The use of a stinger on bikes, good or bad?
https://www.morebikes.co.uk/45330/video-essex-police-defends-first-use-of-stinger-on-motorcycle/
Depending on the situation I am in favour but I think the rozzer took too much abuse from the turky in the track top, he was lucky not to get a public order voucher or something similar.
I'm divided on this .I think if some scum who stole a motorbike and is being chased or just playing with the police then fair enough use them and if the scumbag crashes all good.
But if they use it in general against bikes not good .
To be honest i cant make head nor tale what the hell is going on in the video clip anyway and an left with more questions than answers :confused1:
And as for stingers being used on bikes i agree with Seth !
Quote...the deployment of the system on two-wheel vehicles is not recommended unless the use of deadly
force can be legally justified.
Quote is from the manufacturer's Training Manual (page 6). https://www.fedsig.com/resource-document/file/13254 (https://www.fedsig.com/resource-document/file/13254)
The way I see this video is that the officer used the device recklessly. When he decided to use the device, the biker was going slow and could have easily stopped. He opened the throttle in the moment the guy threw the stinger. The kids were out off the way by then, which the biker could see clearly.
BTW I do oppose filtering!
When I read "stinger" I first thought of this:
Andre..
I also am not a fan of filtering !
My mates think I am a wimp but one of them had his V max written off when a car U turned in front of him..
He was lucky with just bruises and knackered leathers..

My daughter in law ia a barrister and deals with about 2 motorcycle court cases a week - 80% cars turning right and the rest are filtering accidents - she often asks my advice as a biker not that I know much ! :)
I watched the video, dunno why everyone was being stopped, but, the copper had the stinger in his hands from the start, he was ready to deploy it before the bikes even got there. :furious: This shows me he was being antagonistic and a fecken jobsworth. :jack: Just an asshole, from the info at hand.
Remind me never to go to Southend.
It's not often you see a video where everyone is in the wrong, but maybe this is one. The copper deployed the stinger out of frustration, the bikers should have stopped and waited for the all clear, they should have kept quiet instead of aggravating the situation etc. etc.
Anyway filtering is great, I'm all for it. What's the point of having smaller and more agile vehicles if they can't go through the gaps where bigger things can't go? It's dangerous mainly because cars don't look before turning and bikers go too fast (or also don't look). Imagine sitting in traffic at 30C in your leathers and not being able to move, surrounded by cars with their aircon on full blast. Doesn't make sense to me.

You have my support at least.
Filtering is something I do occasionally, reluctantly and with extreme caution.
If traffic is moving, even slowly, I'll stay in lane. If cars are nose to tail with no chance of sudden lane switches I may steal a little ground at times.
I think the traffic police officer was in the wrong here - he had the stinger in his hand and had every intention of using it so as a supposedly highly trained traffic officer he must have been aware of his surroundings and what happens when a rider suddenly comes off a bike it can become a unpredictable missile and as it was a bank holiday weekend there must have been a lot of pedestrians there - so IMO he acted in the wrong
On the other side the biker who the stinger was aimed at was also wrong he would or should have been aware of the traffic and was filtering a tad too fast again IMO - don't start me on the quad riders
The fella in the tracktop was also wrong but obviously very angry at the deployment of the stinger but no need to get in the officers face
I commute to work and filter all the time but only in slow moving traffic and within speed limits - I would get nowhere if I didnt use filtering - but I know the risks and am super aware of my surroundings

A rule always has exceptions. I grant that, and I don't say that I will never ever filter. "No chance of sudden lane switches". Come to Germany and you'll find drivers who suddenly veer to the side to block a bike or cycle from filtering. No lane to switch but close off the few feet available. Some mad people out (t)here.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting we all hurtle between cars without being careful, but filtering is perfectly legal in the UK as long as you follow the rules.
Same down here Fishy, legal as long as you follow the rules. Andre, we have assholes like that down here too. Hmm , Wonder if they're German tourists??
Nah, just pullin yer leg, They'll be locals.

Pretty much the same here. It is not explicitly forbidden, but other rules make it nearly impossible to do so legally. Most police will close their eyes or give you a smile when you filter as long as you are not reckless.

That's the way I see it also Del. The police officer and filtering biker are in the wrong both dangerous. The officer should have known better tho.
A bit more info, looks like the rozzer was correct to use it.

Of cause it looks better when the video has been cooked by the media (see the previous video). Correct use would have been when use of deadly force was legally justified, which clearly was not the case.
