Title: Does stainless steel rust?
Post by: Notty on Wednesday, 21 February 2018, 10:33 PM
I have changed most of the furry Suzuki crap bolts to stainless steel and was very pleased with ProBolt - however just refitted the callipers after my mudguard being painted and noticed 2 of the calliper pinch bolts are decidedly rusty but the others seem ok - Does stainless steel rust?  ???

Yes low grade stainless can rust as can all stainless with time.
Stainless is steel with more chrome/nickel to make it corrosion resistant.

If it's probolt stuff give them a call as I'm sure there lot should be better than that so they should replace f.o.c. I'll be speaking to them on a week on Sunday as looking to buy some bits at the Scottish bike show .

mass product stainless bolts are 2 types. A2 (304) and A4 (316).
A2 is general, most often used bolts, and A4 is marine grade stainless steel, what is IMHO more suitable for usage on motorcycle (I personally prefer to use A4)
As far as I know, Probolt sells A2 bolts.

there is some info about stainless steel: https://www.jclarkemarine.com/blogs/news/53229381-stainless-steel-304-vs-316-a2-vs-a4

Stainless steel does not like salt and Chlorides.... so don't clean them with bleach ;)

Stainless steel can rust in certain circumstances, both A2 and A4.
Your picture is not very sharp, but the screw seems to be rusty from inside. That rusting steel material can come also from your hex wrench.

ProBolt have emailed and agreed very unusual - the bike is only washed with mild soapy neutral PH - not Muc off or other chemical cleaners -
They have offered to replace the bolts  :) :) :) :)

Worked in the swimming pool industry for many, many years, if you use A4 stainless, bleach will not be a problem. Chlorine will eat anything else pretty quickly.
