Title: Tyre wear
Post by: Mick_J on Monday, 23 October 2017, 07:49 PM
Does anyone know what causes this type of wear on a front tyre?  Looks a bit like a flat topped pyramid.

the camber of the road and long distances on motorways

Lots of riding on straight roads maybe
Too high a tyre pressure
Tyre just not suitable for the bike perhaps. Sometimes even though the sizes, weight and speed ratings are all correct the tyre might still not suit the bike. The sidewalls may be too stiff or not stiff enough to suit the weight and suspension characteristics. As an example I got caught out using Avons on my Pan European which it destroyed with weird wear patterns. Although recommended by the Honda dealer Avon have no tyre at all that they recommend for the Pan.

Definitely looks like a lot of motorway miles - bought a few bike that have had rear tyres that look like this never a front though

Virtually no motorway miles, it's not the centre i am bothered about its the sides which are flat.  More like this but the same both sides and the top is not perfectly flat (it's my picture thats crap)

How old is the tyre, how many kms has it done and what pressure do you run ?
Sure looks odd. Can't be nice to ride.
Think i'd be replacing it no matter whats caused it.

Tyre is about 4 years old, has around 3000miles on it and is run at 36psi.
My pic is slytly exagerated to show the wear pattern so it still okay to ride on but I need to find the cause before it becomes a problem and it will happen to a new one.
I think it has to be a suspension problem, just dont know what.  Any pointers would help.

I'd still say its down to the camber of the road .
a very strange wear pattern tho .

I have the same issue with every front tyre i have ever had on every bike. Its not the bike its you, and its not a problem, its normal.... (so im told) For me though, its only on one side not both. I have more 'confidence on right bends than left. and maybe my own personal weight distribution is slightly off as i am a big bloke.
That said, i have 2 sets of tyres a year now and my rocket has done 4500 miles since June.
After 4 years and 3000 miles i really don't think you have ANYTHING to be worried about!

Of coarse, i could be totally wrong and your bike is f***ed...... :whatever: :whistling:

Proteous, my mate weighs 75kg, loghtweight, he gets 3000ks out of front tyre on rocket, nearly 9 from rear. hes tried all brands available, thats not many. my angel on mine did nearly 20, rhs wore away. best ive ever had by nearly double.

I used to get something similar on the front, some years ago, I put it down to riding round this set of roundabouts and slip roads:

Every day on the way to work, and home in a brisk manner (would have been rude not to!).
Used to wear out the sides of the front at a similar rate to the middle of the rear.
Don't go that way any more, and don't wear the fronts so quickly.

I do a mostly motorway riding and my front tyre ends up a bit like that..Not quite as extreme though.
I get around 10,000 miles from a front Metzeler Roadtech Z6.

fella - itll be the tyre - I chased an issue I had with a fork that kept leaking and vibrating over 70 - I did everything from seals bearing (headstock and wheel) - stripped and rebuilt calipers - new pads - cleaned and checked discs and bobbins

In the end it was the tyre that had caused it - a new tyre and all good again no more issues

Im not preaching mate and I wished I had done the tyre to begin with would have saved me a mint
