Title: What a crappy weekend . . !!
Post by: Speedy1959 on Monday, 23 July 2018, 04:14 AM
Can anything else go to plan?
After wrestling all weekend with my silencers I went for a spin to the lake District and back with a mate..
We stopped for a brew and there was a horrible smell of burning...
Then I saw smoke rising from the front of the engine..
Looks like my bloody radiator is leaking..
Its leaking from the lower left connector as you sit on the bike..
My bike has done 33,700 miles. Is this a bit early for this to pack in?

Suggestions please for where to get a decent replacement (NOT SUZUKI) that will fit straight on..
I really am NOT in the mood to start farting around with alternate hoses and fittings..
I dont need (or want) a race spec one.. Just one that doesn't leak !!

Can anything else go wrong !!

Not your weekend is it Simon. That's crap news about the radiator, perhaps check where it's actually leaking from as it may be just the connection / O ring at fault.

Good point Col..
I wonder if the O rings are available separately?..
Checked the 2 allen bolts weren't loose..
They were not...

It wasn't...

I bought a box of o rings for 20€, 3mm -22mm. Widely available (bought mine at an autojumble)

For sure they are - get mine in local bearing and seal/gasket store. Went there with one in my hand, and store staff find me what I need. Price was cheaper then Suzuki OEM, but quality should be better (hope so :) )

As I heard, lover left corner is a weak point of 114 oil cooler... Interesting - why?
Anyway, I have prepared for this, and recently get myself HEL cooler, what is waiting for it's time to be fitted.

Hope you solve your issues soon!

It's very rare for the o-rings to fail especially if they are not disturbed .
The lower journals are known to be suspect and fail sometimes .I've had 1 go on an oil cooler in the middle of Hanover,Germany.
£520 later and 2 days (German efficiency & Suzuki Europe's main stores being 50miles away near Hamburg airport)  I was back on the road to Denmark.
Mine failed due to me fitting aftermarket oil lines and i think the combination of heavier lines and tightening the oil-line fixing bolts weakened my oil cooler.

Thanks everyone for your input as usual..

In the end I decided to go for the cooler in the link below with modified flanges..
Yes its a bit more expensive but for peace of mind its worth it..

Thanks again.

Not a lot of help, but I will add to O-rings where the lower end of the hose joins the case should be easily available. I change mine regular as I remove the right hand hose fitting to get the filter out from behind the Yoshi Cyclone.

I normally pick up a few when I'm buying filters at my regular bike shop.

Just be aware Simon that (if ever needed) that with that oil cooler, the fan will not have an air intake (which as standard is over the top of the cooler) as they have put that flange across the top. Whilst many say the fan never cuts in, mine did occasionally in very slow moving traffic on 30C+ days one year.

Crap weekend here as well, storm & rain the whole time. Then I noticed the neighbour had a new Greenhouse, then I noticed we no longer did!
I figured the last Greenhouse was made of straw, this time I'm building one out of Sticks, I'm confident but I have this nagging doubt.

One is assuming I have a fan fitted !!
Not worried about the fan to be honest..
More bothered by the crap standard design that allows oil to escape..
Rather have a hot engine with oil than a cooler one without !

Thanks anyway Dave

The fan is only really any use when your not moving and it will fit with the aftermarket cooler and pass air over it when you are stopped if the bike gets hot enough .
I've only had the fan come on when slow filtering or stopped on very hot days in Europe.
The southern warm climate of the Blackpool area might bit warmer than Scotland but not to much

Yeah Speedy, prob ok for your climate. Have a look at Tonys post 33 1/3, thats Brisbane, just a tad cooler than here. 49 degrees just 3 yrs ago, a fan a necessity.

It's an issue but it is not a big deal. With that cooler (or the HEL) the fan will act on the radiator like with the OEM. You may get a little less air flow on the cylinder head. If you feel you want that extra flow, you can modify the mounting brace quite easily.

Ordered the oil cooler Monday morning via the phone and it arrived Tuesday lunchtime.
In my view thats brilliant service..
I phoned them back to say thanks for posting when you said you would..
He seemed surprised someone had bothered to give a verbal pat on the back !

Sign of the times I suppose.

Looks like the same oil cooler I've run for about 50k since my 2nd genuine one burst.

The flange across the top is a good thing as it stiffens the structure of the cooler & blocking air to the fan there isn't a problem. The fan is to suck air through the cooler when you don't have enough airflow from a moving bike, air sucked over the top of the cooler won't do anything to prevent overheating.

My thoughts exactly Hooli re airflow.
Car rads and watercooled bike rads have the fans behind the rads as you say..

with the fan removed there is a lot more airflow over the top of the engine anyway. :stir:

The fan on a 14 is 3/4s behind the oil cooler, it can't be lowered as the cylinder head is in the way.

I've never had an issue since fitting one of those coolers anyway & I've done a few* mile since then.
