Title: Stator bolts
Post by: Endless on Sunday, 03 December 2017, 06:32 PM
What I thought was a battery fault initially turned out to be a stator problem.. Was hoping it was just the main nut, but nope. Will be putting some Loctite on these things when she gets a new one. As noted in pinned post, Suzuki have pricey AU$600 odd or $2-300 for other brands. Has anyone in Oz had success with the cheaper a one? If so who was selling? As you can see I don't really have the recoil option

Suggest if you are replacing the stator, also get the rectifier checked.

What exactly has gone there - is it just (!) a failed stator or has something rubbed on it - bit hard to make out from the photo.

If you do find a cheaper option, if they are like the UK, they can come without the plug....just check

I think he's destroyed one of the holes for the stator retaining bolts but drilling it out & cocking it up in the sort of way I often do too. That's the trouble with drilling hard steel bolts in soft ali, the drill drifts off line much to easy.

It might be possible to get a proper machine shop to get the rest of the bolt out, ali weld the hole up, redrill it & retap it to save the casing.

What's the problem with the bike anyway? when mine didn't charge due to a burnt out stator it was black n burnt when I took the cover off, that one looks ok so I'd be thinking reg/rec as Barmy said. Mind you i'd assume you've done the resistance/voltage checks on it before pulling the bike apart?

I can see what has happened there..One of the stator retaining bolts has come out and chewed the stator up..Nasty.
It's a common fault on Suzuki DRZ400 as well.
I always threadlock the stator retaining bolts in to prevent this happening.

Spot on Froudy, totally chewed the copper wire, if you look closely you can see the debris and the bolt sitting in the casing that's snapped in two. Think I'll shoot for a Wemoto on with no plug for $165. Was wondering about the rectifier, will look at testing this too while I'm in here.

Appreciate these are UK links Endless, not sure if they help - give options for aftermarket alternator

Cheers Barms, that was actually the pinned post I was referring to  Am shooting down to Sydney soon so will either pick up something or get delivered there. Can enjoy some of those roads I've been missing again.

I'm putting new covers on soon. The right side is here but this left side is on it's way. From the looks of this I'm going to be needing some loctite. Don't have it, never used it. What do I need to know? I think somewhere on the forum someone said "never red!" so is it the blue? Is blue blue or are there different strengths of blue? I don't want this happening to me and while I'm in there I may as well add the insurance.

243 is actually what i use. Slightly better than 242 where oil is involved. Its a so called Blue. Red is stronger but sometimes too strong, heat required to free.

Thanks both. 243 it is.

Don't take the bolt out unless you need too. Several members have found it never stays tight afterwards & needs replacing. The thinking is it's a slight stretch bolt and doesn't work after being done up once.

When you take the LH cover off, take note of which two bolts have dowty washers on (top & bottom near the middle I think) as if they don't go back in the same holes it'll leak.
Also you'll need to wiggle the starter gear back in place as it always comes out with the casing, to do so turn the crank backwards slightly with a screwdriver levering the gears so the starter pinion can locate.
Oh & watch your fingers, the magnets around the stator mean the cover slams back into place & will sodding hurt if your fingers are underneath.

Yep, thanks. I've been reading the articles posted on here about removing covers plus have downloaded all the manuals and my treeware manual arrived the other day. I'm just nervous enough not to rush. If the bolts are stretch bolts maybe I should order a fresh set of bolts?

Its only the big bolt that goes into the crank & holds the magnet for the stator that seems to need replacing. All the bolts to remove the cover & indeed the stator from the cover are fine to reuse. Mine have been off three or four times now without issue as I'm on my third stator.

Thanks for clearing that up.
