Title: Single seat options
Post by: barbz on Wednesday, 08 August 2018, 06:57 AM
Hi all,

First of many posts here.

I'm looking to register a k6 in Qld Australia as a single seat.

Laws here allow you to remove the rear pegs and take it in for sign off. One of the gotchas is the seat must be 500mm or less which isn't the case with the bike.

I've seen a few getting around as singles with OEM seats but I would like to do it right.

What are the best options here to achieve the shorter seat length?

I don't want to destroy the OEM seat should I want to convert it back down the track or to onsell it.

Thankyou

Welcome barbz

Hmm I don't know the answer to your question - probably needs one of your countrymen to advise I think.

You can get a cowl which fits over the rear of the seat - effectively making it a single seater - but whether that is acceptable I don't know (as it is readily removeable.

Something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-GSX1400-POWERBRONZE-SEAT-COWL-BLACK/183362519919?hash=item2ab142036f:g:j~wAAMXQDjhQ5swv

Thankyou

Would you know if that fits over the original seat or would need a single seat option to be installed/original cut down?

Thankyou

That cowl clips straight over the rear of the original seat - no cutting or other modifications needed.

Looking at the ebay listing, there are 2 pics of different cowls. The white one goes over the standard seat while the black one (the one that's sold there) requires a different seat. Just what I see :)

The black bike in the picture isn't a GSX1400. No idea why they have that picture there Andre.

All the Powerbronze ones for the GSX1400 - black or white - slip straight over the rear of the standard seat with no modification required.

You sound pretty clue'd up on it, i really should get around to doing mine, ive done my Busa and B-King but i already had the single seat cowls.

It's pretty much self assessed now.

Turn up and fill in the form and its done.

IF you have rego outstanding you can claim a refund, not from DoT but from your CTP provider.

They very very rarely actually inspect the bike, but if a cop gets the shits with you for not doing it right he could make life a little awkward.

I think I may have been the first person in Qld to do the new system (without a mod plate / engineer inspection) I was outside the door, first in Qld on the first day. I've done several.

The rego doesn't change, it's the CTP insurance that takes a huge drop.

One of the locals here had the cowl covered as part of the seat, its rock hard when you tap on it, but it looks like a re-shaped seat, like the old Eddie Lawson Rep Zeds and not like an add-on.

Is a single seater cheaper on insurance?  Some insurance companies here load it up as it's not standard, it's classed as a modification.

Here (Qld) your rego (road tax) includes CTP (Compulsory Third Party Insurance). Anyone with a suitable licence is insured to ride / drive anything with it's rego up to date. When a bike gets changed to single seat there is no pillion at risk.

Insurance is very strange
8n the past I've had discounts for not carrying a passenger and discounts for having the pillion option .
It never makes sense
Insurance prices never do
:frustrated:

The difference between single and dual seat rego here....

Once you have a single seat, the paperwork is free and easy to do, there's no inspection charge and you save £98 a year.

Yep.  As Tony said its now pretty much drama free.

The only time you'll ever potentially have a problem is if the cops stop you and you are carrying a pillion on a single seat rego bike.

The only time you WILL definitely have a problem is if you have an accident, carrying a pillion, and have a single seat rego bike. Don't be that guy.

Well the difference pays for the cowl for the first year, after that you are dollars in by looks of things  :onya:

@barbz - same auction for the white cowl is on eBay AU

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SUZUKI-GSX1400-POWERBRONZE-SEAT-COWL-WHITE/183341186572?epid=1942953648&hash=item2aaffc7e0c%3Am%3AmfWkkoHNObuwQQdczN85S5A&_sacat=0&_nkw=gsx1400+cowl&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR5.TRC2.A0.H0.Xgsx1400+cowl.TRS0

The auction is from Powerbronze themselves, so if you want a black one, suggest you pm them from eBay to see if they will do a black one for the same price.

Thankyou for the replies.

I'm doing the transfer paperwork tomorrow and rego is due. I'll single seat at the same time and order a cowl.

Run the risk of been pulled over for a long seat until the cowl arrives.

Anyone in Brisbane or Aus know a good painter? Would be nice to get the cowl painted blue.

Thankyou

I've heard good things about Buddha's motorcycle spray painting @ Underwood. No personal knowledge though.
