Title: 4day solo ride
Post by: Sweaty on Saturday, 16 December 2017, 06:55 PM
Well, I had to take annual leave from Friday as work is very slow this time of year & the missus started a new job, so has no leave available.
So, I am not hanging around the house doing chores. I am jumping on the bike early in the morning & doing a 4 day solo ride to explore the Victorian high country, which is an area I have not been to before and has some amazing roads & scenery (Snapey & Irish can confirm)
Looking at just over 2000kms total, with a 600km journey down, the long way over the blue mountains & through Cowra & Young then onto the pub at Tumbarumba.
Will take some photos along the way & post a couple as I go.

Been a great days riding in hot dry weather today. Most of it in 36 degrees, which is fine when you are moving & better than rain. Clocked up 560 kms through the Central west area, so the pics are not that great, as it is very dry out here this time of year, but hopefully some nicer pics tomorrow in the alpine region.
First pic, is leaving Home at 6am
Last pic, says it all.

Well deserved Sweaty!  I'm picking 1 isn't going to be sufficient either . . .        Is that an Air Hawk you've got fitted?
Title: Re: 4day solo ride
Post by: Sweaty on Sunday, 17 December 2017, 06:01 PM
I've had more than 1 now Col
& Spot on about the air hawk. I have had my seat reshaped to take out the slope into the tank, so this sits on there quite well. I need it, as I am backside deficient (my wife described my rear end as "a board with a hole") so yes, it's pretty flat
So, the air hawk helps, but I still get a sore arse after a couple of hours

That wasn't Xmas dec's it was mould growing on the wall, and the red patch on the left hand side one, was where a guy had his head slammed against the wall

Still tried to steal them though Pete  ;)

There's something missing . . . .  no bugs splattered on the bike?  Are you riding so fast you're vaporising them? or are you polishing it up prior to next photo shoot?

Nice looking area though, roads would be a bit quiet aye? Be able to let her stretch her legs now & again?

Now those 2nd set of pics have some nice uphill corners!  Finish off with a beer or 3, good on ya. Glad you're having a great time.

Is that beer a schooner?  Looks about a 400 - 425ml to me.  Do you guys have jugs? a 1L from which you pour your 7's or 8's from?
Title: Re: 4day solo ride
Post by: VladTepes on Monday, 18 December 2017, 04:41 PM

Ok course we have jugs, but it's not very civilised to order one if you are on your Pat Malone.

Ideally, beer should be drunk in pint measures.
Title: Re: 4day solo ride
Post by: KiwiCol on Monday, 18 December 2017, 04:46 PM
I don't get it Vlad? Why not? What's uncivilised about getting a jug as opposed to 2 pints?   I'm a thirsty bloke & it saves boot leather doing less trips to the bar & it's cheaper to get a jug (usually)
Besides, with a jug, you've got enough to share with anyone who'd care to join you for a coldie.

Good on ya Stevie going on your own, you didn't want me along  ;)
Nice pics mate brings back memories I need to do it again in the new year.
My personally modified seat never need to stand up, it's called gel.
Title: Re: 4day solo ride
Post by: KiwiCol on Monday, 18 December 2017, 04:53 PM
Irish, can you expand on the gel addition please?  I see Sweaty has an Air Hawk & you've got a gel version.  What's it called & where might one be found?  I'll jump on ebay now & see if they're on there.

Post by: Irish in Oz on Monday, 18 December 2017, 05:10 PM
Col, I originally bought it for the missus for weekend rides on the XJ900 only a few years ago, so the throughover panniers buckle didn't dimple her bottom. Anyway like everyone I had problems on long journeys, so i used it and everything was better then I reversed the gel so more at front and prefect, got on ebay came from UK some Medical supply company has not broken open splenty of use, will check my old ebay purchases.

Air Hawks are not cheap. But gel is the way contours around your balls you have too be happy with that.

Thanks Irish, that's excellent.  Way better value than ebay lot.
Title: Re: 4day solo ride
Post by: Sweaty on Monday, 18 December 2017, 06:45 PM
Don't worry, I still love you Irish (in a non gay way of course )
I decided after my first 3 day solo ride 2 Year's ago at this same time of year, that I am going to do it every year, and explore areas I have not been to before, by myself. So this is my 3rd solo ride.
This way I can stop, leave, piss, change plans etc & basically do what ever the hell I like without thinking about others.
I wouldn't do any of this if anyone came with me, as I know this type of thing annoys me when you are on a group ride and trying to cover a lot of kms. I have been going to bed early & been on the bike by 6.30am to compensate for stopping where ever I like & taking photos etc  :)
Definately prefer going on group rides 98% of the time, but I do love doing this when I have to take holidays in Dec now, and would recommend it to anyone that can handle spending a couple of nights by themselves.

Tim Shaw. I pasted some info below.

He became best known to Australian TV audiences as ("The Demtel Man") between 1992-1995 as he presented as the face of an infomercial "AS Seen On TV" sales company TV commercials & infomercials for Demtel International. He popularized the expression "but wait, there's more" in Australia. He was also well known for offering a free set of steak knives to anyone who placed an order within a set timeframe.[1]

By the photo's it looks like you did the Omeo, Bogong High Plains & Mt Hotham. The divided street ,,, Bright? You're a lucky man Steve.

This is a route I sent JW when he asked for advice for the April 4 dayer. I don't think he liked it because it meant a bit of dirt on the Bonang the next day. I think similar to your route. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26559204

Good pick up Col. I actually bought a 3 pack of sponge cloths on day 1, to wipe my visor down with every stop, as there are 1000's of little bugs out here, as well as your usual ones. But thought it was a good idea to quickly wipe the front of the bike down at the end of each day, so the little bastards are not baked on when I get home. Hopefully a quicker & easier wash down process when I get around to it at home.

Roads are very quiet and her legs have been stretched a few times  ;)

Sweaty , when home get some Bowdens fully slick. Those bugs will just fall off.

I do the same thing Sweaty, damp cloth & dry soft one to clean & dry the helmet visor. I give the front of the bike a wipe over at the end of the day to remove the majority of the bug splatters, check the chain then shower & beer o'clock.

Well, 1585 kms in 3 days of mainly really hot conditions and I have been giving it a bit. Think I will have a more leisurely 450km ride home in the morning, as the tyres are cooked.

Spot on Pete.
I made a change to the ride below to add on some more kms and finish with a fast open sweeper type run.
So I turned off just before Towong and took Swampy creek Rd to Cabramurra & then the link rd to the Snowy mountains hwy, for a quick blast past Talbingo, Tumut & in to Adelong. 525kms of nice roads  :onya:

I don't think it would Col because of the constant expressway speeds ... ridiculous maximum of 110kph.

Maybe a different story in peak hour traffic but I've never heard mine in those conditions.
