As a few of you may know I bought a bandit 1200 a few months ago - it was minging with a gold engine - well I might have kind off got over enthusiastic over the strip down and as a result its turned into a rebuild - so with out further ado
Frame - stripped and media blasted - etch primed - base coat of piano black - the clear coat was 2K with black candy in it

Yeah mate all set up to proper spray - use a UPOL 600ml HVLP gun -- sed to do it as a sideline but canned in to focus on my own bikes
That's coming along nicely Del :onya:
Nice, got one of these waiting for me in the Emerald Isle in 2018 with touring gear. How good are they will be doing Uk and Europe.

I had the last of the air cooled ones (06) GSF S and did 80K all over the USA - great bike!
Right Ho and off we go with an attempt to get my 1200 Bandit and the ZRX1100 both out of boxes and on the road where they belong
as the wife has banned bike parts the dining room I thought Id chuck the lump in it and ended up doing a little more
Engine In and all secured
Swing arm
Shock & Linkage
Headstock bearings
alternator & starter fitted
All parts were stripped cleaned and repainted where necessary
Oh I do enjoy a good bike build/rebuild thread!
Just one point Del..
Are you using the original air box? If you are, you might have a bit of a struggle to get it in with the engine already in place. It is possible, but it's a right barsteward
Yeah looking good Del!
What are you doing with the engine cases colour?
@Red Biker Quote from: Red Biker on Friday, 05 January 2018, 06:26 AM
Yeah looking good Del!
What are you doing with the engine cases colour?
I've a set of casings ready to go on at the weekend all a gunmetal grey metallic - but as Froudy says Ill need to remover the engine to fit the airbox and I need to fix a mount
Pictures to follow
After a chat with Froudy I decided to remove the engine to fit the airbox and correct the previous owners idiocy but managed to get it all removed and refitted in just over an hour - also got the casings fitted - forks and a few other parts
Great stuff Del :onya:
At least now, you know it's done right and it wont be niggling away at you.
looking good so far buddy top work .

 :rofl2:  :rofl2:
getting there and wont be too long - about to tackle the electric string - I hate wiring
I'll send my Son OJ up to sort the loom for you...He loves doing them for some perverse reason that I haven't quite worked out yet :rofl2:
He's good at them too :onya:
So in an attempt to put off the wiring I decided that I didn't like the standard black infills so decided to wrap in real carbon fibre - so after several coats of clear and a serious amount of sanding and polishing there ready for the bike
Oh and I managed to pick up an uncut undertray for a £10.00 :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
Uncut undertray for a tenner??? BARGAIN!!!!
Those infills have come up a treat Del :clapping:
looking good, do love my bandits, still go my 600 & 1200, so much fun & you can do so much with them
Woo Hoo - Its on wheels and rolling :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
managed to get a fair bit done in the past few days - the wirings done (needs some fettling and routing) and the carbs back on (they were an utter utter bitch to do) - wheels on only missing on spacer (which is on order)

Latest update - It Lives
I got it started for teh 1st time today (genuinely this is the 1st start) - there was an attempt the other day but had what I think was a stuck float valve in number 4 carb so back out stripped cleaned (who ever was last in there needs a boot in the baws as they don't know how to use a screwdriver most of the screws were all rounded - all new allen head bolts in now) back in and this time no leaks
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G399AOnjDxc&feature=youtu.be
also when in the carbs took out the needles and look aftermarket - does anyone know what it is (Carbs are a dark art to me)
Is it a "tickler"?
In days of yore one would tickle a carb to prime it with fuel..
I only ever saw the bit with the spring on so I could well be totally wrong.
Looks like a needle. Is that a screw thread at the top to adjust it?
Look'n nearly as good as mine was Del!!!
Good job!
:cheers:Stan
It's a carb needle, the groves on top are to set the height. Usually have only one ring on top not two though.
Yep it's a carb needle. You can usually set the height by moving the circlip that locates the nylon ring. That's what the grooves are for, they are for the circlip.
If you move the circlip lower down the needle, the needle sits higher in the jet and this makes the mixture richer (because the needle tapers towards the bottom). Conversely move the circlip the other way to make the mixture leaner.
Needles affect the mixture in about the middle of the throttle opening range. At lower throttle settings the pilot jets dominate, whereas at full bore it's all about the main jets.
This bike looks pretty standard so I would start with it at the factory setting and leave it there unless there's a problem.
So nearly finished the bandit build been a fun build if not a little bit frustrating at times - need to get indicators fitted (on route from the far east) - spanner the bike and off for MOT
Here it is sitting beside its stable mate
Looking great Del :clapping: :clapping:
VERY nice!
But what is that with the air box? Kick marks? :happy1:
Good job done there Del..Looks great :onya:
Only just seen the video and the photo of the carb needle...Looks like a standard one to me rather than Dynojet etc :onya:
Great job Del, a credit you mate!
What a lovely family you have there Del, very smart, you should be proud of the both of them :clapping:
Very nice Del, lovely stable :onya: :clapping:
Very nice... :onya:
If the front end of the Bandit is a little saggy, give me a PM, I have a set of Race Tech springs which I ordered for the 14 by mistake. They are rated for my weight (100KG).
Looking great del both bikes are a credit to you .
Brilliant job mate. Look nice sitting together. So well matched up. Top marks to you. Which do you prefer to ride?
