Title: Wheelchair mods
Post by: Snapey on Wednesday, 27 December 2017, 12:34 AM
Because my wife is now confined to a wheelchair we needed something to cart her around so a couple of months ago I bought a Japanese import Toyota Alphard Welcab. The Welcab bit means it's equipped with a detachable wheelchair. Unfortunately said wheelchair can't be wheeled by the occupant and needs someone to push it around. Now my wife loves to shop, so pushing her and a loaded shopping trolley is difficult so the 14 was put in a corner for a couple of days while I thought of ways to get her mobile.

I had a small mobility scooter that was going to waste so I thought if I cut it in two I could put one half at each end and join it in the middle. So with a bit of cutting, turning & welding we now have a motorised Alphard wheelchair. It takes about a minute to set up & the same to break it down but it means dear wife can now zoom around the shops without having to rely on being pushed.

Well done Pete, looks like plenty of room under the seat for shopping storage - or, a turbo battery?   High speed shopping!

It would be interesting Dave although in the end I can see two silly old buggers confusing each other with technical bull shit  and getting nothing done. :undecided:

Wey-hey!!
What a fantastic bit of work there, I love it, you're a real clever fella. :salute:
One thing springs to mind however, since you have to take the wheelchair AND the scoot, why not just take & use the scoot, or is it a 'comfort' thing??J
Just before he passed, I bought my old dad both a wheelchair and a scooter, the chair was a bit 'basic' , push job,  big wheel at the back jobbie, but the mobility scoot was a real nice comfy, swivel captains-seat model with large wheels etc.
I still have them, might be needing them soon. :)

That would be too simple Lawrie. Unfortunately transferring isn't possible without a patient lift & sling.

The scooter doesn't take up much room .... it's just clamped to the tool box. see pic. I could put it inside the box but that's for the bike towing rack.

There's been more jeering than cheering in the 49 years we've been married Ben.
