They are not a straight bolt, they have a shoulder on them but the thread is M8.

Yes they have a shoulder on them, but the bolt size does not reduce that I recall. The only bolt that does that (from memory) is the front torque arm bolt.

Manual and Parts Microfiche quotes M10 x45 - see item 11 in diagram below

The thread size does reduce from the shoulder, I only changed disks yesterday, but I didn't measure them.

Yep, the shack bolts are indeed M10 x 45mm but I'm fairly sure they are a fine thread, 1.25mm pitch as opposed to the standard M10 x 1.5.  Or at least that's what I replaced mine with.

I'm just curious, what difference would it make (if any) if you replaced the nut & bolt with a thread of 1.5 instead if 1.25?  Surely if you replace both & use 10 x 45 the thread size wouldn't matter.

The torque settings for each fastener on the bike are designed for a specific thread. If you apply the same torque to a coarse thread you'll have less clamping force than you would on a fine thread. The thread gives you mechanical advantage, just like a ramp or lever.

It would appear that changing 2 bolts is a bit of a nightmare!!!!

M10 45 Titanium have been purchased for the shocks....

My GSX will be full of new shiny bolts soon. Rebuild going well but the list of bits going on has gone POW!!!
