Peripheral vision is very important to bikers but how many black dots can you see at the same time by looking in one place?
3
1 - by looking directly at the centre. Slightest movement of the eyes though and that changes to 2-3

3 . . . . . . . .my head hurts now
using the picture on here i see 6 dots

How you guys see 3, I see 2 if I stare at the dead centre, as Dave said, move eyes a bit & there's 3, but 12 in total. Depends where you look.
It's an interesting thing to observe on a screen, but life scenes are not symetrical & monochromatic with 'hidden' black dots & as such, movement & different colours do draw your attention to that direction.
You'll all have seen how hard it is to hold your gaze directly in the centre & not look sideways or up & down, the same when you're riding, you never stare directly ahead of more then a second or 2, our eyes are constantly scanning our surroundings & sending messages back to the brain for processing. You've no doubt heard of tunnel vision, eyes stare straight ahead & peripheral is greatly diminished to non-existent, tired driver / rider & you shouldn't be on the road.
So, whilst this is an interesting thing to behold on a screen, IMO it has little bearing on actual riding awareness. It's more showing our brains ability (or inability) to process this sort of image.

After how many pints? Seth
double post so maybe I'm seeing double :frustrated:
on the pic in the thread
i look at the centre and see 2 at the top 2 in the middle and 2 at the bottom all at the edges nothing down the centre line.
maybe I'm doing it wrong
You got your glasses on? that'll be it! 4 eyes, so double vision & double 3 is 6, sorted then! Go have a pint mate!
Interesting subject......at the first rider training course i did our instructor harped on about being aware of and using your peripheral vision. He used as an example..... when he was deployed in Iraq a story about the guy that briefy showed himself around the corner of a building. He's likely to have a mobile phone and cause us trouble he said.
Make sure you see the dog that could run out.
i must be stuffed up , i see 12. wtf. reason i wont wear fullface is i cant see jack shit sideways. perfectly good 800 dollar shoei sitting in shed for that reason. never use it. maybe old skool but love my open face hats. no need to tell me how much inferior protection, i know all that. just what i like.
I have very good peripheral vision. I can see a shapely young lady at a good 80 degrees right and left without my eyes leaving the straight ahead position. It's saved me many a slap when the better half thought I was letching :P, but then rethought that when I wasn't looking directly at the aforementioned SYL.
Mirror sunglasses work too. :8:
Oh, I can see several spots btw..........
I prefer your peripheral vision test to the dots one Alan. Definitely more stimulating. For those with a risk aversion, you shouldn't be riding a bike for a start & secondly, do not attempt this test, it won't be worth it if you fail.
As a teenager and a passenger in a mates Morrie Minor......in Queen Street, Aucklands main street our peripheral vision alerted the lads to some svelt young things walking down the footpath on the other side of the road.
They in turn looked to check out what all the noise was about..... as the front of the Morrie penetrated the boot area and taillights of the car in front.
:embarrassed: :embarrassed:
We actually decent movement better in our peripheral vision than directly in front.
Ask military pilot, S&R crewman, etc
Its an evolution thing

Fortunately, some of us refuse to evolve, and just keep the 'lady radar/vision' working, whatever the angle.
Age is no problem.
