hi all, new here thought i might ask. i have a 03 k3 blue white 8,000 mile. just retired hoping to get out . however , a yr ago ,i had a pin hole leak in the fuel tank . i sealed that ,after this job i started to get an intermitent issue which seems fuel related , yesterday i took off just to try .it as you guys know pulls like a train and for a few min all smiles.... then its just like its running out of fuel or i forgot to turn fuel on.. almost but not actually cutting out . then it will pick up and go of like a train again , this happened several times, but i got home , any consensus on likely cause , plugs ,straw coloured occasionally back fires, but it goes like bloody rocket anytime the issue goes away .almost certain its to do with tank sealing efforts ,removed tank and pump cant see anything , thinking to change fuel pump .seen on fleabay just under 70 quid but happy to follow any other likely suggestions
Hello AJL welcome along. There are some real gurus on here who I am sure will be along to help. To me it sounds like fuel starvation, look through the "Tech tip" in the fuel forum on these pages and check out cleaning the teabag filter ( IN your fuel pump - I got that a bit wrong)
Might be nice for you to drop into the introductions page and tell us a little more -pickies are nice too
Nice to see someone else in France, which Dept. Are you in?
Welcome - Croeso -Tea Bag is my guess but you will get the experts replying :smile2:
ok guys cheers looking teabag over in the am.. is piccy posting easy ? if so will do that tomorrow. we are in normandy hr south of cherbourg , want to run bike dow to italy if its ok .

Hi AJL, welcome aboard. Your issue does sound fuel related & with sealing the tank previously also lends me to think it's your filters, one or the other or both. The fact you had a pin hole develop would indicate water / rust inside the tank, this crud gets sucked up by the fuel pump as it's in the lowest part of the tank, the smaller stuff get stuck in the high pressure filter whereas the bigger stuff gets trapped by the 'Teabag'. Easy to check the teabag filter & if that's blocked give it a good clean & also try a reverse flush on your HP filter - tech tips section detail how to do these. Or do the HP Filter bypass mod & never have trouble again with the hp side.
Cheers, hope you get it sorted quickly, being retired you'll have plenty of time then.
Sound advice col I'm sure that the problem too.
Follow the links ajl
and do as said hopefully all will be ok after.
Good luck
That sounds similar to my bike, pulls well when under power but stalls and runs crap at tick over. Next thing to try is fuel pump and filters.
did not get to teabag today , weather good so ran off on ducati for an hr or two . thinking on , i know teabag was clean as i had all that out to re seal tank ,what i dont know about is the high press side as i understand suzuki have ensured that that cant be serviced !! i found a new pump on flebay under 70 plus delivery . can anyone refer me to the high pressure mod. i would like to read about that. rain forcast for tomorrow if so tank off
on a related matter ,anyne know where i can get a replacement blue, white tank as i am not happy with resealed tank , its a bugger that .no facility to drain tank in winters ,properly,as far as i can see and tank otherwise completely unmarked . thanks guys for advise.i will keep an update if i resolve the matter.
@ajl I always keep the tank filled to the brim over winter so that no condensation can form causing rust..I NEVER drain the system down.
I ride mine all year round so for me the part of the bike with the least amount of water is inside the tank.

Same with my GSX1400, but the Bandit spends all winter in the shed :onya:
anyone had good results with fleabay fuel pumps i see one at around 70 and seemingly the same thing for less than 30
These fuel pumps do not include the high pressure fuel filter and pressure regulator which cost nearly 200 quid at Robinsons.
Here is the link to the high pressure filter mod: http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html (http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html)
The link to the forum post about the external fuel filter mod on our forum http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=590.0http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=590.0 (http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=590.0http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=590.0)
There is also a low pressure fuel filter mod to help out the tea bag: http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=2212.0 (http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=2212.0)
While you have the pump out, this would also be a good mod to do: http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=1610.0http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=1610.0 (http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=1610.0http://gsx1400owners.org/forum/index.php?topic=1610.0)
andre ,and others, thanks will proceed based on yr advise , if i can follow the instructions, thinking on it i am now sure the internal filter ,hp not teabag ,is the culprit , i cleaned the tea bag, its possible that the internal one dried out with crud in it whilst i had the pump out to seal tank . i will try reversing the pump to see what comes out . i also understand that another 600,750 ? suzuki pump is a direct fit ,am i correct ? thanks again ........
Yep more or less, just slightly smaller in size, so you need to swap the mounting plates. (As I recall from one of the threads)

Read
all entries of this thread then decide, as it gives options

(as above though you may need to swap the base plate depending on what you decide)
Just noticed that checking fuel pressure and fuel flow rate has not been mentioned. See the workshop manual in the download section on how to do these procedures. Should be the first thing and will give an objective pic. However, doing the mods without checking pressure/flow first does no harm as these are good mods, even if just as a preventive. Getting a new fuel pump is also a good thing. If it turns out that the old one was still ok you have a spare on hand, always good imo :)
ok guys .pump out. all in bits, nothing broke. cleaned all . teabag clean , got a fair amount of crap, nothing big.out of high pressure filter flushed several times and put compressor and petrol thru it . put all back .idle seems better and holds specific rpm well , no fluctuations noted compared with previously so off to try it soon ,back screwed right now so thats a tomorrow job ,i can never get the bitch onto centre stand !!!
whilst at it i noted area to drill for filter mod ,i will go back to that link and find the renault filter nu, i might get that here ,and the pipe, then i will ,ok or not plan that mod and bracket so i can hopefully forgetthis episode .
it seemed better , did not falter. i have seen the origional internal filter opened up ,it has a good sized filtering area, i am not confident that i will have improved things for any length of time .and am going to do the mod .anyone able to advise a place in the uk to order the external filter similar to the one on the site ,nicely mounted using the tank mounting bolts and a ss bracket ,which is the way i intend to go, dont use fleabay and having trouble seeing anything that fits the bill correctly ,here in france
well carried out mod as directed only issue metal filter MAN F135 too big to fit under tank in front of mounting plate it was best size i could find in town so its sitting in space above battery, in plastic tool tray.NOT IDEAL ,but should allow me to prove the point.or not. filter needs to be about bog roll diameter as that fits well then it needs 2x 90 % bends so pipe dont kink. anyone with link to good parts ? seems ok on stand will run up down road in the am ,its a bitch to push if it dies miles from home .dont know pressure flow as dont have guage but plenty press when i removed pipe to check....
mod done, bike fixed.. found filter bog roll tube size .picking up in uk next week mann wk68 currently fitted under seat. making bracket as in plan on mod . just 2x 90 bendsto resolve, when i see filter ends ... almost forgot how to ride bike 60 mile today no drama . the origional suzuki design is,frankly stupid.
