Title: Wheel bearings
Post by: Speedy1959 on Saturday, 28 October 2017, 01:23 PM
Hi All,

I am seriously considering having my wheels powder coated in RED..
I saw a GSX last week in the same colours as mine (Black / Red) with Red wheels to match the Red on the tank and it really looked very good in deed.
My bike has now done around 26,000 miles and so i thought it would make sense to renew all wheel bearings and seals..

I have my eye on a full set of Koyo bearings including all seals.. See link below:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-GSX1400-K2-K5-02-05-KOYO-FRONT-REAR-WHEEL-BEARINGS-SEALS-COMPLETE/281411329690?hash=item41856c1e9a:g:XIgAAOSwQPlV9Ic3

Am I correct to assume these are of a decent quality?

To replace all the bearings/seals with parts from Fowlers would cost me £175 !!

Thanks in advance for your replies

S.

they will do the job just fine.
only thing i would add is replace the standard sprocket carrier bearing and seal at the same time as they are known to be a weak point as only sealed on one side of the bearing .

Hi Speedy

thats not a bad price - I have an account on Simpy Bearings and did a comparison and I got £60.00 for the bearings but no seals

Just had a look. Whole set of bearings, koyo, seals. Fr n rear. 55 euro plus post. No idea of euro to pound.175 just way too dear. I paid less than 100 oz dollars. And they stuffed up, sent 4 fr brgs, same cost.

You'll have to replace the bearings if you get the wheels powder coated, the heat bakes the grease in the bearings & they fail shortly afterwards if you don't.

Otherwise they last forever, mine are original at 113k (miles) just a new sprocket carrier bearing with every chain n sprockets.

Thats the exact reason I thought I would replace them..
If someone had said that Red wheels would suit the GSX I would have doubted it..
But the one I saw was the same colour as mine and it looked really good.. The wheels matched the tank and tailpiece colour brilliantly.
I just wish I had photographed it!
He said it was a Japanese Grey import.. It had yellow clocks !! (Back ground was yellow).

I seem to recall you should leave the old bearings in when they are coated, it's stops the mating faces getting coated so the new bearings still fit without hassle.

Never heard of yellow clocks, probably aftermarket tat like those horrid white ones.

old bearings out before coating then get the bearing faces and disc mountings masked off during powder coating .
then use old bearings to help fit the new ones.
if bearings left in any old grease comes out when the powder is heated and ruins the finish.

Thank you Seth..
The Powder coating company I have chosen said the same thing when I phoned them.
I have chosen the company below because of the amount of recommendations I have had about them.

With ref to powder coating wheels..
Please make sure they mask off the disc mounting faces before coating(and bearing areas and disc bolt threads)..It's most important that this is done. If it isn't you'll have to scrape the coating off before refitting discs to ensure that they run true.
I seem to remember a member on here a while back being caught out and it took him ages to remove the powdercoat from the affected disc areas.

Thanks very much Froudy..
I wonder if I could fit bolts into the threads leaving them screwed all the way in for the powder coating process ?
The powder coating company already told me on the phone they mask off the bearing orifices.

Thanks again for your input.

Thanks again Dave...
Do you happen to know what diameter the bolts are?
I am guessing M6 ?
Standard thread or fine ?

Thanks Dave..
I dont think I can stretch to Titanium after forking out for powder coating, wheel bearings and possibly a set of tyres.

I was thinking just 10 cheap bolts whilst the wheels are being powder coated...
I can get a dozen cheap and chearful ones now I have the thread size.

Simon - wasn't suggesting you buy them - ye God's at that price neither would I, the link was purely to give you relevant information for getting 10 cheapy Bolts from eBay or your local hardware store to use whilst your wheels were being powder coated.

Sorry if I caused confusion  :embarassed:

Why buy any bolts? You'll be taking the discs off anyway, so just stick the normal bolts back in the holes.

Hi Hooli

I didnt want the bikes own stainless bolts powder coating.
As Dave says I just want cheepo ones to protect the threads.

But the disc mounting faces will be masked off anyway, so just put the bolts in before masking them.

as hooli says any mating faces will need to be masked off before and cleaned of any exess powdercoat after that gets under the masking before refitting of bearings and disc's making sure the surfaces are spotless or it will effect the running of the disc's.
