Post by: VladTepes on Thursday, 31 May 2018, 02:54 PM
Show us ya... Watches !

Doesn't need to be a full story - just a pic and tell us what it is would be enough.

I'm a bit of a watch enthusiast, specifically Seiko (affordable means I can have more).

I started with a vintage model and have acquired a few more (mostly new) since then, I have a modest collection of around 15 now, which isn't too bad for two and a half years ...  :)

I'll kick off the thread with one of mine.

My first vintage watch - a Seiko Diamatic 6119-5410

I bought this, my first Seiko, via an ad on ebay but was able to visit the seller and check it out in person. Mistake, because I fell in love.

The crystal is near perfect and movement seemed to run well and keep time ok at least sitting on a desk.

The case could do with a polish at some point but perfectly wearable as is, and I kind of like the 'patina'.

I only paid AUD $100, which seemed like a great deal.

Then I wore it for a day and the time was all over the place. A trusted watchmaker had a look and found at least one culprit - a broken barrel jewel.  (The seller didn't wear it so I don't think he was aware of the issue).

Anyway in it went for a fix and service (which would have to have been done at some point anyway).

So it becomes a AUD$350 watch but fully serviced and 100% tickety-boo !

I love the look of it, and learned heap in the process.

....and not long afterwards I began my search for a Seiko chronograph. It would have to be a 6139 or 6138, and I prefer the twin register version.

I have a particular love for the Black/Red 'Speedtimer' style as, well, it matches my motorcycle just perfectly.

The cheese'n'kisses was not enamoured of the idea of me buying another watch (in fact, quite the opposite) but I made a deal - she held onto it until I saved the equivalent of the purchase price from giving up smoking.

Having found a suitable watch on ebay, I struck while the iron was lukewarm.

I picked up this late JDM Speedtimer. Manufactured April 1976.

It's in good condition and I reckon was a good buy. I ended up paying AUD$575 (approx. USD$440) which I'm very happy with.

It is functioning fine but will  need a service in due course. (and the service cost for a chronograph here is $350 which is a fair bit, but parts are getting quite hard to find and the people with the skills to work on them are getting thin on the ground too). I'll probably get that done in the next 12 months or so.

Anyway here's the pics !

Here's mine, Breitling chronograph.

Bought new as a 40th birthday present to myself, it literally never left my wrist for 13 years until my early retirement to France where upon I took it off and have not worn it since. (Took a while to remember where it was)

Funny though, it's  one of those things I could not see myself parting with.

I have a Seiko, in titanium, like this:
https://www.rubiconwatches.com/sqnp-v732-0p30-blu-seiko-gents-date-display-titanium-bracelet-watch-skg205p1 (https://www.rubiconwatches.com/sqnp-v732-0p30-blu-seiko-gents-date-display-titanium-bracelet-watch-skg205p1)

Had it for nearly 20 years, worn daily, replaced the battery every 4 and a bit years. Still going well despite a couple of scratches on the front glass (I never notice when this happens) and a couple of scratches on the back where the tool I use has slipped removing the back for a battery change.
Bought it because it's not as chunky as the chronograph I used briefly (why I thought I needed a stopwatch I've no idea!), and found too big to be comfy under bike gloves and jacket

Not a watch fanatic - for me those are just tools to show time.

But I have few, and they have to have some special features.
This is my favorite one - very simple and not expensive. But it's solar powered, so it means no battery change. Never!
Got it returned/refurbished from ebay in 2008 and they cost me less, then a bracelet I'm wearing them on :)

I have swim wearing them in ocean, I have been with them in finish sauna - no issues. wear them almost every day for the last 10 years.

I haven't had a watch in a couple of years.

We aren't allowed watches, rings, jewellery or belts at work and I just got used to not wearing a watch so stopped putting it on outside of work too.

I used to like the Old Skool traditional watches, hands and dial type. They used to last me a while then I went through a couple in quite short time, it took a while before I realised my watches falling apart or dieing quickly was exactly the same time I started riding a Harley. Funny, I lost s few screws out of my glasses too... LOL.

Then I went for the terrorists favourite, the F91W

I actually like the F91W.

Had a couple, stand up well in the rough and ready Earthworks / Civil / concreting trade. They normally end up scratched to f#ck and I break the straps but they keep going!

didnt know what a f91w was, turns out same as i had. brilliant watch. my latest is ice watch. 2 1/2 yrs, battery only replacement. worn 24/7. once bought seiko sq100, gun metal case n band. truly beautiful. nearly $500. band broke at 2 years. unavailable. was really pissed off, had to fit stainless band, not matching colour. wore it as work watch then. there after cheap was my option. no more seikos for me.

So...finally remembered to take a photo of my collection: just one...like the amount of dials on it. Nothing fell off, it is supposed to be like this.

You'll work it out. Just stare long enough at it

My protest to the smart watch

My Grandads gold Omega. It's broken at the moment. The winder button pulled off. I've been meaning to get it fixed for years now, but never quite got around to it. It was given to my Grandad as a "Thank you" for making someone a lot of money when he worked at the Bristol Stock Exchange! I'll never part with it.

I have just sent an email off to Watchguy..Many thanks for the info.

A couple of years ago someone on here was selling a beautiful Omega...Said I'd have it and he went and flogged it to someone else..I wasn't happy :furious:

PS...That's a nice collection of Omega's you've got there..

My Dad had a lovely 1950's Seamaster, but the house got burgled back in 1993 and it went walkies along with a lot of other valuable stuff. Dad bought it in New Zealand when he was there in the Merchant Navy.

Can't thank you enough for telling me about him. I've been meaning to get this repaired for so long now..It was the kick up the arse I needed to actually do something about it.
I really wanted it to go to someone who could be trusted and also knew what they were doing..Christian seems to be just the man.
I'll keep updated as I get progress reports via his blog on my watch.

I see you are quite fond of chronos - and most of those appear to be quartz?

Service cost of chronos (particularly automatic ones) here is $350 so just over half that = UK poundy things.

Expensive.

My Omega is now a "work in progress" with Watch Guy.
It's needs a fair bit of work, but it'll be worth it in the long run due to the value..At a rough estimate so far it's going to cost me approx £300.
Better to have it working though than just sat in a drawer doing nothing. I know my Grandfather and Mum would be pleased to see it being worn again.

This guy really seems to know his stuff when it comes to quality watches and repairing them.

Agree, he has got some skills.  When I was looking for someone to service my Speedmaster I was told by a couple of repairers that it would have to go back to Omega as it was very specialised work on that particular model, Christian said "no problem, have done a few with that movement".

Sadly it's a dying art - so few people entering the trade now and entry costs are HUGE if you want to work on Omega etc. They insist you have machines and equipment (and do courses) all of which will cost well north of $100,000.

Takes a while to earn that back....

A real shame.

Tony I can't see any pic from my work computer, so can't really comment on the watch itself.

The shortage of decent watchmakers here means they aren't cheap but without hesitation I would recommend Ian Head (Timecraft Services) if you wanted it looked at.

I'm actually rather excited this morning as my repaired Omega is on it's way back to me. Hopefully it'll arrive today :boogie:
The total bill came to £282. Not bad considering the amount of work and new parts required, some of which Christian had to hand make!

It's been quite an experience looking at the photo's Watch Guy posted up on his blog of the repair..Impressive stuff!
Omega parts certainly aren't cheap. For example the winder "Crown" needed replacing as I broke it many years ago due to the winder mechanism seizing up..
£28 for a replacement..It is 9ct gold though.

All in all..Brilliant service from Watch Guy!

I know full well that my late Grandfather, Grandmother and Mum would be very happy to see it repaired and being worn again. It'll only be worn for special occasions though due to it's value. I'd hate to lose it, or have it stolen.

Looks good.  Omega parts are hard to get hold of as the swatch group keep tight control of them and will only supply their own repairers, so you have to know a man who knows a man although dealers bought a lot of stock once the swatch group announced what they were going to do, just hope he still has some when my watch needs a service.

New addition to the watch collection. Tag Heuer Formula 1.
My Son saw it advertised on a selling group on Facebook. I went in with an offer £150 under the asking price and got lucky!
It's brand new, not worn with all the documentation and receipts.

The drawer one is the go.
I have one which hinges the upper level to get to the lower.
No good - the top watches move allover the place. Plus you can't look at them all at once !

In the documentary I posted about a couple of days ago. http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=4199.0 While in the diving bell you can see one of the divers wearing a watch similar to many of the watches seen here. Perhaps one of the Brits could have a look and identify it. An hour and a half to trawl through but I think it's definitely worth watching. It's been on TV on BBC Scotland but I dont think it has been shown nationally yet.

The chap in the diving bell was wearing an Omega Sea master Professional 300m, often called the James Bond watch.  I had one for 12 years and sold it last year to buy an Omega Planet Ocean 600m.  There is a picture of mine in one of my previous posts.

I ordered this Spirit of Concorde chronograph a few weeks ago from The Bradford Exchange. A bit disappointed as I've just had a letter saying that their stocks have run out, despite me pre ordering it...I won't now receive it until the end of July
It's cheap as watches go..Hopefully the quality will be up to standard otherwise they will be getting it back!

Darn, I cant seem to get away from watches, theyre everywhere (I guess I dont get to choose hobbies, they choose me)

e: uh-huh, and I thought that that messae didnt go anywhere as my phone just froze up... ....hella more pictures than I intended, sorry for that :D

Aaanyways, I kinda like watches. The first one in the pics is a Leijona (Finnish for Lion) 95th anniversary titanium I got from my grandfather when he passed. Nice and lite, goes with a suit pretty well.

In the second pic there's my go on the Fifty Five Fathoms mode that started as a Seiko SNZH60. I changed the dial, bezel ring, straps to look as the original with Hirsch butterfly and movement to a hacking and winding one. I just love how it turned out and the lume is just terrific (in the 4th pic) Next to it there's the missus Mikael Kors.

In the fourth pic from left, theres a Breitling Superocean Heritage 2, the allready mentioned Leijona, a Casio Edifice chrono that I buyed just because of the colors and my daily beater - Suunto X-Lander military. Man they make those Suuntos tough, it has survived over ten years of brutal use, couple tours in Afghanistan, several IED strikes, fishing and stuff...

Title: Re: Show us ya... Watches !
Post by: BlackAdder on Tuesday, 11 June 2019, 11:40 AM
The colours are just right :D

I just dont reeeeally like chronos as it's not that easy to figure out the seconds (like that would actually matter) if the seconds hand (as in this one) is on the smaller dials. In that sentence the divers are way easyer to use by just rotating the bezel on time and calculating from that. Bananas, banaenaes, I know...

But man, there's some fine timepieces in here as well...  ...now added to my car and turbobike fever, I've got a watchfever as well... ...again!

The Spirit of Concorde watch arrived yesterday. It's ok, but I wouldn't rave about it. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd actually got to handle it before the sale..It's quite lightweight..I like heavy watches.
I'll be keeping it though purely for it's rarity and collectability value.

@Speedy1959 they are good solid watches (I own 2)  and should you ever tire of the look there are probably more after-market parts from quality vendors/manufacturers available for the SKX line than for any other watch.

Wear it first before shelling out the money.
If you are after a replacement though, strapcode do make some great gear.

Both of my SKX's are currently on 'Bond' NATO straps, which I think suits them well.

Watch arrived early yesterday..
It looks and feels far better than I expected..
The original bracelet is very comfortable and in my opinion isnt as bad as I was led to believe..
As you say I shall live with it for a while as I certainly dont feel inclined to swap it just now..
Just goes to show you should treat YouTube as gospel..
