First day of restoration and being the lousy bastard I am I baulked at paying $750 for a pair of mufflers. I then remembered the couple of sets of 1400 ones under the house that might fit. So with a little bit of work my newly acquired Katana will now wear GSX1400 mufflers.
Nice mate. Took it off Jeff's hands hey.
:onya:
Nothing wrong with those Pete.
Looks like a rewarding project. Will watch progress with interest.
Those will work. :onya:
look good, a great idea.
Always good to save money :8:
But haven't you just doubled the weight of the Katana? :stir:
Paint it black so it gets it's speed back
paint it blue and white and it'll be the fastest ever .
:stir:
Mufflers finally fitted and the Kat is now nice and quiet ... just like my 14. So I now have the pleasure of hearing the induction roar from both the 1400 and the poor little 1100cc Kat engine as they struggle with the extra weight from those cans. :smitten:
I've also decided that because it's not a race bike and fast scares me now that primer is my colour. :onya:
That didn't come out too bad, rest of the bike looks pretty tidy.
Looks good maybe worth a look at removing the internals of the exhausts to lighten them up a bit .
That said it looks great .
:onya:
Nice job Pete - as usual :onya: :notworthy:
Nice job Pete, looking Great. :onya:
So here's the situation now ... hope I can remember how it goes together.
The rear wheel won't work like that needs to be in line with the front :stir:
But seriously looks a great project hopefully all goes smooth and you post lots of pictures as you go .
Good luck with it :hat:
Looks like you have some work ahead of you now Pete. Will be one sweet Kat when you are finished though 👍
Hope you don't have any parts left over when your finished😉
Wait till the Anorak's down the Classic Club see what you have done. Period parts. :stir:
Looks like those headers did the trick that's why I bought them for that modification.

But they're genuine Suzuki mufflers. Sounds like I'd better join the VJMC ... they let you in so obviously they don't care. :onya:
I was up near you today at the Gosford Classic Car Museum ... if you haven't seen it ... WOW.
Yes they let me in then made me a Rep to keep an eye on people not doing the right thing :stir:
Looks like I'll have to wait until you're out of the country before I apply for membership then.
See you on Thursday Jeffrey ... you can give me a guided tour of the things I have to do to keep the VJMC Anoraks happy.
Today I collected the Katana frame from the sandblaster's and was greeted with this. Apparently it's a common fault.
The bike won't be ridden in anger so it should be OK .... I hope.
Rusty sections all brazed up so it's ready for paint. The rotisserie looks primitive but works a treat.
That indeed is a common place to rot. Not the first I have seen to have that.
Good you fixed it in time :onya:
That's not a nice surprise Pete. Good to find out now & have it fixed though.
Today the frame got a couple of coats of paint before I got around to cleaning the engine & wheels in preparation for their paint. After lunch I gave the disc rotors a clean up grind.
Black primer now that's different, will look good with the wheels :stir:

Black? You know I'm colour blind Jeff ... is it really black? That prick at the paint shop told me it was
grey primer. I thought it had too much gloss to be a primer. If people with no taste buy black bikes I suppose I can lower my standards and live with a black frame.
Is it really black or are you taking the piss? :confused1:
It's black in the pic

The wheels ... what colour were they going to be Jeff? The candy red has been shelved.
I'm now painting them the same colour as the Suzuki stickers on the tank ... I'm told that's orange. With the wheel spokes being a nightmare to polish I'm putting a clear coat over the lot after the orange? paint goes on.

If you still have the contact details for the guy your bought it off Pete, give him a call and abuse him. I just hope he not one of those dodgy blokes who sells stuff & then runs of overseas.
:stir: :rofl2:
What brands of ice cream will you be selling.
I think that frame is blue the same as the sear and tail fairing.
Ice cream? Now I am confused. ???
Ooooh, that's going to look nice when its done, I'm dead envious!!
Just for you Irish. The colour in the photo isn't even close but you need something to brighten your day.
I don't need my work shirts anymore, will post them.
Looks like is been moved into the house.
Looks like it's coming along now Pete 👍
Irish, that work shirt does look like a very good match to the Suzuki decal on the tank. It will be great to see Pete riding his Kat in his hi vis work shirts :smile2:

Not for long mate. The bits when finished were left in the bedroom for safe keeping so I thought I'd do a dry assembly of the wheels. Next week it goes outside again for engine fitting where it will stay.
Don't forget the seat
The motor is finally ready to install so once I source something to protect the frame then I'll be another step closer to a finished bike. The cam box will be bolted on once the motor is in the frame. Not having it there on installation gives you that bit more clearance.
Hey Irish ... did I ever tell you I like bling?
Lovely work Pete, Irish picked a very worthy new owner alright.
amazing work.

And it was almost sold to a Kiwi, but I'm glad it went to Pete as I will be getting it back again in the future.
Great work Pete 👍
Lovely work on that engine Snapey!
I love what ya doing there mate
Lovely stuff Snapey, love to see people doing somthing different and it works :onya:
The Katana is now a roller so I moved it to the garage from the carport yesterday morning. Although it wasn't a particularly frosty night everything was soaked and I really don't want the bike rusting away before I get to ride it. The poor old 14 has been relegated to the shed with the MX bikes.
So yesterday the header pipes and collectors were taken for chrome and a lot of the sheet metal blasted and primed with more cleaning up and painting today. Brake parts ordered from the UK are on the way so I can almost see a light at the end of the tunnel.
I really should get a better camera or at least set up the photo's better.
Nice work Pete, looks to be coming along very nicely.
What shocks did you put on it.
Project is kicking along well :)
As for camera - yeas, you probably should.
You a smart phone user? An update on that will probably cost you the same as a basic camera and you get the updated phone part for free.. cameras on the newer phones are really very good.

Smart phone .... not me Michael. Pictured is the phone I have. It might have a camera, I don't know. I can receive calls by pushing the green button & the red one to hang up. If I need to make a call I have to ask someone to do it for me because I honestly don't know how. If people ask for my mobile number I give them that little piece of paper because I don't know what the number is. Do I take the phone with me when I go out? No, because it's a bloody nuisance & the battery would be flat anyway.
Sad part is that all of that is a true story that I'm sure can be confirmed by Irish & Sweaty.
Looking really good Pete!
Coming along very nicely Pete.
And yes, I can confirm everything you said about your great phone

I'll run a check to see if they are a period part before I can allow it to be passed for Historic Registration :stir:
The boss supplied me the same phone for use during work hours.
It has a whopping 3.2MP camera.
And a standby time of over a week with regular use. Its not advanced but as for makings calls it's more than sufficient :onya:
Today the Katana came off the stand in anticipation of a ride but a couple of issues came up with the tank so the ride is off until I finish re-spraying it. I'm loving the new chrome header pipes & GSX1400 mufflers.
Very nice Pete, very nice
Looking good Pete.......brings back memories of those things hustling around Amaroo.
Looking Sweet Pete :onya:
That's a fine looking Kat. :onya:
Are the pipes supposed to be black and the frame silver. :stir:
I will try to get down a day next week mate before I head off.

Looking good Snapey ! (The bike that is.:P )
Thats looking awsome ! ..... not sure about the colour though .... ginger is unusual :imrgreen:
Looks cool Pete well done mate
I've got a front brake part on back order so once that arrives and fitted then the Kat is finished. Not quite the stock look I originally wanted but I do like some bling and things a bit different.
Very nice Pete, cracking job!!!! :notworthy:
:onya:
Looks fantastic
Awesome job Snapey, you can be rightly proud of that.
Excellent, love your colour scheme & the number plate is very clever.
Very nice. Always good to see another Kat. I'm quite envious!
I still want to replace the one I sold in the UK, but finding an SD model, that's both affordable (for me) and not a mess hasn't happened. I do like the earlier models but I have my heart set on another later model.
The SD had half alloy pegs not rubber, GSXR style 6 spoke wheels not snowflakes, a black engine with slightly different internals.

I like that Grog although the purists will hate it. I think tuning those flat slides for the road might be a problem.
I like the look of that too. Mean looking Kat.

I had CR's and pods on the Katana, more power up top but a pain in the arse on idle, I ended up swapping with a mate for standard carbs and airbox he used them on a project bike for the Phillip Island Classic.
The Katana is finally finished except for a non working tacho. I've got around 800 pages of manuals but not one word about diagnosing the problem of whether the tacho is faulty or the sender. Not that it's needed because the bike is so bloody uncomfortable to ride it won't see much time with me on it.
Looks lovely Pete. Shame she's uncomfortable to ride though after all that work
Very nice i reckon and usually dont like orange. Can remember the comfort thing, think thats why, at time i got gsx1100.
I'll be back next year to pick it up.
As for comfort zero. They are a bike for hooning around on, they feel small like a 250 with heaps of grunt, the biggest day ride I did on it would have been about 500 klms. If the GPZ900R had the Suzuki reliability it would be my favourite early superbike.
Mother and daughter.
That's a bloody beauty Pete. Where did you get that done ?
Very Very Smart Pete well done fella :onya:

Just finished reading this rebuild. Great job, looks fantastic. Had a Katana 1100 also, still love the looks.
