Hello boys and girls... First of all happy new year...
Since I took early retirement - hate to gloat. :stir: Clocking up more and more mileage now. Soon 22000 will be on the clock. Gonna easy pass 24000 this year. What are members thoughts as to checking valve clearances?
Engine sweet as a sweet thing at the mo. Leave well alone -if it isn't broke don't fix it and all that. I just wondered what other members do. Last 14 owner I was speaking to. His never been done in 45000 miles!
Many thanks in advance.
BB.
As you say Brian, if it ain't broke....
Chances of them being out are highly unlikely to extremely remote IMO. More I'd think about balancing your fuel injection and checking/adjusting your TPS, more likely to need checking/adjustment.

Everyone I read of who has checked the valve clearances on the 14 found it to be a waste of time. Even at high mileage. Maybe the highmilers here can pitch in.
I checked mine at 46000 km because I had to take the head cover off to replace the gasket due to a nasty leaky spark plug. Of cause they where within spec. No big deal if they would be a little bit out of spec on the upper side. Would be much worse on the lower end.
However, one intake valve was just within spec. Only had some wide-stepped gauges so I couldn't determine how different the clearance was to the other intake valves. Being the type of person I am, I want them all to have the same clearance. Will get a nice set of gauges and another gasket to do some exact checking and syncing these valves if needed. My bike purrs like a kitten now but I like it to sound like a hummingbird :coffeescreen:
Andre..
With your attention to detail and perfectionism, anyone would think you were German !
Can't be German as them Germans think I am a perfectionist :happy1:
However, I am not a true perfectionist. I do leave gaps because getting to 100% in this world of entropy is a work for Sisyphus and there is the law of diminishing returns. And for things that don't interest me, but have to do, I try to get by with the absolute minimum.
P.S. I am not that keen on associating with Germans. I am truly sad about this but that's just the way it is.
At 24k miles unless you enjoy pulling things apart for fun I wouldn't worry about valve clearances.
After 180k kms all mine were in spec and have been since new. I change oil and filter every 5k kms. Now at 203k kms without issue.
If you want to do something that has much more chance of needing doing, pull the fuel pump and clean the filters!!
:8:
I'd check them for peace of mind, it's not a difficult job.
Having said that, I checked mine at 15k, 50k & 100k. They've never changed.
Thanks for all replies - very much appreciated. :salute:
I checked clearances at 65 000 km and 95 000 km. Not any differences and no need to adjust.
Now I have to check and adjust in 116 000 km because I ´m changing to better cams.
Mine were checked at 14 000 - waste of money.
Checked them myself at 28 000 - waste of money and my time.
Almost 46 000 miles on the clock now and I'll maybe think about checking them at 60 000 miles.
