Hello Lads and Lass-esses !
Put the kettle on, this could be a long one !
Some of you will know I've not been on my GSX14 for some 2 years or so. Yes yes, I hear you all gasping.. frowning etc. It was mainly due to the fact that it was just feeling very tired (suspension) and the bigger reason was that as my biking needs & wants changed massively about 4 years ago. I've done many Tours into Europe and this is where my heart lays. I do very little UK riding nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I've Toured extensively on the GSX.. heck, I even rode it from Nice, France back to Cambridge in 24 hr non-stop. 1000 miles in 24 hrs. have a google and you're arse will hurt like mine did – took me 2 days to recover but it was a moment I'll never forget as the GSX performed brilliantly, it just hated the French piss poor 91ron fuel... anyway, I digress..
Doing the touring thing, I decided that I needed a "proper Tourer" as I like to do miles. Often I'll do 11 or 12 hour stints. Like Cambridge to Catalunya (incl going up the Pyraneese) in 1.5 days. So I bought a 2010 Kawasaki GTR1400. Affectionally called the Ballistic Sofa. Truly a potty fast mile eating machine. So, the GSX was relegated to sitting in the garage for a little over 2 years... not even under cover !! (more gasps) I'd toyed with selling the GSX but every time I went in the garage I got that "tilt of head to one side" and that smile you'll all recognise as you do it too !! Another decision not to sell was because it needed too much work on the front end and it would be worthless, wouldn't pass an MOT certainly ! and so it was left.. and left. The only time it has been out was June (I think) last year to a Bike show 8 miles away from where I live – and I won Best Streetfighter ! no bribes just a blind judge !
It became very clear that work was needed, LOTS. And I just didn't have the interest in the GSX as I couldn't see a use for it. I Tour, I have the GTR14. The GSX front Compression adjusters were just knackered and the bike had little to no suspension up-front. They would not "click" or adjust and when I tried to adjust I could see the O-Ring and oil seeping !!! it made the handling "interesting". The rear shocks also had the usual problems – yawn! And in general it was tired. So it got parked up and left. Can't sell, can't be arsed to mend. 2 years passed...
Well.. I've been busy, As it approaches being ready I feel it's time to share what's been going on in Stoli-land for the last 4+ months ! Some of you have a had a wee sneak-peek at my 2018 rebuild – as of course like a woman needing the OK on a dress.. I too needed the odd "nope, you look fat/ugly/stoopid/daft ...." So I could take in feedback, stand back and chose another direction.
So I'm going to start with a Pikkie of the Bike before starting. This was on it's last outing where I was snapped going into the Bike Show and the last time it was out plus a pikkie of it on the drive so you can see what I started with and hopefully if you've not dropped off yet.. you'll read on as I list the mods done and show fotos as it nears being ready once again.
Hopefully you'll bear with me as I'm quite proud of whats been done
Stoli...
Ready for the Tear-Down
Custom HEL Cooler - a LOT of Grief to get this done and to Fit due to Yoshi Headers. Its also been custom air brushed with the HEL Logo - looks Fab
Have fun Stoli :onya:
I hope the exhaust header bolts behave themselves for you ;)
Lots of bits removed and after many days that turned into weeks I finally chose the Colour I wanted... Blue Chrome powder coat.. this was a big leap of faith as I thought it might be overkill
Wanted to move away from polished Headers so.... Exhaust Wrap. I'm stunned by the look and how it came out. to me this just looks brilliant
Ohlins for the Rear and K-Tech for the front... yeah baby.. it'll handle now !!
And so to the rebuild... Blue Chrome parts going on and on the final stretches...
As a note, nearly all bolts have been replaced with Titanium or Stainless...
And so to the Rear... Quite pleased with how this looks. I think the Blue and Yellow goes very well... And I'm now thinking the Callipers need to be yellow up front to even it out a tad

Very nice Stoli, looks good now all assembled - but shame your rear axle is in the wrong way - the nut does up on the Sprocket side, not the brake side (sorry)

The more I think on the yellow callipers the more I'm inclined to do it.. but i'd have to then have the Ohlin's apart too as they'd have to match. I think i'd just do the Callipers 1st - see how it looks and move on from there..
its now about the finer detail which for me has to happen when its built and you stand back with a cuppa and scratch your chin in a knowingly fashion !!
Nah - save some pennies and get the guy to match (as best he can) the colour of the Ohlins.
or maybe try this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YELLOW-E-Tech-Brake-Caliper-Paint-Kit-Also-For-Drums-Car-ETECH-Engine-Bay/271700836509?hash=item3f42a1c09d:g:siYAAOSw0vBUhaOa
I've used eTech on my cars before, takes 2 coats but you get a good finish IMO (so long as they are clean to start with). At that price you could do it yourself Stoli......wouldn't take long. And from looking at the pictures, it looks a pretty close match to the Ohlins colour anyway.....

Yes. For now. But sadly he's a bit torn. I got a ripped sausage!!!
He's a Pepperami Fanimal. On the bike cos it's a bit of an animal!
Sadly might have to come off as he's ripped. Sad times.
We now have brakes!!!
My lovely brake lever that cost MANY 30 quids is on. GSXR master cylinder and billet reservoir, SV1000 callipers fully serviced and new HH Pads.
The lever itself if fully adjustable for Span
Flips up in case of an off
Has a sap off end to save the lever
And best of all is completely adjustable for brake pressure.
Bike comes home to me this morning for final bits to be added then it's MOT. Hopefully next Sat
few more pikkies from the weekend . its getting there !!! Waiting for new heel plates and foot rests.. oh and the yellow calliper paint !

I was trying really hard to have it ready for next Sat and MOT but that's not going to happen. spent 2 days of the Bank Hol days on it but I'm nowhere near. Issues with the Oil Cooler and the top - the U bends are fowling the forks so need adapters. Plus the Callipers need painting and I'm now waiting for new Foot rests and front heel plates as ive decided I'm not fitting by ones... maybe 2 weeks and it will be set.. but then weve 3 weekends of party-invites too so... sigh - may be longer!

maybe miss read Blubber. The work needed doing anyway.. no MOT and no chance of passing one due to front end being completely in need of renewing. bottom adjusters not adjusting and leaking fluid out the seals....
wasn't prepared to sell with no MOT so started the work and it snowballed...
ill decide if to sell or not when its done and with MOT - the issue is that it would sit in the garage for a further 2 years hardly used. Ive a GTR14 too that I use mainly as I Tour but even that may be going as I want an Africa Twin / CRF1000
Hi Stoli,
After reading your last post, I might just pass on my un asked for opinion ;)
I thought you were doing this to have a personalised 14 that is a little different and to you liking, which is great to see.
But if you are not thinking about keeping it, I would be very wary about putting so much money in to it & personalising it with exhaust wrap etc, as this will probably limit your target sales audience to 5%.
Don't take this the wrong way, but just something to think about if you are more likely to be selling it. :onya:

Hi Sweaty
Thanks for the feedback and its cool - all feedback is good feedback ! I would never mind anyones opinions as if I don't want it.. I cant really comment on anyone elses posts!
My 14 was fairly heaving personalised when I got it 5+ years ago. ive added and added to it over the 5 years as its my bike and put simply - I wanted it how I want it.
When you go really deep into it, whats been done this year is 75% overdue work anyway.
The exhaust wrap by the way was £15 for 15m !! The rear shocks were toast and I got the Ohlins for less than a refurb of the Std ones, i'd consider Ohlins as a selling plus.
The swing arm and fork legs were OK but I'm no polisher.. there were 3 or 4 different kinds of Silver all going on at once and that to me is horrible - so to save Polishing costs I've gone for Powder. Its the same Blue Chrome as the wheels I had done 2+ Years ago, its a fantastic colour.
Yes I splashed on the Oil Cooler - that's a given
The KTech front End - well that was the main problem with the bike - originals bottom adjusters we now know were completely buggered when the previous owner put Progressive Springs in. plus the Seals had started leaking so it really was like riding something with solid tyres ! Ive complained of its handling at length.. for Years! its only know I know why. ive simply ridden over the handling. The KTech was £75 for both adjusters and then oil etc etc.. same as a usual front end refurb.
The larger part o fthe dosh has been on changing tired nuts/bolts for Titanium and yes.. its a bit OTT but they lift the bike overall.
It has so may addons and upgrades that the sad thing is.. nasty parts bring the whole overall bike down..
I must admit also.... I fully intend to ride it when its done. I'm NOT doing this to sell it definitely.. but 80% of the work needed doing before I could ride it anyway....!
Hope explains
Stoli

I'm actually really looking forward to a good ride... it'll be the 1st time in 5 years it'll handle.. at all !!!!!
I'm also really aware that its completely wasted sat there doing Nowt, as it has been for 2 years.. its just a waste !!
so ultimately it might just be a decision based on the fact that it doesn't get used much.. as 95% of my bike riding is in Europe.. and while the GSX is OK at Touring.. there are far far better bikes out there for the purpose..

Cheers for the Post. I have some nice 45 degree and 90 degree fittings to see if I can get over this issue. ive talked to HEL today and we will this option and then if still no joy, new lines will be made.. They had to best-guess the line length!

Well..... a few years back I sold my GSXR750-K8 and got a brand new BMW GS1200 Adv... she went purple and lava came out her ears and generally I was slapped with a "Ban" (if you know what I mean)....
Sold it after 3000 miles due in part to the Ban but mainly due me having very short legs on a very tall bike and not being able to put me feet down. hence the GTR1400
It's cruel that they can use the "Ban" Stoli. It's funny how powerful it is when the gates get locked though.

You young blokes . . . Ya got it all wrong! The ban can work both ways ya know. You disable that tool in their arsenal if you adopt it first, - the bike stays or else . . .
At least with the bike u can jump on and ride for as long as u want and whenever u want !! :)

Yep, like I said an old one! didn't realise it was from 2014 !!! I'm losing track. need to change it too as I only have 2 bikes now .. oh and one nutter-crazy-fast VeloSolex 660!
Yoshi headers and the custom Y Pipe into the 200mm delcaviks - erm very low and very deep. noice is quite nice but it makes kids cry and old uns jump

Well. It's all coming down to today.
MOT at 1.30.
It's all done... I think!!
Apart from a few bolts I'm not happy with and an undertray that's not the right white and is causing me acid reflex every time I look at it.
Finished article photos will be posted if it passes.
Did it pass Stoli ????
Was just thinking about that to...
Last news was that your fuel pump died :confused1:

Did it pass Stoli ????
Unfortunately not Red Biker. Spent all Friday night putting callipers on and bleeding up.
Then up at 06.30 to start at front and move back checking all nuts n bolts... ready for 1.30 MOT.
11am I started it to warm before set off and after about 2 mins it stalled/died.
Thought nothing more if it n got kit on, went to start it and it's dead!! Nothing!
And for the 1st time ever I saw the FI light. Code C41 fuel pump / Relay no power.
Then a mate turned up as a surprise to ride with me.. it all went very downhill.
3 days of fannying about with tremendous help from Barmy n Seth... (a huge THANK YOU) who gave up tons of time to help but sadly still dead
So it's off to a bike electrician Friday. He's sure it's the Meta Alarm that's the root....
I gotta say... it was very nearly used as a BBQ on sat and Monday I was going to break it n sell parts.
I've calmed a bit now....
So the story has another chapter I'm afraid...

Pleased you've addressed your anger problem and managed to 'Calm the farm' Stoli.
Alarms can be a nightmare when they play up.

Thanks Kiwi.
Trust me... it was very nearly hammered with a claw hammer Saturday evening. Then close to being set fire to Sunday. Monday it was being stripped to be sold in bits.
I don't do calm or happy when things play up like this. To be running on the drive ready for the off to not working at all blew my mind....
I'd post a pic up it all ready but I can't from phone. I'll post some tomorrow
I feel your pain. Hope you get it sorted soon.
Sorry to hear the Shitty news Stoli & hope you get it sorted before the hammer comes out. I find things like that bloody frustrating as well, but Don't wreck all the hard work you have done, as it looks great. :onya:
It totally does my swede in when things like this happen...Fingers crossed it gets sorted out easily and cheaply :onya:
Alarm plus re-modelled wiring loom = trouble
Hopefully taking off the **** alarm will resolve it, as everything else seemed to check out. I think also if the battery in the alarm is naff then breaching across the contacts (as per we tried) probably wouldn't work.
Once that alarm is off and smacked with a hammer - then hopefully it will fire into life
Sheesh! nothing worse than having kit on ready to go then hitting a problem! Hope you get sorted :onya:
GSX Gurus to the rescue again!

A little update... the Meta Alarm & Immobiliser had caused the issue with a dead bike. Went to a brilliant Auto Electrition and he's removed it completely.
So yesterday at 09.30 it went for MOT and by 10 I had a nice crispy new ticket!! Yay!!
By 11 I was in Peterborough at wheels and a guy was talking of wanting to buy it !! Hmmmm.
I might go out today for a little run. Brakes need bedding in and I need to do a few tweaks on suspension but yay, months of work and she's looking fine and fully legal.
Stoli
Glad your perseverance paid out. :hat:
Nice to see yours back on the road :boogie:
Glad you got it sorted, bike's looking good :onya:
Great news !! selling your sledgehammer then? :)
Good on ya Stoli, glad it's sorted not. Those alarms seem to be a very temperamental piece of shite. One minute fine then next minute not. Glad I don't have one.
Great to see it finished buddy
Since I got back into biking 4 years ago (9 bikes since then), the first thing I do (if fitted) is have any third part alarms removed...
My insurance on the Honda CB1300 I had went up by £12 a year when I informed them I had the alarm removed..
Worth every penny I would say !!
Well done Stoli on the mega rebuild..

Given Stoli has now started a new post on the finished "article" (which can be found at the link below), then I'm closing this link so it nicely brings this phase of "War and Peace" to a close.... :onya:
