Title: Audio books / talking books ?
Post by: Tony Nitrous on Friday, 13 July 2018, 04:40 PM
Although I no longer cover the huge distances I used to at work, I often commute 8 hours a week or more in the Ute, and maybe 4 or 5 on a weekend house hunting, plus I don't mind traveling a bit if I'm selling or buying if the price is right.

I'm a bit over the radio and my ITunes collection has been done to death.
I thought I'd give talking books / audio books a go.

Anyone else ?

So far on CD I had played....

# Excepts from Monty Python The Meaning of life.

# Excepts from Monty Python Life of Brian.

# Joules Verne Around the World in 80 Days.

# Joules Verne 20,000 Leauges under the sea.

# Aliens in the Mind (Vincent Price and Peter Cushing)

# The Hound of the Baskervilles.

# The Day of the Triffids.

I like the "old stuff" byway and was given these on CD's.

Using iBooks on my phone I've just downloaded the Stephen Fry version of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy so that should see me through a chunk of next week.

Anyone else ?
Any recommendations for books or podcasts ?

How about a language one Tony?  Listen & learn a new language while you're riding or driving?

I'm just glad of the quiet myself, very rarely ever turn on the radio in the car.  Allows me time to think my own thoughts and not what some DJ wants to tell me or have me listen to.

I find it makes my commuting much more bearable. The time and distance actually seems a lot less listening to a good story. It works for me.

I had thought about a language one, but not sure which.
Most places I go are pretty westernised but it wouldn't hurt.
Im off to Cambodia in a few weeks so that might be an idea.

Yeah, your distances are MUCH longer than ours, I can understand your take on that.  We'd only get about be 3-4 hours, you guys could go a whole day or more.

I had a customer who had a yard in Brisbane, but a lot of work in Roma and Chinchilla, I used to take vehicles out and bring another back, regular 1000k days. He had work in Rockhampton, I used to take vehicles up after work, a 600k drive at night, and get the first flight back the next morning.

Fortunately I'm now only about 30k's from home, now I just suffer Brisbane traffic (until I can sell this house!)

I do enjoy distance runs.
Cars or bikes, I love it, up to Cairns, down the Sydney, Canberra, Bathurst, Dubbo or Albury, love watching the numbers click over and the scenery change. It's my happy place, my escape.

I too like just the driving or riding.  I don't have to have a specific town or time in mind, I just like 'going'  When I haven't been anywhere for a while, I just get the urge to 'go' somewhere, not for any reason, but just 'go'.   Must have a bit of Abbo in me.  Go walkabout.  Are ya allowed to say that these days? dunno.

Reckon Aussie would suit me plenty!  Lots of places to just 'go' to, for hours & hours & days & days.

We area into it big time. Got an 'Audible' subscription.  So much awesome stuff there.  Audiobooks are fantastic.

Wouldn't recommend them while riding though - too distracting (as is radio etc IMHO) but in a car I reckon its fine.
Or just kicking around at home listening to a book rather than watching the shite on TV.

I listen to many stories / audio books at work.
I highly recommend the Harry Hole (pronounced Hoola) by Jo Nesbo..
They are VERY long stories and brilliant to get your teeth into..
I have them all..
