Title: Tank & Fuel Filter Info

Thanks for the post that GSXbarmy put up on Fuel filter and Tank Clean it is spot on!
Very Grateful.
Quote from mech was out of my league but after completing the job and can see why.
My tank had a cup of filthy water and plenty of grunge in the filters not sure how it actually was running.
I did the HP filter bypass while i was at it.
Found the reason there was so much water was the overflow tube was completely blocked ( not sure for how long) so any water that got around the fill cap made it way into the tank.
Cheers

@grog still pondering about doing the high pressure bypass.

Main reason against it is that I still have to get the pump out to clean the tea bag. OK, it's easy to check the bypass and determine if I should bother cleaning the bag. Right? Or am I missing something?

Andre, not sure what you mean. pump out, clean or replace tea bag, drill thru high pressure, very easy if follow instructions. fit obtained fuel filter at rear of tank, near hold down bolts, match up hoses. job done. all i do now is unscrew filter, clean n check. my fuel pump works easier, can tell by noise when gauges sweeping, bike just revs right thru. my opinion, mine only, that stupid hi pressure filter has lots of resistance, even after flushing with cleaner. just something to never bother you again. original clip on fittings are easy to cut from original hose, refit to new hose. dont use ordinary hose clamps, get efi high pressure ones, cheap as. if i got another 14, this would be top on my list to do.

top tip to help is to fit a better quality inline filter in the hose between the tank and fuel pump before the teabag as the pump is gravity fed so a filter there will stop any crap getting as far as the teabag in the first place a very cheap upgrade to the whole system.

Andre, not sure what you mean

Meant that I still have to clean the tea bag. At same time the pumps high pressure filter can be cleaned. So why doing the bypass?

And here comes thee Grog with a response that makes sense!  :salute: First time I have heard this (ok, sometimes I miss things  )

that stupid hi pressure filter has lots of resistance, even after flushing with cleaner.

But I did read to be aware that the bypass filter has to have a sufficient flow rating. For the 14 this would have to be at least 2400 ml/minute.

Thank you very much @seth
That would certainly reduce (hose is not the only way the pump gets fuel) the amount of crap the tea bag has to filter as that hose delivers the fuel from the lowest part of the tank where most of the crap would hang out.

The bypass and your top tip seem to be a winning combo.

VERY happy now  :boogie2:

not sure i understand Seth. tea bag is where fuel is introduced to pump. which hose do you mean.

in the small hoses from the back of the tank underneath to the bottom of the fuel pump housing (teabag filter inside this housing in the fuel pump)

this small hose must be the main feed to the fuel pump as i had a problem a couple of years ago when some masking tape from the respray partly blocked the tank end making the bike run rough and starving it of fuel.

Andre, finding a filter to fit in space, has right microns and flow was hardest part of mod. i spent hours. pro flow i chose is brilliant. not sure on flow capacity but is good. made in oz so post to you maybe expensive, not sure. unscrew and clean is really good. i started looking for a disposable but never found one small enough. the t30 pump in gsx is maybe the worlds most used, works so well. lancers with 250 bhp use it, shame to see it strangled by a stupid design. had a ford mondeo at work today, whole unit filter, due for replacement, 1400 oz dollars to do job. club sport holden, double horsepower, external filter, 70 bucks. lots of dollars left for beer on holden.

Actually I am not worried at all as work and sourcing are part of the fun owning a bike. A different kind of fun than riding but still a great deal of fun. My 2nd 14 is a lot more fun than my 1st. I was working then and just shelled out the dough to have the dealer's mechanics do all the work. How boring :happy1:

Hi Grog,
I'm fuel injecting my 1600 Cortina powered Sprite and  I was going to use the same sintered bronze filter that we used, a salesman at my local performance shop said I would get better filtration and flow out of a stainless filter, it was physically larger though. They sold both, our sintered bronze one was about half the price in their shop.

those old 1600 were a mighty motor. Kent from memory was name. as apprentice i cleaned out literally hundreds of blocks etc. my boss was aust. under 2 litre spoert sedan champ. lotus 23b was car. i once sat on floor lhs, did 130 mph on track. fva, four valve assembly, was fitted to a basic block. timing belts to drive head were a novelty then. side draught carbs, he then imported japanese bits to upgrade celica/corolla. had first levin agency in oz. a gtho falcon was 5490 bucks, a pair of carbs for celica were nearly 2g.

Back on topic.

@RickC Is this the the Epman? (Found them cheaper but this link includes a nice pick of the inerts)

Before I can do the high and low pressure filter mods I have to empty that fuel tank. I prefer to empty it riding... fat chance of that though. After over 2 1/2 months of living in a dreary wet world and the outlook for the next weeks not being better it won't happen. Had the biggest storm in over 10 years pass through on Thursday. Now back to the usual shite weather.

That looks like the one Andre, I'm just not sure how well it would fit under the tank.

Maybe have to take out the sledge hammer to make it fit.  :coffeescreen:

Epman has more in its line up. Will have a looksee.

I've ordered one like you posted Andre from China for US $12 delivered for my car, if you aren't in a hurry I can take a picture of both filter variants side by side with a ruler or some dimensions.
Title: Re: Tank & Fuel Filter Info
Post by: Andre on Saturday, 20 January 2018, 10:44 PM
The dimensions are:
Length Including Fittings - 180mm
Diameter Of Filter - 49mm

Having looked around I am having serious doubts about it. Can't find that Italian company online. Chinese made products CAN be great as long as a reputable (mostly non-chinese) company stands behind it. I can't stand deceivers (other word for criminals) regardless where they are from but that country seems to have a knick of breeding them.
