Title: Rear cowl off, frame clean
Post by: Grahamir on Wednesday, 02 January 2019, 06:41 AM
Just waiting for bits to arrive so thought 'rear cowl off and give the frame etc a bit of a clean'. Turned engine over on the signal generator nut, all good. Was dreading it if pots corroded as bad as the tank !! New plugs fitted, oil change tomorrow and if signal generator gasket turns up might fit the new battery and see what happens. Had a good look at re-chroming the fork stanchions as suggested, but decided to but new ones, cheaper than re-chroming :

Anyway, onwards and upwards eh?

Nice work, but I'm not sure how you figure that buying new stanchions is cheaper than rechroming.

From your link, the stanchions are £109 each to buy, or they will chrome your existing ones for £95. They will rechrome a pair for £180, definitely cheaper than buying a new pair at £218.

The standard Suzuki ones are really good and strong just not chromed enough.
So rechroming best of all worlds
Had mine rechromed 5 years ago and used the bike in winter while living 100ft from the north sea and they are still like new.

@Grahamir - I bought a set of these stantions a while ago and been no issues them and I ride all year

good idea stripping the panel work off as the rear ends tend to suffer from a bit of corrosion - again I did mine 2 years back just keep an eye on it now and touch up as needed

I have these stanchions as well. They are not as shiny as the originals which makes me believe that the statement in the ad is true:

QuoteManufactured in Italy, these replacement fork stanchions are made to the same specifications as the original equipment, with a reliable and corrosion resistant hard chrome finish – not soft 'show chrome' as is original on some motorcycle models.

Just had an email from www.allbikeengineering.co.uk/ , they'll supply a pair of stanchions for £200.00 including carriage. I know it appears that rechroming seems cheaper but by the time you've added courier costs plus the hassle of packing the things up, I reckon the costs are about the same. Bloody forks are doing my head in

don't know it this helps but I sold my old stations on eBay for £70.00 so made the cost of the new parts well worth it
