Title: Wheel meet again . . . . .
Post by: Speedy1959 on Sunday, 05 November 2017, 04:31 PM
I say..
How the hell are you all?
I thought i would put some photos up of the transformation of my wheels.
I have decided to have the wheels powder coated in Red (Same as the Red on the tank).
Sophie (my bike) has been caressed by the ABBA stand since last Wednesday evening ! (It seems longer already)..
On Saturday I had the tyres and bearings all stripped out ready for the start of the powder coating process on Monday.
I hope to pick the wheels up on Wednesday afternoon.
I have booked the wheels in next Friday to have new tyres fitted, and new wheel bearings (including sprocket carrier bearing) fitted.
If all goes to plan the I should have the bike back in one piece by next Saturday lunch time.

Oh the photo showing the forks that have been removed is due to the fact that I had to fit fork protectors as my bike did not have any fitted !

On a slightly different note..
The motorcycle shop that is refitting the tyres etc has suggested that the powder coating may not be hard enough to re fit the tyres on Friday !!
(powder coatings applied Tuesday / Wednesday).
I thought the point of powder coating was that once it was baked on then thats it! Its hard!!
Have you any thoughts about the comments the bike shop made?

Thanks in advance..

bike shop is wrong. powder coat is as hard as it gets once baked. just had a read on it. what tyres mate?

Speedy......did you fit a bog roll holder to the bike or just the mat ??  :stir:

Grog is correct powdercoating is as hard as a whores heart - the bike shop is getting confused with spray paint that can take an age to cure properly

Red..
as soon as the wheels are back on the bike I shall put up photots on this post.
I saw a GSX1400 a few weeks ago the same colour as my bike and the Red wheels really suited it.

I phoned the powder coating place this afternoon and they confirmed I get the wheels back tomorrow at about 4pm..

I cant tell you how glad I will be to get Sophie off the ABBA stand and back into service.
Its been 1 week tomorrow but it sure feels a lot longer !

I have the wheels booked in to the bike shop on Friday morning to have the new tyres and wheel bearings fitted..
Saturday morning I will CAREFULLY refit the wheels and with any luck she will be back on the road this weekend..
Just watch it pour down !!!!!

Post by: Speedy1959 on Thursday, 09 November 2017, 03:41 PM
I have watched some excellent "How to's" on the web on replacing wheel bearings..
I am quite sure that I could have managed it.. I even have a 36mm deep impact socket thats a perfect fit into the bearing hole in the wheel for tapping the bearing home, but I just lack the confidence..
I think the part that worries me a bit is leaving that tiny clearance (from the spacer) when installing the 2nd bearing.. How do you know how much clearance is just right?
What happens if you tap in the bearing a bit too much and there is no clearance?
How would you withdraw the bearing a bit WITHOUT putting pressure on the inner race thus knackering the bearing?
You can see why I just hesitate to mess with it..
I am quite sure most of you guys would have done your own, but some of you have fantastic workshops / sheds.. I do not !

Anyway the bearings and tyres will be fitted this Friday morning.

I shall post another photo or two once the wheels are back on the bike..

I do like your enthusiasm..
Its 5.15am on Saturday morning and its still dark outside.
Remember I dont have a garage so I have to work outdoors on the patio in front of my Flat ..

I now have the tyres fitted and I asked them to fit the right angled tyre valves whilst they were at it.

At around 9am I will start the re assembly of Sophie and then will take some photos when she's back in one piece (promise)..
Then some short gentle test rides and back home to check all torque settings..
Thankfully Sunday is looking like a gorgeous day ! :)

Thanks everyone for your interest and encouragement.

You're a bit slow Speedy. Could you not have popped in some French Doors while your wheels were being powdercoated?
We are a bit spoilt here not having to plan working on the bike around the weather. Don't think there would be many homes here without a garage.
Wheels are looking good  :onya:

Im totally knackered...
Some "expert" fitted 1 front wheel bearing in the rear and 1 rear wheel bearing in the front !!!!!!!
To say I exploded on the phone is putting it mildly.
I fitted the front wheel first and so didnt notice anything amiss..
Wheel in.. Calipers mounted.. Mudguard on..

Half way through struggling with the rear wheel (Disc side was the correct one) I couldn't get the axle all the way through..
I removed the wheel and tried the axle and then I discovered the error..

At this stage I couldn't rant at the bike shop because it just might have been an incorrect bearing that had been supplied to me (I bought the bearings online)..
So off with the bloody front wheel to check what was in there..
Yep.. As I suspected 1 rear and 1 front !!!

I got in the car and charged round to the bike shop..
They initially said "you cant expect us to drop what we are doing on a Saturday morning"...
I know the boss of the place pretty well and have his personal mobile number..
I offered to phone him (he isn't there on a Saturday) and tell him of the attitude of one of his employees.
The guy then all of a sudden realised he might be able to correct it whilst I hung around...

Anyway I am going for a red hot bath and a beer !!

Hi Colin..
I am a REAL biker  :P
My bikes have never been hibernated over the winter..
OK I wont set out in the pouring rain, but if it rains whilst I am out I dont curse nor panic !
Incidentally I have NEVER hooked any of my bikes up to battery charging devices.
As you know my bikes live outside under a decent cover and yet NEVER have I been affected by none starting caused by a flat battery!
Last winter we had a long spell of exceptionally shite weather so my then Honda CB1300 hadnt event been started for 3 weeks..
Yet when I came to start her it was as though I had started her 5 minutes ago.

On a slightly separate note, with all my bikes if they have after market alarms I get them removed and set back to standard!
When I bought the Honda I said to the dealer "I will have the bike but will you remove that cr@p"?
He said "Yeah but your insurance will go up"!

I thought I would be totally straight with the insurance company and inform them that the bike no longer had a third part alarm..
Do you know how much the insurance premium ROCKETED up by ??
£12 !!

I shall just suffer that horrendous increase in the name of a healthy battery and trouble free starting!
I have 2 friends that work for both the RAC and AA (Breakdown recovery services).. Both of them said that the number 1 cause of their call out to bikes was battery problems mostly caused by add on alarm systems !
So thats why I choose not to have an alarm fitted... And I dont need a battery tender charging system !

Now come on Speedy you are confusing Colin with Col or is it Col with Colin.
I'll go over it one more time to make it clearer.
KC = Col= South Island.
KF= Colin= North lsland

Hi mate..
Its made by JDC and its the "Ultimate Rain" heavy duty version.
Far better than Oxford Stormex (I have had 2 of those)..
Much heavier weight and a thicker material.

I have the same cover.... by far and away the best one Ive had over the years.  Mines now been in use for 3years and still as good as when I bought it.  For winter storage I also use a bike dust cover underneath it.  saves any possibility of the Weatherproof cover rubbing on precious paintwork.
