Title: 24 litre tank mod
Post by: grog on Thursday, 14 June 2018, 07:06 PM
did this a while back, thanks Speedy. impressed with how fast i can fill her up. just had two warnings flashing, fitted 22 litres in. i reckon thats 23.5 in tank. around another 30ks tank range. unreal. my warning is, if you fill to top, only do when about to go at least 30/40ks before stopping/parking.20 to 25 miles in uk distance. otherwise extra will end up out overflow. ask me how i know.

Okay, I'll fall for it.  How do you know?

Just a re-cap on this mod, filled up today just after the last bar came on & the fuel symbol was there flashing.  Book says there's 6L left at this point (On K5 - K7) I got 20.21L in it, this is the 2nd time I've got 20L in at the first sign of the last bar.  Reckon I can get 26L in mine, so I can calculate fuel usage on max of 24L, giving me a range of 420 - 450k if I ride nice.  Otherwise it drops off to around 350 - 380k depending on how manic the throttle movement is.

So what's the right way to make said hole ?

Certainly one that doesn't leave metal shavings in your tank!

No.2 phillips, a decent whack with hammer. Job done.

I shoved a rag into the tank, and used a large bent nail to start it off, I put the bend in the nail, (the tiny breather hole is hard to get at with a screwdriver) then went medium Philips then large Philips screwdrivers.

Well done Tony..
I wodged some foam into the filler hole just in case I created a spark...
A very good mod that doesnt really do any harm.. (Even if I do say so myself).. :)

I normally get serious about fuel around 300ks.

Now I've done the mod for a while I thought I'd see how far I could stretch it.

Told the Mrs to keep here phone to hand and took my RACQ card just in case!

Filling the tank a fraction over my new hole punched in the neck (too far / high really but it was cool at 6am and I was about to hit the highway at 100kph) I didn't fill up again on this mornings run.

I just pulled into the drive with the last fuel bar on my KOSO dash flashing like crazy.

Trip metre says 381k's / 236 miles.

Some highway cruising but an equal amount of mountain and country roads.

380K is great Tony - I assume it was a fairly spirited ride (as usual for you!) and not an 'economy' run?   Just thinking if it was all normal highway riding, you'd easily get past 400k

It was pretty average.

On the longer open sections I was sitting at a bit over the 100k speed limit, but I did have a few revs on / lower gears around the twisty sections / mountains. I was a bit surprised, I was expecting 320 to 340, although I did over fill it a bit and was using premium 98 fuel that it's been mapped for.

Not sure it's 100% accurate but it's an improvement and I'm happy.

Filled mine last thursday. Reckon i had 3 litres left and 20.2 went in easily. Didnt try to brim it. Works well that trick.

Excellent mod... That was the ONLY frustrating thing about my bike, the amount of time spent at the fuel station trying to get as much in as possible [wish it was that way with the missus  :whistling:
]

It is a great mod because you know there is more room in the tank, it just takes so long to fill it. Have to say l was a little more brutal than l should have been. Didn't know about enlarging the breather hole. I just smacked a new one in......ooops !!

I haven't done the mod. I enjoy the time at the station - but then I am retired :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:

Old thread, but wondering how guys feel about this mod.

It's slow going toward the end but I regularly get a full 22 litres in if the second light has been on for a little, and get 360++ km to every tank. Have gotten over 400 a couple of times and a shade over 430km once on a straight highway run, but was running on fumes. I tend to do a lot of highway riding, and when I go in the hills I tend to maintain speed rather than accelerate and brake heavily.

My economy seems miles better than a lot of people, maybe it's just that I use the full 22lt every time.

I'll give this mod a look next time I have a few minutes to spare.

Hi Shifty,

It was I who originally put this mod on the forum..
The main advantage with the mod is that you can brim the tank MUCH faster..
With a standard tank you have to dribble the last 2 litres in because of the tiny pin hole breather thats at the most 1mm dia!

With a standard tank you can brim it but its a PIA as you wait for the level to drop then refill / repeat..

Because brimming a standard tank is such a pain, most riders dont brim it but stop just after the fuel reaches the level plate thats set about 1.5 inches down into the tank... This is where the tanks capacity is "officially" taken as its supposed to allow for fuel expansion on hot days..
So the "added capacity" comes from the fact that after the mod, the extra is much more readily available..

I only Brim mine if I am literally going out on a ride there and then!

Fuel consumption:
I too tend to get better fuel consumption than most guys do on here..
I regularly get 52 - 55mpg.
A couple of weeks ago I did a long 293 mile ride on my own and at my own pace and got 59.5mpg !!

Its a painless mod that no one but you will know about..
It doesn't scar or "disfigure" your bike

Go on....
Be Brave..
Take a risk..

:)

As I posted before....

381K's / 236 miles is the best I have ever seen from my 14 and it still had a little left.

My only gripe is that I can't do the same to the stupid B-King.

If I ever have another 14 I would be my day-1 mod.

My bike constantly averages 50 mpg, tank mod highly recod by me also. On a not too fast run can now get 440 ks. 270 miles. Great , cheap, easy mod. Your a winner Speedy.

Nothing special Speedy, just giving praise for a great mod. If everything was that easy , to make a difference i mean, life would be easy. Just thinking, for newbies as well as me, the first 3 mods you would make if you bought a stock 14. Maybe i should post this in different area. Thoughts gentlemen, a new heading ?

I like taking my time filling the tank to the rim. Not a PIA for me but an opportunity to practice Zen.  :smitten:

I'm just annoyed I filled my tank without thinking, when I was planning on cleaning filters and injectors.

Have to agree.  A great and very easy to do mod.

I don't ride much in town - too many "country town" car drivers who drive like there is no one else on the road.

So I ride mostly on weekends - easily get around 52-55 mpg all the time and that is two-up with the wife on the back and picnic lunch etc in the top box.  Use 95 Octane fuel.  Happy with that as it is a mix of open road highway and a lot of 30-80kph speed (for about an hour) when we get to the mountain range we ride through to the coast.
