This time I agree with him, I refuse to remove my helmet when I buy petrol, I am complying with the law by wearing one, it's not a fashion statement.
wont work here mate.
I always take mine off.
It's required and it's not really a drama.
If I worked in the servo I wouldn't serve anyone who didn't.
I agree with Boris.
I think a burqa could hide anything from Yogi Bear to a suicide bomber.
I don't always take my helmet off in a servo. I do take my sunnys off and always make sure my hands are visible.
I would like to know where are all the wealthy muslim countries when the rag heads need a safe haven. Not very PC l know but l believe our cultures clash. Muslims don't even get on with other muslims.
.......Boris, Standard Mail and Fast Post goes in the same slot.
Time to be a bit provocative... Many petrol stations ask that you remove your helmet ...apparently for 'security' reasons.... what happens if you are wearing a niqab underneath (as is the right of a muslim woman). A philosophical question...as I would believe that none of you would actually wear one... I think :whistling:
Maybe you could say you're wearing this helmet and black balaclava because you burqa is in the wash. :whatever:
It is silly. I just wish servos had a window to outside so we could pay without ever having to go inside and therefore not have to remove helmet etc.
Re the refusal to serve... Any lawyers in the house? Interesting topic (at least for me )....as I understand it that's technically not possible under contract law when it comes to fuel. Normally, shops (and petrol stations) are 'offering to treat' ...in other words they offer you something for a price but are not contractually obliged at that point to sell it to you - even if you wanted it. So they can 'refuse to serve'. Works ok when the goods have been not been 'delivered' to the customer, but.... in the case of fuel you take delivery of the product directly so unless they want to lose the exchange value they have to 'serve' you. Doesn't apply of course if you want to buy something in the fuel shop tho... there they can say no.
Having said that... I agree with Tony...its no biggie taking of my helmet ...especially if it makes the guy/girl behind the counter feel safer!

Vlad - there are many servo's in Europe that allow you to either pay at the pump or in the shop... best of both worlds :onya:
It's their religion, it doesn't hurt anyone, I am more offended by Hawian shirts.
You start telling people what they can't wear, and it's the start of a very slippery slope. Perhaps George Orwell's book 1984 should be mandatory reading in all schools.
I don't necessarily disagree with BoJo - just how he phrased it, which was offensive however you may choose to look at it - and that's where the media storm has come from - how he said it, not what he said
As ever some sense in what he said as there is a problem in certain areas of the UK with fraud as they can't tell who is acctully under the clothing.
But as ever the way he says things is totally wrong yet again.

The bit that probably pisses me off the most is the number of people who jump on the headlines agreeing they should be banned. Don't bother reading the full article, just pick out the headline that sits with their prejudice. The article (regardless of brain-dead Bojos language) is actually an article on why the Burka should NOT be banned.

Dave... the voting public never cease to surprise me... and it seems to me that many UK MP's have very different priorities. I also think TM is heading for a fall. Anyone else in the frame for PM??
I always used to vote for the monster ravin loony party they proposed free road tax for motorcycles .
Only party that ever offered anything to bikers.
They weren't as loony as folk think but took the piss out of politics .

Burkas and such? Don't bother me at all as long as they are not worn in my presence :whistling:
A politicians life appears to be filled with stress, making sure to never answer a straight question, always omit the truth, telling you just what you want to hear in words that could easily be taken any number of ways so as to enable them an escape route should someone try to hold them to account, while spending all their time weasling a path towards re-election and hoping nobody finds out about their extramarital affairs and misdealings.
Its a minefeild out there.....no wonder they are paid so well.

Even a flip front helmet isn't good enough at some places they still want your helmet off weather it's flip front or not .

I detest Boris. I am prepared to believe there are some principled people who enter politics because they genuinely want to make the world a better place, but he certainly isn't one of them. He cares about only one thing, and that's himself.
The worst thing about his latest inflammatory nonsense is that I'm not even sure he believes it himself. I reckon he's just saying it to boost his standing with the reactionary old farts in his party.

There are those that hate bikers.
I tend to try and use the the pay at pump forcourts were ever posible !.... if some one has already said this ...sorry ..... im to lazy to read the hole thread :embarassed:
I don't mind removing my lid in petrol stations. It is a bit of extra hassle (especially because I sometimes wear glasses, so getting a lid on and off is a 2-step process), but I understand how scary it is to work in an environment where you could be robbed with violence. So if it makes people feel safer, fair enough I will go along with it.
By the way, the pay-at-pump option is convenient when it's available but I should mention what a biking friend of mine told me about the other day. Apparently a lot of the major fuel companies have released fuel payment apps that you can install on a smartphone. You just drive in, fire up the app (which stores your registration number I guess), then you can fill up and leave without going near the shop.
I haven't tried one of these apps yet myself but it does seem like a good idea. Here's a link to the Shell version: https://www.shell.co.uk/motorist/shell-fuels/fill-up-and-go.html
This is probably going to be very controversial :whistling: but i want to know why a woman pulling up for fuel is aloud to wear a berka (hood with a slot for eyes ) and i have to take my helmet off ?
Im going to claim that my crash helmet is part of my religion and it is an afront to my god ... Nitro ... to take it off :stir:
A friend of mine was made to remove his flip front helmet at a garage in a heavy rain storm he was already soaked so the last thing he wanted was to remove his gloves helmet before they would turn the pump on when questioned they said it's the company rules .
He made the same point about religious head coverings and was told that's different when he asked why they said they would call the police for him being aggressive.
He only wanted fuel and to be on his way .He left and managed to make the next fuel station where he was aloud to fill up with his helmet on but the front flipped up.
:furious:
The burqa isn't really a religious garment, it's more of a regional and/or cultural thing.
A crash helmet is an item of safety wear that would be useful for obscuring your face and protecting your head, for example if you were planning to rob a petrol station. Quite a difference really.
If you think there's something weird about a culture that covers up women's body parts without requiring men to do the same, ask your missus to go to the shops topless and see what sort of reaction you get.
If that thing (and related wear covering the face) is a regional/cultural thing than there shouldn't be a problem not to wear it where it is a regional/cultural thing to take issue with it. BTW, where I live there are many Moslems. Have only seen a woman once with face covered. She walked past my house. A few days later she walked passed again without that masquerade. She had adjusted quickly to that part of the new culture she lives in now.
"No shirt, no shoes, NO service" was a sign I saw on almost any store in the USA. I have yet to see any men (or woman :happy1: ) in any of the German stores I shop without wearing a top (or shoes). That is what US and German culture expect and it is followed.
Where it is expected to take my helmet off I do, easy thing to do.
There's an old saying that applies here, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
If you don't want to be like a 'Roman', don't go there.
Certain religions have their 'specific ways' & that's up to them, but if we (Christian based) folk, who drink beer & wine when they feel like it, eat pork etc when they feel like it, went to their country & started doing what we've always done, we'd probably just be shot, or at least jailed & flogged. We'd be outraged, but that's their rules & we chose to go there.

There are middle eastern countries that have Christian and Jewish populations living alongside Muslims, there's no requirement for the non-Muslim women there to wear coverings.
I have never felt threatened by someone wearing a burqa and I really don't care what people wear, it's up to them. As for "Christian based", I'm not one myself but as far as I know Jesus didn't mention any kind of clothing rules.
Hear hear Mr Fishfinger... the prophet Mohammed doesn't talk about clothing rules either (as far as I am aware.. )
Each to their own
Just to clear up any misconceptions about 'Christian Based folk' in the post earlier, it was just a term to identify persons not coming from Muslim countries. Merely pointing out the different rules people have to abide by in different countries. Visitors to those countries DO have to abide by that countries laws & standards. No drinking, no pork etc & women must dress 'modestly' or else.
Personally, I'm an Atheist, for me, there is no supreme being / entity, but that's just me. I certianly was not trying to include myself as belonging or adhering to any of the 'main stream' religous organisations popurlarly found in our collective countries.
Too late Col.......your hate speech has offended my sensitive self :whistling:

I am officially "Church of England" i think. Been that long since i thought about it and don't care, i could be wrong :smile2: and i don't care what anyone else is or what colour they are etc.
Think this started as a Security issue of why do we have to remove our helmets when some others are unrecognisable. I always do, but if we are not allowed to ask others to remove headwear for security reasons than we should also have the option to leave our helmets on.

That's the reason I refuse to remove my helmet, I am required by law to wear it. I have once told the manager of a station that if he was not happy serving me then syphon the petrol out and I will buy from someone else as he was discriminating against bikers, he took my money and I have never bought fuel from Tesco's since.
To ask me to remove my helmet but not ask someone to remove their burka IS discrimination.

I read the article and there was nothing to suggest the lady was a foreigner. The garage also said the garment was a hijab, not a burka, so her face would have been visible. And the biker had been using the place for 3 years without having to remove his lid, so it doesn't seem like an official policy, more like the actions of a single employee.
It's almost as if the Daily Mail is deliberately trying to stir something up to sell papers. Who'd have thought it?

I have lived there.
You are a man so you don't have much to worry about. .
That garment, in Saudi, is generally referred to as a thobe. No western men don't have to wear it but they are expected to wear trousers (not shorts) etc. They can wear a thobe if they want to, of course.
Western women don't have to wear the niqab (BoJo's "letterbox"), but they are expected to wear an abaya or at the very least a dress which covers everything including the ankles, and have their hair covered. Failure to do so may see them whipped, their legs spray painted or off to the watch house. This is done by the matawa (religious police). Yep it's that kind of place - they aren't big on tolerance.

Interesting insights, thanks. It was good to see in the news that women are finally being allowed to drive. The new guy in charge seems a lot more progressive than his predecessors, although things aren't going to change rapidly.
But yeah, the world could use a bit more tolerance.
