Given I've just ordered some Renthal bars, can someone please tell me if I need to fit end weights to these? Will the OEM ones fit? What if I put Bar End mirrors on? (got a new set sitting here) Just generally what's the go on these bars. Thx.
internal diameter of renthals is much smaller than std you'll need different bar ends or a way to modify the way the std ones fit.
same with mounting bar-end mirrors.
More stuff to buy then. What sort of weight (for the bar end weights) should I be looking for then?
are your std bar end weights screwed into the bar or into a fitting in the bar by a bolt ?
if its just a long bolt then you should be able to use a through bolt of the correct size for the renthals (they go in to a blind hole in concrete to fix a beam or the like) then fix your bar end weights to them or bar end mirror.
just dont over tighten on the throttle side of the bars.
Bar Mirrors would take the place / perform the function of, the end weights I assume. Yeah, the std weights are held in place with a long bolt. The mirrors I've got have the rubber expanding system to lock them in, or take that bit off & use a bolt.
then as long as you can fit the rubber part in to the renthals you'll be fine if not you'll need a smaller diameter rubber bit .
hope that makes sense.
A small diameter rubber bit? Hmm, haven't seen one of those for years, & if I did still have some around they'd probably be perished due to old age. I'd have to go buy some new ones. :rofl2:
Thx Seth, yeah it makes sense.
yippee back to the gutter :stir:
what about something like these from Australia

That's what I've got. Just rubber expanding bit instead of metal expanding bit. I brought them for the black ages ago, fitted them up, didn't like them so took them off again & put extenders on for the std mirrors.
Now that the black is going to have a different life to touring, the bar end mirrors may find their way back on.
to replace the rubber bits ive seen folk use small rubber hose as long as if fits in the bars and the bolt you have fits down the center put the nut on the end of the thread pish it all the way in then when you tighten everything up it will grip the inside fixing the bar ends or mirrors in place .
hopefully this helps
I'll have to wait till the bars turn up & assess my options then. Don't want to go buy some new weights & find the mirrors fit ok, or the colour of the new weights doesn't match / compliment the bars. Don't know what colour bars I'll be sent. Could be gold or black. Best I wait n see before going too much further with new weights / mirrors.
Depending on the type of bar end mirrors you've got, you possibly wont be able to fit the bar end weights..I didn't bother and it's fine :onya:
Hey Guys,
Saw this thread - I ve been contemplating the bar end mirrors as well. I gave up as my concern is that the mirrors would get knocked a lot easier than when in their original position, however seeing Froudy's photo, I like that look a lot better than the factory mirrors.
I've got an aftermarket 'bar thats similar to a Renthal with tapered ends and thicker central section, requires custom clamps etc.
The current bar ends are held in with a stainless countersunk socket head bolt, through a bit of rubber and then tightened. I might try the expanding bolt, but theyre hard to find in stainless AND with countersunk heads.
The finish of the ends of the bar end mirrors is very neat.
Thanks for the pic.

For bar ends I'd go for the R&Gs, they have a solid fixing rather than the expanding rubber bung type.
I tried the rubber bung type but found that at the final bit of tightening the bar end moves away from the end of the bar which makes for an annoyingly loose and rattly throttle tube by allowing too much end float, only a couple of mm, but I hated that slight movement. They're two or three times the price, but R&Gs sorted that, so worth it for me!
Thanks

Mine are tight..But still loose enough to adjust them up and down if they get knocked ;)
