Title: Clutch and brake levers
Post by: Aldi on Sunday, 24 June 2018, 04:50 AM
Looking at new levers, any recommendations appreciated.

Looking at black or alloy, short lever ideally.  I see a ton of unbranded Chinese levers available which look nice from a distance but for something safety critical these make me nervous.

Not sure on budget but interested to hear what you guys have / recommend

Cheers
Al

Look at Bad Dog levers - have them on my triumph and they are very good. Sports Bike Shop do them.

If you want the ultimate lever though you can't beat Pazzo levers. But they come at a price.

I had a set of cheaper leavers could have been from the far east good quality and anodizing the only slight problem was the clutch switch didn't work properly I glued a small piece of plastic to the leaver and they were faultless for years till I got a set of pazzo leavers from a gut on the old org.

not understanding , what is wrong with standard levers. not something that has ever bothered me. old, slow, missing something?

What Seth said :onya:

Nothing wrong quality wise with Chinese levers I fitted apart from the clutch switch not operating on span setting "1" without a small mod.

I got these cheap from a GSX14 member on Facebook for £20. Quality is also good and clutch switch works fine. The shorty levers did take a while to get used to though compared to the full length items.

Nothing wrong with them Grog,  but they don't have the range of adjustment that dog leg levers do, and (for me at least) I find dog leg levers much easier to use - I find I can get much more control than with standard levers as the lever you pull is more aligned to the handlebar rather than being at an angle like the standard levers are.

Nothing wrong with standard levers, but the bike has short blue anodised from purchase and I'd rather go for a black or silver look.  Turns out I like the short levers as it takes pressure off my little finger left hand where I broke the knuckle a year ago.

Plus short levers clearly make the bike faster  :imrgreen:

Thanks for the feedback guys, seems my concerns on Chinese 'parallel' imports are unfounded. I used to dabble in importing from China for an ebay shop (fishing tackle) and quality was often dubious, I'd generally factor in binning 5% of stuff on arrival, and another 5% with quality issues on closer inspection.

The Pazzo levers look nice, and could pass the "only cost £30 love" doorstep challenge  :whistling:

With the bad dog and Chinese stuff looking almost equally as nice I'll probably opt for the cheaper route. Making a few tweaks to the bike, I'll get photos up in the next couple of weeks  :onya:

I had Titax short levers on mine untill I changed to Brembo masters. Altho the Titax levers were short, I still shortened them as I usually use only 2 fingers to clutch or brake.

With the Brembo masters I ordered short levers too and withthe brake the lenght aint issue as the lever doesnt come to the bar, but my friend nearly had a stroke as I took a hack saw and cut the clucth side shorter - hated it as the lever pinched my ring finger and little finger between the bar and the lever. Much better now :D

Some mates have used Chinese levers with no drama's.

Others have had issues with starting due to the clutch switch, brakes dragging and heating, anodising fading and cheap shitty bolts working lose.

They really are a mixed bag. You can't ask if a car is good or bad without knowing who and where it was built and to what standard. Cheap / Chinese tells you very little.

I rarely change mine, but if I do, PAZZO.

The levers I bought off ebay were a straight swap, no fettling or drama involved, really pleased with them  :onya:

Tried to upload photos but that seemingly does involve fettling and drama  :frustrated:

Does the clutch lever operate the clutch switch on all span settings?
Had a problem with one a few years ago and had to modify it slightly to get it to work on setting one.

I have short TITAX , which I got used on local forum.
Braking with 2 fingers (with 6 and 4 pots calipers), using clutch mostly with 3 fingers, but it also possible to use with only 2. Never regret I have them.

Mine were listed as SV1000 levers, so if you are looking any options, consider also other Suzuki models:

if i remember correct . the ones on the bike when i got it had 6 adjustments and the cheap chinese jobs only had 4  , i went back to 6 as i found the 4 position versions did not adjust to the right place for me.

I have a pair of Prezzo leavers
The just feel much more comfy than standard .
Emma has standard leavers but I modified the clutch leaver by fitting a 600 bandit adjuster and modifying the leave so it's more comfy for her shorter hand span as minimum on standard leavers were a bit of a stretch.

For me - because dog leg levers have more adjustment, also I find that dog leg levers give me much more control over braking pressure than standard levers

My bike came with the tasteless "Tarts Handbag Edition" Gold Pazzo's levers
I like the adjustment, size, use and feel but they are offensive to my eyes and have a little road rash damage.

So on went my spare Gen-1 Busa levers.

Just for my own entertainment and inquisitive mind I had a look at the cheap Chinese levers for the GSX1400.

What could ever go wrong with $21.60c (£12.04p) a pair levers ?
(Pazzo's are REAL nice but anything up to $240 to $299 a pair)

I spent a couple of minutes checking them over.
Tightened up a couple of the slack bolts, added a some thread lock and a dab of grease.
They fitted fine.  Clutch and brake light switches work fine.

# Im not putting a link up to the seller until I've tested them properly on a good ride.

# Funny, I'd probably still buy Pazzo's for my H2 or B-King, but not my Black Rat 14.

You don't need to buy 'em Tony, you've already got 'em.  Paint 'em black & pretend they're cheap chinese copies, you'll never know the difference.   :happy1: :stir:

I'd still know they were just Pazzo's and not genuine $21 Chinese levers.
Pazzo's are very hard to de-anodise, I've tried !
At least now I can do a proper comparison between the 3.

Having done several hundred K's this week and given them a lot of use,
I have no issues with my $21.60c / £12.14p a pair Chinese levers.
I was expecting crap, but although they aren't Pazzo standards they work fine.

I'd have to agree that Pazzo just feel better, a lot more adjustment. Set and forget.

No change in colour of anodizing after many years of use.  :onya: :onya: :onya:

All this talk about levers but how many of you carry a spare set under your seat? I have for the last 18 years unused & I hope it stays that way.

BTW, I'm with you Grog & wonder why.

I carry 1 pair if standard leavers under the seat .
Never needed them but I bet the day I take them out I'll need then.

I think carrying a spare set under the seat is a good idea, cheap insurance you hope you never need. So, I just ordered a set of Chinese ones to do just that. Got the long version in black, think about NZD$30.00

Never had stock GSX1400 levers, or I would possibly have left them alone.

Had tasteless pikey gold Pazzo's with damage,
then Busa levers that went back onto a Busa.
If stock levers were $20 delivered to my door I'd be tempted.

My ex-Mrs dropped her SV a couple of times.
I saved the best two levers that only had the ends snapped off and put them under her seat.

I remember back in the day we used to carry or fitted a spare clutch cable particularily on a tour like Europe.
Anyone got a spare hydraulic kit under the seat.

Back in the day i worked as mechanic for driving school. They were forever falling off my bikes, had a fleet of 12. Clutch/ brake lever fix, i drilled holes in broken bits, put brass welding rods in. Used car bog to join. Filed them down, re painted. Perfect job. Did lots of them.

My KDX250 was an ex-enduro competition bike, with a nut job ex-owner.

It came with a spare cable taped onto the original with the ends ready to be swapped over, I thought that was a bit OTT. It also had tubes that were like long sausages and had ends to them, the tubes could be changed with the wheels in place.
