Title: Timing Retard Eliminator
Post by: nickygee11 on Thursday, 17 May 2018, 07:02 PM
Morning all, haven't really posted on here before with a serious query, so here goes.  My 14 is feeling just a tad lumpy around town so changed out the plugs which were in ok condition, but it wad due anyway.  Question is, had anyone fitted one of these and how did it pan out?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRE-GSX1400-TL1000-SV1000-GSXR-600-750-1000-HAYABUSA/170385346282?hash=item27abc20eea:g:lmsAAMXQUmFSn3po

I read some interesting articles on this whole concept but am wary of turning a minor niggle into a major issue

Cheers
Nick

Before anything make sure your tick over is correct at 1100rpm as that can upset low speed running.
Other things that help are removing the pair's system and a 4°ignition advancer rather than a tre.
I'm in the shire happy to help you .

I would check (and adjust if needed) TPS and STPS, and sync the throttle bodies first. You get more out of that than the TRE.

Instead of buying a TRE thingy, I changed the resistors for 1,2,3, and 4th gear to the same value as 5th gear. It does make a difference to me when adjusting throttle in the corners. Don't notice in the city though. Cost me a few cent for the resistors and a 10 € for the silicone sealant (needs to be Alcoxy-system type).

Why DIY? 1) Protection from prying eyes (a topic most relevant in my country). 2) I dislike extra cables, boxes. 3) I enjoy this work :)

The TRE in the link, as well as most others and my DIY, will preclude you from using most gear indicators. There is one type gear indicator that will work though (sensor gets mounted on the gear linkage system). There is also a TRE/gear indicator combo "GIpro ATRE G2" https://www.healtech-electronics.com/products/gipro/gpat/ (https://www.healtech-electronics.com/products/gipro/gpat/) Count on paying 4x more than the one in you link.

As for the claim of more HP - forget it. Someone dynoed the difference. It is there but insignificant.

The mod just brings the ignition advance and the injector timing back to normal. IMO, which differs from others here, you can still do the ignition advance mod (DIY as shown in this forum or bought option).

But again, do the checks/adjustments mentioned in the 1st sentence for best results. Then you can think of other mods.

Niccy, my way of setting up 14. Mine works perfectly, im very fussy. All those adjustments already mentioned are critical. Sec. throttles, tps, throttle cables to almost no play. Syncro butterflies. Chain adjust to specs. Get rid of pairs. Idle speed at exact 1100. She will ride so nice. I added the healtech gear indicator with atre. 4 or 5 yrs ago. Indicator i needed, kept looking for gear 7. The built in atre sure smooths out first 4 gears. I wouldnt fit mechanical  advancer, lots do. To my thinking it also advances 5&6 gear another 4, not something i wanted. Andre way is much cheaper, i just paid the bucks, no regrets. The initial checks/ adjusts cost nothing , just a bit of time. Youll be amazed. Such a flexible smooth bike.

:hat:  Thanks for the rapid feedback people.  Might have a tinker after I've had her out for the weekend.  Checking the idling speed will be getting done today....

The feed back on TRE's on 14's is a bit mixed. Some like them, some don't, some talk rubbish and don't seem to understand exactly what TRE's and ignition advancers do differently or have in common.

I've done a few on early Busa's to remove the speed limiters. On a Busa is just a 6.8ohm resister, if you can manage real basic mechanics / electrics a TRE should be costing you about 25 pence.

Ive just fitted the same one as in your post as im having the same issues along with a few others on here and there are plenty of numerous things that could cause the lumpy running !!
But in my case the TRE has defiantly helped its not perfect but its a hell of a lot better but im still in the proses of trying to find the root coause of it .... im begining to think its a gsx1400 flue bug ..... there's that many seem to be going down with it ! ???

Ok, so checked idling speed after it was really warmed up and was about 850 +/- so cranked it up to 1100 and seems to have made a difference.  Take it from ere...
