Hi,
I'm fitting GSXR1000 forks with the radial Tokico calipers. I'm going to use the standard master cylinder. To anyone that has already done this conversion, did you need to use custom length brake lines or is there an off the shelf set that are the correct length.
Cheers,
Gav.
You would need to measure the required length and contact the brake line manufacturer to be absolutely sure. Measure the required length with the bars at full lock and give yourself another inch to be safe :onya:
Bear in mind, radial calipers sit lower on the brake disk compared to old school calipers so even the standard 14 length may fall short (too long is better than too short when it comes to brake lines, too short will cause them to go under tension when moving the bars to full lock and may even restrict range of movement.) GSXR1000 lines will be too short and wont work due to the 14 having old school bars which sit much higher than GSXR clipons.
It doesn't take long to have custom lines made so if I were you, i'd just hold out for the conversion to be completed before even thinking about it. Is there any reason you want to use the standard master cylinder. If you want the benefits of radial and can afford the conversion, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't go radial with that as well :whatever:
Oh, and before someone else mentions it, it's polite to at least introduce yourself before wading in with the questions :onya:
Well said lloydjames :salute:
It's always nice to say hello first .
Other thing to watch is what yokes you use as the fact field will be to short for the bike .
I have 75mm extenders in my bking forks to get the bike at the correct night.
Sorry for not introducing myself. I used to be on my old site years ago. I have a 2001 GSX1400 but it has been off the road for years and have finally got my arse in gear to get it sorted out.
Thanks for the advice. Thought the brake lines would need to be custom length but was just checking in case another set of lines would fit.
Hadn't thought about changing to a radial master cylinder so I will have to look into it.
I'm using custom yokes to accommodate the shorter fork length.
Cheers,
Gav.
Having a hydraulic clutch works well for radial conversion. It allows you to get a matching pair of brake and clutch master cylinders . Having a cable clutch would leave you with odd levers. Just me being picky though.
For radial master cylinders, I would personally go for a pair of GSXR1000 the same year as the calipers. This will ensure the correct piston ratio inside the master cylinder. Master cylinder piston size and stroke is determined by the total surface area of the pistons in the calipers.
If you just chuck any old master cylinder on without checking the piston ratio is correct you could end up with brakes that work like a light switch, or you could be pulling the lever all the way back to the grip to generate any power. Both would be dangerous and certainly result in a MOT failure.
You could go full on Brembo if you sleep on a bed of money but salvaged/Ebay master cylinders would be easy to get hold of and cheaper. With any luck, you could find a complete GSXR front end off a rear end damaged bike.
I have bking brake and clutch master cylinders for my front-end convertion with after market tops so they don't say bking on them .
They also will take the standard mirrors (with extended stems do i can see behind me). The clutch switch and brake light switch.
@seth Seth mate, have I got the plan for you! I know how we can get you to 5000 posts in quick time!
Plan is go back & edit each post you've done to date & fix any spelling errors!!! Plan or what! Now take the above post, it's just 1 post at the moment, but if you go & fix 1 'error' at a time (2 above) that makes 3 posts from this 1 entry. See you're up to 2k + posts now, go back & edit 'selectively' & bang, you're up to 5k in no time.
No thanks required bro. :coffeescreen: :coffeescreen:
:rulez: :redcard:
See barmy used to do that for me back in the early days :salute:
I guess he doesn't love me anymore
Also just got a new phone and the predictive text is much worse than on my old phone :rofl2:

Don't.
If your putting Sportsbike masters on stock or Renthal bars they will look very odd. They sit at the wrong angle. Yes they work but its far from ideal in looks or use. Been there, done that. I now use clip-on masters on clip-on's, handle bar masters on handle bars.
Radial masters are OK but bikes like the Gen-2 Busa used both radial and non-radial masters with its radial callipers and there's not great difference. The Gen-2 and B-King came out the same time with very similar callipers, one used a radial master, one didn't.
Not great pics (sorry) but Hayabusa masters on Renthal bars showing the poor angle they are mounted at. Not something I'll be doing again.

Gidday Tony! Nice to see you mate!
Yeah Tony. Glad youre back. Col, neither me or you liked our upside down forks. Not at all comfy.
