Hi,
I'm gonna need a fly screen for long treks. Wondering what folk think is the best fly screen for the job.
Some of the characteristics I'm looking for:
* Get a moderate level of wind protection
* Contradicting my first point, I am not keen on the screen being too tall
* Not too fancy - not keen on the ones with several humps or ridges
* Something that does not detract from the classic naked look of the bike.
* Colour is important, I think a very light tint is the best look?
Interested what other folk think?
I think its an all or nothing.
I fitted a large screen to mind. Screwed the look of the bike but did keep the direct cold air off me in winter so - swings & roundabouts. Came off as soon as it warmed up again.
The small ones either
a) still direct air at your body, just higher, or
b) direct the air straight at your helmet potentially increasing fatigue.
Or so I reckon.
I second that Vlad. I have a small puig one, which i don't use for that reason and also have a large one that came with the bike, but don't use that because of the look.
Basically, the bike looks far better naked to me, so i will put up with it. I am also really tough :jack: all 80 kgs of me
Might not be so tough if i was living in the UK though ;)
Hmm ok.
So with that in mind, any recommendations? What height would give me sufficient wind protection?
If the screen does have to be a larger one, it would be important that it's easily removed when cruising around locally.
This is the sort of design I had been looking at.
None of the ones I've seen are designed for easy/quick removal. They are designed to be solid and stable at speed.
How tall are ya Vonny?
The type & size of screen you need to do the job, is going to be dictated by how tall you are. Tall guy with small screen, wind is deflected at top half of the body / helmet area. Same screen with a shorter person (Notty) will be fine.
I have a different headlight & screen on my K6. It sends all the air directly at my helmet, very noisy, but my chest / torso area has no wind pressure on it. Makes for relaxing touring albeit noisey. Now if I was 5'8" or so, it would be going straight over the top, but I'm not, I'm 6'5", so just gotta wear it.
Same puig on mine. I am 6'7 tall and my helmet stays calm up to 150 km/h. I feel wind pressure only on shoulders above 100 km/h. My neck is now relaxed and for under 30€ I had nothing to lose. Turned out it is worth every cent!
I use the same but i bought one of these little adjustable flip screens and put it on top it works realy well , still gets the top of my head but its a lot quieter .
I'm about 5'10" so not too tall, It also stands to reason that when touring on the highway I would prob lean down somewhat compared to short distance cruising.

What I think ?
Why do you think you "need" a screen ?
The 14 isn't a high speed monster and at legal"ish" speeds a naked bike is hardly a drama.
There are some great faired bikes, I've had ZZR1100, Hayabusa's etc but I can't see the 14 needs one, although to be fair I don't do more than 945k (580 mile) days or 1100 mile weekends, or run quicker than 10.3's on my naked bikes. ;)
(54, arthritis, 6 foot if it makes any difference)
old org they were called tupperware. buy a naked bike, keep it naked.
Screens are for girls :whistling:

And for tall girls who like to travel fast on 14 :hat:
Im mighty glad of that little screen when its blowing and peeing it down .... although i do find it tough to try and hide my hole body behind it
That fly-catcher came off right away when I brought her home. I had tried it on my first one. It did give me 5 km/h more top speed (which I don't care about). If I had a need for a screen, it would be a giant one like on Lawrie's. But I only ride when its dry and warm :boogie2:

Exactly that.
I've ridden 14s with screens & on every occasion it was more comfy on mine that is properly naked as screens just concentrate the turbulence on your head n shoulders making it more uncomfy.
Hmm, im detecting a majority of folk are against a flyscreen, either due to the "look" or because of the wind being directed towards the helmet.
If I was cruising within perhaps a 50 mile radius of my home I would agree, but if I am off trekking (especially with folk who have bikes with fairing) I would find sustained riding at high(ish) speed very tiring, to the point of not being an enjoyable experience.
Surely in this circumstance and a flyscreen would be more justified??
Well, horses for courses, I like mine for touring, even though it deflects the wind blast straight at me helmet & make it noisey, the rest of me is in a nice 'wind free' zone, which makes for more comfortable distance touring, for me anyhow.
I have a std version as well, I've done back to back comparisons on same day over same roads & same speed. The full naked felt better to me through the twisties & at sedate to moderate speed. However, at overtaking speed & higher cruising speed, the wee faring has it all over the naked. I can hit 160k (100mph in old money) & not feel like I'm having to hang on for fear of being blown off the back - remember, I'm tallish, so I do catch a lot of wind. It's actually comfortable at that speed & the only reason to slow down is to preserve the continued possession of ones license. Doing the same speed on the naked is a whole different ball game.
For me, it works, for others, it doesn't. Buy one, give it a crack & if ya don't like it, flick it on, there'll always be someone else will want it.
i prefer the wind pressure compared to turbulence. riding behind flat back vehicles, drives me crazy. the worst, you all mustve experienced, a trailer loaded with mowers, tools etc, turbulence is terrible. concretors trailers, boards on top, mixers etc under, they are the worst. maybe cattle trucks are worse, turbulence and cows pissing at you.
I'm with grog here.
I find it easier to ride distance without the flyscreen as the airflow is smoother, that's more comfy for me. It differs for others, so do what feels better for you. Oh & paint it primer, those are slower anyway ;)
I am with Hooli and Grog - no screen keeps my speed just below 3 figures :) well most of the time ! :smile2:

Yeah, well, that's the flip side I guess. Because it's easy & comfortable to 'go fast', I would agree I probably 'go fast' on a more frequent basis than is prudent in reality. Maybe I should take it off & keep the speed down a bit. Mind you, it's parked up in the shed & hardly getting out at all at the moment - being winter n all.
No screen never slowed me down, it just made the same speed more comfy. I found it less comfy with a screen because of where the turbulence goes.
love it Tony.

Yep I generally keep mine below 4 figures too :mwink:
If I don't need one on my Hayabusa or B-King to do speed or distance, I certainly don't need one on a GSX1400!
