My brother in Blenheim & 2 of his mates, another brother (Trev) & I from Christchurch - 5 of us, are going to be doing a weekend run (2nd & 3rd Dec) to Karamea. The Blenheim guys will meet us at Murchison & we'll go from there down the Buller Gorge to Westport & up to Karamea. There are some very twisty roads in this lot, especially the road from Mokihinui to Little Wanganui.
We'll stay the night at the local pub & head home the next day, Trev & I will head home via the Coast Rd through Punakaiki, Greymouth, Kumara, Arthurs Pass, Porters Pass & out onto the plains of Canterbury. The road from Westport to Punakaiki is also much enjoyed by bikers for it's twisties.
Around 920 - 950k's for the weekend, or thereabouts. I've plotted the legs into the Zumo & all looks fine, but we could all end up in Invercargill if it goes pear shape! Not really, there's only a few main roads & ya can't get lost.
So, now I've gotta get my backside used to lengthy spells in the saddle - quickly. I'll be staying away from potholes this trip for sure. Mrs said don't breakdown again! it's too far to come & get you! Nice isn't it!
sounds like a ripper ride to me. also sounds like your wife and my wife have same attitude. darling, i have a broken leg, just be patient, youll get over it. gotta love em.
Love that Punakaiki area....... the boozer is for sale there I see. Stayed at the camp ground in those little old cabins a couple of times. Just a fab area. :onya:

Been discussing the street names developers use when creating new sub divisions. It was decided that its quite simple..... developers cut down a beautiful Kowhai tree from which native birds feed. Then call the new street.....Kowhai Grove !!
But yes Red l know what you mean. Many of the Maori names of various places will have a meaning.
Kaikoura means ....."place to eat crayfish." Kai meaning food and Koura meaning crayfish.
Maraetai means..... "meeting place by the sea."
Whanganui is trickier...... means "big bay or big harbour." But to bike riding honkys it means "Boxing Day Street Races or .....time to grovel for permission to leave the Whanau (family) to fend for themselves on Xmas Day so dad can travel to the Street Races."
That concludes your lesson in Te Reo (Maori language) for today......please put your Koha (gift) in the tin as you leave.
Aye bro (Kiwicol) :onya:
So how does Kaiapoi work then Col? Means the place where they ate their Poi's! Odd for sure.

According to the Maori language (Te Reo) encyclopedia (google) Kaiapoi literally means to swing the food.....plentiful.
So i guess they had a food fight there.
I may be wrong ??
Hey your ride sounds like a good one Col. Not many more sleeps to go :onya:
In Blackpool (Lancashire, UK) where I work we too have ancient dialect full of descriptive words for the locals..
Pleb : A member of the "lower orders"
Greb : Similar to a Pleb but usually overweight and greasy
Gobbin : (Lesser and Greater spotted).. Lesser spotted Gobbins tend to have just acquired the adult plumage and so their youthful spots have subsided. The lesser spotted tend to be less vocal during the mating season though this rule goes out of the window when it frequents the local watering holes.
Dork : Similar to a pleb but with a less comprehensive vocabulary.
Thrip : These are rare in the winter season as they tend not to be of the Blackpool area. One could say they are a pleb that has migrated for the summer season.
We are starting to get a mixture of the above as the various sub species are mating with each other..
Natural selection seems to going awry when one looks at the creations that emerge..
There are other words we have but I feel these may be irksome to the mods if I put them on here..
Lovely Speedy.
Sounds like a great ride coming up Col, have a top time & stay safe :onya:

But there's only 1 GSX, rest are Trumpets of one sort or another. Anyway, 'we' (the royal version) have an MCR every Saturday for the whole south island contingent & it's always a full attendance by every member, so, there's only one way to go from that.
BTW, total S.I. membership is 1. :cruisin:
From what I hear NZ is gorgeous..
Wish I was there !
Sounds a great ride Col....
It's all relative Speedy, if you see it every day it becomes the norm, but yes, it's fairly unpopulated & for the most part still unspoilt.
We got 4½ million approx. in the whole country, about 1.5 mil in the biggest city, Auckland - rat race compared to the rest of the country.
Rest of the place is pretty empty, especially the South Island. We (S.I) have lots of mountains though & only a few roads give access to the other side, great scenery though. Roads aren't too bad mostly, but bugger all motorways of any length, def not down south. Even the main "Highways" are single lane for most of their distance, occasionally branching out to 2 lanes per side, then back to 1. We're used to them, tourists on the other hand are not & are frequently involved in crashes, often fatal for them & the locals.

Thanks Kiwi,
I guess it's not too disimilar here, some of the names in central Nottingham go back Years, we have a 'Hounds Gate' where the Sheriff of Nottingham used to keep his hunting dogs,Wheeler Gate where all the carrigaes were made and 'Beast Market Hill' which was the old cattle Market. There is also a 'Gallows Gate' which is where they used to do the public hangings!
Only one punishment worse than that of course, was to be shipped to the Colonies :stir:
Red
Today 'Gallows Gate' is probably just across the way from the 'Serial Offenders Botanical Garden.'
In the interests of inter-hemispere relations i shall pretend not to have seen your last caustic comment Red !! :furious: lol

The buggers are coming voluntarily now and won't go back now that all the hard work is done :8:
Red, that was only ockers, our immigrants were worse, religious groups setting up camp throughout the new land!
Oh Lordy!
At least the roads should be quiet on a Sunday then :salute:

I always liked the interview Billy Connoley did with the (convict descendent) owner of Doyles Fish and Chip shop in Sydney with its million $ views.
He asked him if he ever wanted to go back to the UK and find his family that his convict ancestors came from.
The shop owner relied no, but if he could He'd find the family of the judge that sent them out here, shake their hands and buy them a beer.
Well, getting closer now. Had a few good runs on the bike, I'll do 1 more before Saturday morning. Bike is going good, cleaned & lubed the chain tonight, (jeez it sounds nice straight after a clean n lube), checked the brake pads - prob close to a change after the run. Tyres good, bash plate fixed, oil not due for a change for 2000k so fine there, Mrs sewed up the stitching on my bike bag - zip stitching had perished. Got a full tank & have some injector cleaner in this tank full - just because it hasn't had any for a few fills.
Bike is ready, I'm ready, bring on 7.30 Saturday morning!!
Good stuff Col, I can feel the excitment in your typing. It's great when you are really looking forward to a getaway
enjoy col. all fired up, i like it. bash plate?

Tongue in cheek reference to another run I did, where I ripped out the sump bolt. No bash plate really, just wariness of deep pot holes & remembering not to take it 'off road' again.
Good run through to Murchison, 20 odd degrees with a slight breeze. Waiting for others to arrive. Couple of pics for our English contingent.
Nice and cool in the shade then Col ?
Yeah mate, had to wait for an hour & a half for the others though.
Had a bloody fantastic ride from Westport to Karamea, for a big girl, man can she dance! Probably more than I can keep up with. Twisties, Hills & Hairpins, she took 'em all in her stride & was quite happy to be let loose on the straight flats.
Awesome day, awesome ride & awesome bike!! Some more pics later, phone is charging, beer o'clock I reckon. cheers all.
A couple more pics from yesterday
Looks like a nice couple of days out Col :onya:
Traffic looks a nightmare !! :boogie:
Well, today started out good, but things took a turn for the worse on the down hill section of the Denniston mine. Was sml shingle on road repairs, which I found on the way up, with a big loose n re-gather. So, I tell myself I'll be very careful on way down, n I was, but she still lowsided me on one of the corners. I hit the road quite hard n bike slid along n over the edge! I was doing maybe 20k (if that) n she still tucked me.
Bike went down about 12' over the edge into bush.
Managed to get her back to the road with a passing 4wd n rope n the guys holding her up.
She's not too good, but rideable. I rode her back to Westport n the shoulder is buggered. Reckon it's broken as there's sticky up bits now where there weren't any before. Hip is bruised too.
Westport hospital are too busy to see me, so got themes coming to collect me n the bike n take us home and me to the hospital.
First impressions of what's busted / damaged, screen, rad guard, brake pedal, tank, rear indicators, carbon can and link pipe, belly pan, rear molding by seat, handle bars stuffed. Just from what I can recall.
Here's some pics of it.
The poor girl. Hope it's not her last ride. She stops ok n discs aren't buckled. Forks seem ok too as does rear. Rides ok apart from the bent handle bars n bent brake lever.
Won't know till they go over her back in chch. Got ins, n I'll mend, but may take a while for a shoulder n hip.
Was going to ride her back home slowly, but then figured I need full control else I'll be in even more hurt with the bike and me! Hence I'm getting collected again.
What a bummer! Had a goodly concoction of pills now as pain and stiffness is increasing.
Will go see the hospital as soon as I get back to town.
Ouch. Hope everything is OK.
I'm very sorry to read this Col. Can only hope you're injured shoulder is not too bad.
Guess you were on the way down from the mine site. That road is pretty steep.
Hope you get the bike fixed fast..... and yourself even faster.
Usual story Col if I can be of assistance in anyway please just ask.
That's real bad luck Col, and so sorry to hear - but at least you are ok (relatively speaking) and your 14 can be fixed. Shame as was such a good road trip you were having.
Hope your shoulder is ok, first thing is to get you sorted.
devastated for you Col. just about to write up how good your weekend was going. such bad luck. hope you can fix shoulder. not your drinking arm i hope. truly devod. as far as bike, it doesnt hurt like you do. keep us posted.
Thats a bit of shit news on a Sunday morning Col, hope you get it sorted as quickly as possible and your injuries heal up good. Did the sump survive this time :whistling:
Thanks for the good wishes guys, being assessed now, just had x-ray n waiting to see doc.
I've only just seen this col glad your ok ish and so i the bike .
hopefully your shoulder isn't to bad and heals quick
and the bike is cosmetic and again easily sorted .
if there's anything we can do from this side of the world let us know.
Crickey that's a bastard.
Maybe delete "nice" from the title and insert "average".
Hope both you and bike mend well.
If it makes you feel any better Col, from looking at the pictures, a lot of that looks cosmetic
screen - can be reclaimed or replaced (depending in how deep the scratches are, if not too deep, then fairly straightforward to make good as new)
rad guard - get professionally re-polished or replace
brake pedal - might actually bend back. I've put gas pipe over the foot part before and gently bent, have never yet had to use heat, but poss you may have to
tank - fill and respray
rear indicators - replace
carbon can and link pipe - professionally re-polish? replace?
belly pan - would fix and spray - good as new then with a bit of fibre glass behind any cracks
rear molding by seat - poss respray
handle bars - replace
Still a bummer nevertheless, but given she went down a bank.......
Anyway get yourself sorted first, bike can wait.
Shoulder update, it's not broken, that's a good start. The doc said it's sprained & the sticky up bits were probably cartilage, but they couldn't scan for that at this time of night.
Gave me light duties for a week & said I should be fit to resume normal duties next Monday! Yeah right! I can hardly move the thing, butt we'll see. Said no lifting or straining it, but keep it moving. The bike repair might have to wait a while, I'll get hold of the insurance mob tomorrow & see what they say.
Best I get off to bed as I've got work in a few hours. Thx guys.
So fortunate that you didn't go over the edge with the bike. Great fellows who recovered the bike for you.
Wishing you a speedy recovery
Not good seeing things like this..But it happens. From the look of your pics, it could have been a hell of a lot worse!!
Glad you managed to get the bike recovered ok and you're not too badly battered Col.
Speedy recovery for you and the bike mate :onya:
Sorry to hear the news Col - take care :smile2:
Yes Andre, we spoke about that at the time, there was no-one directly behind me, they were further back up the hill, so no-one actually saw the bike go down & over the edge. Where it came to rest it's not visible from the road, only if you're standing right on the edge looking down.
They said they wouldn't have known where I went & just carried on into town. Things could have been a lot worse.
Wife and l have a whistle in our jacket pockets. Hopefully never to be used, but for just such a scenario.
Glad you are ok - the bike can be fixed!!
Good idea about carrying a whistle too :onya:
Shit Col, sorry to read the news just now. It could have been a lot worse, looking at the pics. Get well soon mate.
Get well soon :onya:
Just an update on how things are panning out, the Ins co have accepted the claim, just waiting for pic's & prices from the repairer, then they assign an assessor.
Update on me, shoulder is no better, been to my own doc, she thinks I've torn a muscle off the bone that holds down the collar bone (I think that's the one) and keeps the cartilage where it should be. Sounds logical to me given what I feel & see. So I'm going in for an ultrasound on shoulder on Friday at 9am. Got 2 weeks off all work, she cancelled the other cert, which said I was ok for light duties & ready to resume full duties next Monday.
She said if it is that, they may operate to stick the muscle back on where it should be, said recovery time is about 3 months!!!! Arm immobilised at your waist. Bugger! Boating, Fishing Quads & riding, all out over summer?? !!! What a pisser! If that's how it has to be, I can't do anything about it, as it's got to be fixed, can't do bugger all like it is.
Still get a beer or 2 down though.
If that is the case feel for you Col - when I had my neck done was off bike for 8 months in total before I was signed off as fit to ride again. And across the summer for me too. Still - polishing is very therapeutic and useful for exercise to get movement again......!
Not sounding good on the shoulder Col. Hope insurance comes to the party with the bike mate. Keep us updated & good luck with the recovery.
Your GP is a bit more onto it. You know somethings not right. Hoping for the best for you. Would be a shame to be out of action over summer.
HI Col,
Jeez just caught up with events, glad you are 'sort of' ok as has been pointed out, it could have been so much worse.
Wishing you and bike! all the best for a speedy recovery mate :onya:
Red
Col look at this way you are still here to let us know you survived a big bonus. Did your safety gear work well ? You can always repair or replace a bike. I wish you a speedy recovery bud. :hat: :hat:
Bugger!!!
Has ACC set in yet?? ;)
Update, Had scan on Friday, didn't tell me anything at the time, suppose they're not allowed to. It's getting better & I've got more movement & strength in the arm. Seeing Doc for the results tomorrow, but I'd be fairly sure now there won't be any need for surgery - (please not) it still pops & clunks when moving it & masses of bruising on leg & down bicep but nothing much on shoulder itself - which is puzzling. Oh well, answers tomorrow I hope.
Blgdave, ACC covers part of things, the 'top up' nowadays is bloody huge! Not 10 of 15 bucks, try 70+ and it's for each thing, x-ray, scan, dr visit. ACC is a bloody rort! We're supposed to be covered, that's what the scheme is for, it's not working though.
it's not working though.
And there in lies the problem.....You are working and you can pay !!
Was reminded of a story on the radio today. A few years back, fella breaks his leg while escaping from jail.......got ACC payout.....Go figure ??
Last update on the shoulder, went to get the results today, no muscle or ligaments pulled off the bone, hard to believe when I see that one sticking up out of my shoulder, but anyway.
There's a thing called a bursa in the middle somewhere & it's swollen and is the bit I can feel popping in & out of place between joint. I've got heaps better mobility after a week of resting it & just doing a bit as it allows, so they're hoping it'll fix itself with more taking it easy but still encouraging it to move normally without stressing the joint.
It'd be the best out come for me if another week or so will bring it almost normal again. They did say it could be 6 months or more before I had no discomfort there, which is why they've penciled me in for a possible steroid injection into the bursa. It may not come to that, hope so anyway.
It's still fairly tender and the muscles around that area are working differently to compensate for the awkward way I'm having to do things so now they're playing up & sore.
It'll all come right in the end.
The bike, well the dealer still has not submitted the repair price to the Ins co yet. They've had it over a week & are trying to get prices for parts - I had them in under an hour, so don't know where they've been looking. Suffice to say, no progress on the bike.
Errr I too wish you a "Speedy" recovery Col.
S.
They probably put a parts request out on Parts Trader Col.
All the dealers get a chance to put a price in to supply the parts, both new and secondhand.
That way the Insurance Company are assured of the best deal. Just takes a few days.
