problem starts Tony, the neighbour doesn't have a pump and his windows are open.
I installed a 3 phase 10KW unit in my place with two fans about 600mm each across, but I bought a unit with fans on top so it wouldn't blow the fence over.
I never even told the owner next door when I installed it.

I'm all for going to council. In fact my email is all done. What's holding me back is it might be classed as a dispute. The missus is not so keen. The bloke is an utter arsehole. My friend 'Karma' has now dealt him a very bad hand health wise. Very bad indeed. So much so he is restricted to drinking a litre of fluid a day. For the rest of his horrible life.  I have built a pyramid of empty Fosters cans on the windowsill in my conservatory. In his full view. Mrs Brush says I'm cruel. Karma is a wonderful thing...

We are getting some fencing contractors down tomorrow. We have a six foot fence with Yorkshire boarding. With 1 inch gaps. I'm looking at refencing with no gaps.

I invested in a leaf blower autumn. I had to google it to find the loudest... At 0901. I'm out most mornings.

I reckon the thing was installed by some cowboys. Unless he was told of the sound implications. And said bugger it? Oddly enough. In Scotland these things are not allowed within 100m of a neighbouring property. Says it all really.

And thanks yeah. I've become an expert on Db frequency. A jump from 42 to 54 is considerable. Especially when we live in a small village. With no ambient noise whatsoever. We were out the other night. It's audible six properties away...!

Don't worry. I'm on with it. I wish they did draw air in. I'd did look at the weather forecast for an easterly wind. To crank my log burner up (for all you lads in Australia you'd better google it) just to stink him out!!

The outside unit for my ducted air con is straight outside my bedroom window. It's quite loud, fortunately quiet some distance from the neighbours bedroom side of the house. Plus we don't run it often.

On the other hand that neighbours pool pump is right next to our bloody fence and makes loud annoying noises from around 8am til about 5 pm. Every day.  Which wouldn't be so bad except  my missus has been off work for 9+ months and has to put up with it.  We hardly ever see the neighbours, their house is like a fortress with electric gates etc. So I haven't had a chance to mention it to them.  Because it's during the day however it's not against noise regs UNLESS it's over a certain volume and it may or may not be.

As for dB's... @Basil Brush what did you use to measure the volume. If it was a mobile phone app, those are hopelessly inaccurate.
You'd need to use a properly calibrated professional meter to be accurate.

I'm aware of someone who had issues with fookwit neighbours so he started having a giggle to himself - now this behaviour is not big or clever and in no way condoned

one night after a run in with fookwit neighbours said someone crept outside into the neighbours garden and delicatly drew a stanley knife along the cables on the whirly gig (clothes drier) the next day the neighbours wife hung out a washing and as the neighbours wife finished hanging the last of the washing the lines mysteriously snapped dropping all of the washing to the ground - so when said someone came on from work there was the neighbour threading a new line onto the whirly gig - now said someone noticed the care and attention that was being put into the threading of this new YELLOW cable was almost perfect all 4 sides were equal length mmm said someone thought

Later that night said someone went outside wearing rubber gloves and with a cloth and a bottle of yellow food dye preceded to coat each line of the new yellow washing line in YELLOW food dye - next day neighbours wife hung out the washing - as said someone came in later that evening neighbour was changing the YELLOW cable over for a nice new white one

How said someone laughed . . . . . . . this is just one of the pranks that took place over the years - said someone no longer got angry with neighbours as he was having so much fun

I congratulate you on knowing 'someone' who performed these pranks. Don't worry - things are in hand. That machine has literally about half a dozen switches, buttons and junction boxes that are all crying out for some manipulation and adjustment.  :furious:

My neighbour with the dirt fill site is so paranoid about payback from his loving neighbours that he has installed security cameras.
When one of his lambs went missing he posted on facebook that his lamb had suspiciously disappeared. Poor thing was found dead in its water trough. The farmer of the year didnt know to put rocks in the trough so the little lambs can climb out if they fall in.
After that the Sud Efrikin gets a tree ripped out leaving a big hole in the ground. His missus turns up at another neighbours distraught because their cow is now cast in the bottom of the hole and she cant push or talk it back onto its feet. He goes down sticks his fingers in its nose twists its head over and gets timid mrs Sud Ef to push its leg over and up gets daisy !!
They didnt deserve his help, but the cow did.
