Title: Fuel pump
Post by: Nick on Saturday, 21 July 2018, 05:39 PM
Bike been running a little rough since the winter lay off. Thought I would have a look at the fuel pump and filter. After stripping down and looking at the gunged up filter and pump thought the best thing to do was to fit new pump assembly. Still getting over the shock of the price. Found a pump by fuel performance, EFI pump direct replacement 64 quid. Has anyone used or got any info on these pumps. Thought I would check before I part with my cash. Thanks nick.

Haven't any experience of that myself Nick, however have a scroll through this thread as there are some other options which you may want to consider before deciding

Just an afterthought - what are your rough running symptoms? Could be other things than fuel pump, could be the tea bag filter needs changing, could be the injectors need cleaning .....

Have you tried running a couple of tanks of some of the higher octane fuels like BP Ultimate, She'll Optimate through, as these have extra detergents to keep the fuelling system clean. And they can help clean "dirty" fuel systems.

Just thinking if it's not fuel pump, it's an expensive way to find out by fitting a new one unnecessarily.

All stripped down and fuel pump is OK, tried it off the bike and its got plenty of go can't hold it back with finger over the hole. Just all filters full of crud. All clean now, blasted out with carb cleaner airline washing etc. Fitted all back together and tried it with petrol plenty of go. Just got todo the tank with vinegar and fit a pre filter on the low pressure side. All good I hope. Nick.

There should be a 'teabag' prefilter fitted that sits at the bottom of the pump assembly when installed.

Tea bag fitted and clean. Going to fit a in line fuel filter between tank and pump because of the rust in the tank. Will keep my eye on it and change it regularly till I am sure the tank is clean. Nick.

Where are you going to fit that? I can't think of anywhere to install it as the teabag feeds straight into the pump.

Wouldn't it be better to treat the rust & maybe line the tank to solve the issue?

Cheers @Andre
I now recommend doing this to all bikes with a gravity fed fuel pump ie most big suzuki's.
But your also right @Hooli
Rather than treat the problem it's better to remove the problem and clean out the tank and treat the rush.
My inline filter mod is to help the teabag filter not replace it ,it will give an early warning of how much crud is getting to the teabag in the first place.

I'd not seen that thread.

I can only see that filter helping when accelerating as the inertia of the fuel sloshing to the back of the tank  will push fuel through that filter into the swirl pot around the teabag. Running at a steady speed I'd not expect any flow via that pipe as the swirl pot would be refilled from above by gravity.

Out of interest, does it catch much in use?

The fuel take off from the lowest point in the tank is purely gravity fed to the pump
It being only slightly higher than the teabag pot on the fuel pump.
It catches any larger particles from the fuel tank .
Saves any larger particles from reaching the teabag .
I've not used the bikes much since fitting them the red and black most and it's not looking to bad .The mini filter was only £2 so if I see it dirty just change it and clean the teabag every winter .

Cleaning tank with white vinegar as per post on this site. I am open to any other ideas as to how to treat the tank to stop the rust. It appears to be the modern petrol is part of the problem. Thanks nick.
